We want to decorate the theatre using Tinderbox themed things made by local schools. You could even use the following ideas and templates to create your own displays and decorations at school.

1 Christmas activity sheet Hello! Here at Norwich Puppet Theatre we are very busy preparing for our Christmas show The Tinderbox. We want to get the theatre looking lovely for Christmas and we need your help. Could your pupils help us make some Christmas decorations? We want to decorate the theatre using Tinderbox themed things made by local schools. You could even use the following ideas and templates to create your own displays and decorations at school. If you've not yet booked to see the show, then visit our website to book your school visit now! Materials list Our colour scheme for the decorations is: White, Gold, Silver, Copper and Green. You will need: Norwich Puppet Theatre template images (included at the back of this guide) Sugar paper and tissue paper in the above colours or thin card White A4 and A5 paper Scissors Pens/pencils Crayons Paint Glue Other decorating materials such as shiny paper, sequins and glitter All hands on deck!

2 2D hanging decorations We would like birds, candles, dogs, soldiers, coins and cars to use as hanging decorations in Norwich Puppet Theatre this Christmas! These are all things that connect to our Tinderbox show. Print out the template images (included in this pack) to create some templates for your pupils to use. Remember our colour scheme is Green, White, Copper, Gold and Silver. Encourage pupils to cut out, colour in and decorate with pens, crayons, paint, collage, sequins, glitter or whatever you think will look nice. Please try to stick within our colour scheme if possible...but we won t object to the odd pink or blue sequin here and there! When dry, punch a small hole in the top of each decoration (we are planning to hang them all from the ceiling at Norwich Puppet Theatre) then pack the decorations up and post to us so we can put them up ready for your visit! Remember to save some for your own display too! Alternatively, you can make your own drawings to turn into decorations! Read the snippets of the story included on the template sheets and see what Tinderbox themed decorations they inspire you to make!

You may have noticed that 2 of the bird templates have slots marked on them, cut a slot where indicated. Now for the tricky bit!

3 3D hanging decoration idea For this idea, you follow the same steps given for 2D decorations but use the bird template sheet. Additionally, provide some white, green, silver, copper or gold pieces of tissue (or very thin paper) to be decorated too. You may have noticed that 2 of the bird templates have slots marked on them, cut a slot where indicated. Now for the tricky bit! Into the slot, you are going to insert a fan-folded strip of the decorated tissue. Below is a rough guide of what size pieces of tissue to use and some step by step images to help you! For the birds- cut a 1 0cm wide by 1 5cm long sized piece of tissue for the fan wings. Concertina fold the tissue at 1 cm intervals all along the length of the tissue. Push the concertina folded paper strip through the slit on the bird's body, stopping half way. Fan out the folds to form the wings (and glue in place to complete). You can cut some little shapes into the folded fan piece if you want tothis creates a paper snowflake effect on the tissue fan! If you are posting some 3D decorations to Norwich Puppet Theatre- please just put the folded paper in the slots without gluing and press the decorations flat in order to post them safely. Snowflakes We would love you to make us some snowflakes to hang from our ceiling and to put on our windows. Use white tissue squares or thin paper for the children to decorate with glitter, sequins and shiny paper. Then fold the paper into quarters and cut the edge to create a circle or a snowflake outline. Keep cutting little shapes from the edges of the folded paper and then unfold to reveal a beautiful snowflake!

4 Templates: SOLDIER A SOLDIER came marching along the high road: Left, right left, right. He had his knapsack on his back, and a sword at his side he had been to the wars, and was now returning home. As he walked on, he met a very frightful looking old witch in the road. Her under lip hung quite down on her breast, and she stopped and said, Good evening, soldier you have a very fine sword, and a large knapsack, and you are a real soldier so you shall have as much money as ever you like.

5 Templates: DOGS...you will see a large chest, standing in the middle of the floor, and upon it a DOG seated, with a pair of EYES AS LARGE AS TEACUPS. But you need not be at all afraid of him......here you will find another DOG, with EYES AS BIG AS MILL WHEELS but do not let that trouble you... The DOG who sits on this chest is very dreadful his EYES ARE AS BIG AS A TOWER, but do not mind him. If he also is placed upon my apron, he cannot hurt you...

6 Templates: COINS...You can then open the chest, and take from it as many pence as you please, they are only COPPER PENCE but if you would rather have SILVER MONEY, you must go into the second chamber...

7 ...If, however, you like GOLD best, enter the third chamber, where there is another chest full of it.

8 Templates: CARS...he tied up all his money in her apron. and slung it on his back like a bundle, put the tinderbox in his pocket, and walked off to the nearest town. It was a very nice town, and he put up at the best inn......and the people visited him, and told him all the wonders that were to be seen in the town......he passed a very pleasant time went to the theatre, drove in the king s garden, and gave a great deal of money to the poor.

9 Templates: CANDLES One dark evening, he had not even a penny to buy a CANDLE then all at once he remembered that there was a piece of candle stuck in the tinder box, which he had brought from the old tree, into which the witch had helped him. He found the tinder box, but no sooner had he struck a few sparks from the flint and steel, than the door flew open...

10 Templates: BIRDS Remember to cut slot out on the last two bird templates and insert tissue fan wings!
