GENDER ASPECTS OF SOCIAL WORK 2.1 Gender equality as an agenda of EU and a challenge for education in Social Work Main reasons: - Gender - organizing principle (also) in Social Work - Gender equality strategic goal and an important pillar of EU policy - gender mainstreaming - Knowledge about gender and history of gender inequality - a way to understanding the social conditionality of differences in social status of men and women and in their social problems 9
10 1.2 Gender dimensions of social problems and gender stereotypes Need of new thinking exempt from gender stereotypes and stereotypical bipolar perception of masculinity and femininity (Femina and masculine) Gender stereotypes in the mind of professionals in Social Work - a barrier in the professional role / efforts to promote emancipation of clients of Social Work Absence of knowledge about the history and causes of gender inequalities, about the history of the movement and the efforts of women and men for human rights of women Myths about feminism - for example "Feminism" as the third evil (after fascism and communism) 10
11 Traditional social work - gender-blind approaches, loaded by gender stereotypes Gender-sensitive social work - take into account gender differences in the needs of women and men, solves acute problems caused by gender stereotypes, both women and men. 11

EXAMPLE: The issue of men and women with other than a heterosexual orientation The need of progress - education of the wide, professional community and students of Social Work in the field of the queer studies - the bio-physiological determination of homosexuality, transsexuality, bisexuality and other forms of deviations in sexual needs and behavior of individuals - about homophobia and its consequences - principles of gender-sensitive work with clients with other than heterosexual orientation Resource of understanding, of information and of knowledge - movies and novels about the lives of lesbians and gay men 14

EXAMPLE: Female gender mutilation (female genital mutilation) The actual problem of multiculturalism and European emigrants from Africa The need of progress, knowledgement and understanding of: - issue of violence against girls in more than 28 countries (mainly in Africa) - knowing the cultural traditions and practices with devastating consequences: 2 million victims of forced genital mutilation each year - girls (6000 girls a day) are in danger of life according toun estimate: 130 million women suffer by serious and by life-threatening injuries, they face the consequences the whole life - social problems 15
