1 Nursery Spring Term Learning Walk Our new topic in January was called Houses, Homes and Castles. As always the children worked in their key worker groups to plan some activities. They also chose and planned our role play area: a building site. Unfortunately the children did not follow all the rule and regulations that surround building sites and Ribble Valley stepped in and sent us a letter to say they had taken all our bricks away! The children had to work really hard in order to show Ribble Valley they could play nicely and fairly in the building site. They also wrote a letter to them asking for our bricks back. Several weeks later I am pleased to say that Ribble Valley did finally see how hard the children had been working and returned our bricks. They also sent us four remote control cars and challenged us to make them go forward, backward, left and right. We had great fun!

2 We went on treasure hunt around the village looking for different features on the houses. We learnt that windows can be all different shapes, including rectangular, square, circular and even diamond shape. We looked at the numbers and names on houses, the size of the gates, the number of windows and the number of chimneys among other things. We were really lucky when one of the parents at our school agreed to visit us in nursery and read us the book she wrote called Grow Your Own. Before sge arrived we thought of questions we could ask our visiting author. In Expressive Arts and Design the children made houses using boxes. They decided on how to decorate their house, the number of windows and the colours. We did lots of work about the story of Tge Tgree Lhttle Phfs. We used puppets to retell the story to each other and even made the three little pigs new houses in our school garden. We celebrated story telling week by reading lots of stories set in castles. We created two castles in the classroom where we read our stories, acted stories out and retold them to our friends.

3 We were very lucky to have a visit from group called History Alive. We all dressed up as Victorians for the morning and learnt about how mothers used to do the washing a long time ago. Jane brought us loads of interesting objects for us to explore. We began the second half of term by celebrating Chinese New Year with the children in Reception class. Here you can see lots of Chinese related activities such as sorting pom-poms using Chinese spoons, threading beads to make a dragon s body, putting the correct number of gold coins into the money envelopes and ordering the numbers on the washing line. The children also created lots of crafts.

4 Our main topic for the second half of term was Pirates. In their Key Worker groups the children talked about what they already knew about pirates and some suggested activities we could take part in. Not surprisingly the children planned to make a pirate ship role play area which has been played in enormously. We received a letter from Pirate Pete asking if we could help his crew find the way to Treasure Island. He left us map and we programmed the beebot to move round the treasure map until we got to Treasure Island. Taking the helm! We enjoyed reading lots of books about pirates in Pirate Cove! Ordering the ropes by length and drawing a pirate friend. The term ended with decorating eggs for Easter and rolling them down the grass. Walking the plank!

5 In RE this term we have learnt about the stories that Jesus heard when he was a child and the stories he told as he got older. We looked at some paintings depicting Jesus with his parents and friends in the temple, listening to stories and compared them to photographs showing children today listening to stories. We thought about what stories Jesus would and would not have heard. We read the story of Noag s Ark and made promises to God just as he made a promise to us when he sent the rainbow. A shepherd visited us; he was looking for his lost sheep. Luckily one of children found his sheep and the shepherd sat down and told us the story from the Bible of The Lost Sheep. The story made us think about how Jesus looks out for each one of us.
