1 December 4, 2014 TO: FROM: RE: School Board Chairmen Division Superintendents Clerks PR Contacts Gina Patterson, Executive Director Student Art for Regional Forums Your school division is invited to participate in the VSBA Student Art Contest held in conjunction with the annual VSBA Spring Regional Forums. PLEASE PASS THIS INFORMATION ALONG TO YOUR DIVISION S ART COORDINATOR AND/OR DIRECTOR. Encloses are: 1. Contest guidelines. 2. Contest permission slip (duplicate as needed.) 3. A list of the 2014 Regional Art Winners. We recommend that the art be picked up at the Spring Regional Forum by a member of the school board or staff from that student s school division. Student winners can then be honored at a local school board meeting with the parents and art teachers involved. It provides an opportunity to showcase the good news in your division. 4. Spring Regional Forum Schedule. Please make sure that artwork is at the Forum prior to the judging (judging takes place during the social hour; consult your particular forum schedule for time) and that someone is responsible for taking back the art that is not selected. Artwork selected will be framed and displayed on a rotation basis in the offices of the Secretary of Education/State Superintendent and the Virginia School Boards Association through the year. It will be returned at the 2016 Spring Regional Forum. We look forward to seeing your school division represented in the Student Art Contest. Information on the locations of the VSBA Spring Regional Forums will be sent later. If you have any questions, please call Gina Patterson at Thank you for your participation.
2 2015 VSBA Student Art Contest Guidelines Each school division is requested to submit three pieces of student art (one per category). Following are the guidelines for submission of the art to the 2015 Student Art Contest, which is held in conjunction with the Spring Regional Forums: 1. Acceptable entries must be art or photography that was created by a student during participation in a school art program. Sorry, no sculptures or 3-D objects. 2. All work must be in a displayable form (matted or mounted) and covered with material (plexiglass, shrink wrap, etc.) suitable to ensure it is not damaged during handling. Please do not laminate your art work. 3. Art must be no larger than 18" x 24" in size, excluding matting. 4. Each piece of work must include the student's name, age, school name, school division, and category (elementary, middle or secondary as defined by the local school division). 5. All art pieces are to be delivered to and returned from the regional meeting at the start of the social hour by a designee of the school division (usually the superintendent or attending board members). 6. Each regional vice-chairman will be responsible for seeing that a display area is available for the art. 7. Judging is to be done by a 3- to 5-member jury and may be the regional officers, other school board members of the region, art teachers, or others as selected by the regional chairman. 8. Judging should be completed during the social hour and three winners selected (one from each category.) Judging decisions should not be completed until the registration/reception period ends. Ribbons will be provided by VSBA. 9. The winners will be announced during the business meeting. Winning selections will be framed by the VSBA for display in the offices of the State Superintendent of Public Instruction and the Virginia School Boards Association on a rotating basis. They will be returned to the school division at the 2016 Spring Regional Forum. It is recommended that the art contest winners be honored at a special ceremony held in conjunction with a school board meeting. Parents and teachers should attend and be included. This is an excellent public relations item for the board and the superintendent. All winning pieces will be affixed with an engraved plate with the following sample information: 2015 VSBA Southern Region Elementary Winner Student Jones Schoolsville Primary School Schoolsville County Schools If you have questions, please contact Gina Patterson at gina@vsba.org or

I understand that, at the end of the year, the artwork will be returned.
