2 Aims of the Workshop To know and understand a little more about statutory and summative assessments in school To know and understand a little more about on- going assessments in school To understand a little more about formative assessment, AfL(assessment for learning) and some of the techniques used in school To look at some of the assessment materials and have a go yourself

3 Why is Assessment so Vital? Assessment enables the teachers to know - What your child can do and what they need to learn next ( Target Setting). - What the teacher needs to do to help your child achieve their targets ( Planning, Provision and Interventions). When your child has reached their targets ( Tracking).

6 Children learn best when: they know what they are going to learn they know how they are going to learn they know how the learning will be assessed they know how to meet the criteria for assessment

7 Assessment for learning Any practice which provides information to pupils about what to do to improve upon their previous best.

10 The English National Curriculum National Expectations Level 1 Level 2c Level 2b is the National Expectation at the end of KS1( Year 2) Level 2a Level 3 In KS2 ( Years 3-6) the National Expectation is that a child will reach Level 4b by the end of this Key Stage.

13 What are SATs? Standard Attainment Tasks /Tests Children are assessed in; -Reading -Writing -Mathematics In Key Stage One the emphasis is on teacher assessment and the tests support this judgement.

15 Teacher Assessment If children do not perform to the best of their ability in these tasks and tests, teacher assessment can be used. Children will not know that they are taking SATs as they are done as subtly as possible.

16 Levels W = Working towards level 1 Each level has subdivisions. c just entering the level, not yet secure b secure in the level a secure and moving towards next level National Average for end of Year 2 = 2B Level 1 and 3 subdivisions not shown on SATs results.

17 What can you do to help? Read to your child. Read with your child. Encourage your child to read to you. Try to do at least one of these every day and ask questions about the story. Incorporate number problems that occur in every day life, at the shops, on the bus, telling the time etc Continue to work on targets discussed with the class teacher at parents evening.

18 End of Key Stage Two - Year 6 Levels Each National Curriculum level is divided into sub-levels: C means that a child is working at the lower end of the level B means that they are working comfortably at that level A means that they are working at the top end of the level A Guide What level should my child achieve by the end of each school year: Year 1 Level 1a/2c Year 2 Level 2b/2a Year 3 Level 3c/3b Year 4 Level 3b/3a Year 5 Level 3a/4c Year 6 Level 4b/4a

19 End of Key Stage Two By the end of year 6, approximately 75 per cent of children will achieve a level 4; the top 10 per cent will achieve a level 5, and the exceptional top one per cent, a level 6. Children who achieve a level 4 are expected to go on to pass five or more GCSEs at grade A*- C. SATs help to give an indication of your child s ability to the Secondary School or Key Stage 3. However, SATs tests are not used solely to give the child a level. They are used in conjunction with teacher assessments, which are more accurate since they use a broad selection of work and knowledge from the teacher about the child.

20 Statutory Assessment Tests (SATs) Week commencing 31 st May Testing skills in: English and Maths Reading, Writing, Spelling, Grammar and Punctuation, Mental Arithmetic.

21 How will the results be reported? Since 2006, International Schools are required to mark all Year 6 SATs papers themselves following a comprehensive marking scheme. All papers will be marked and cross marked by staff members and moderated by the Leadership Team. A selection of International and UK papers are submitted for external moderation. Your child s End of year report will contain the Teacher Assessment. Year six SATs results are generally ed to parents.

22 Test Reading 1 Hour Writing Short Task: 20 minutes Long Task: 45 minutes Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar (SPAG) 1 hour Maths How children are assessed Children are given 1 hour to readdifferent texts and answer questions linked to it. The text and questions get progressively harder Children are set a long and short writing task. Their writing is levelled by the class teachers and moderated. Children must answer questions linked to punctuation and grammar. They must then spell 20 ageappropriate words. Paper A and Paper B both non-calculatortests. Paper A: 45 minutes Paper B: 45 minutes Children are tested on all areas covered in KS2 Maths. Questions range from a Level 3 to 5. Mental Arithmatic

23 What can you do to support and prepare your child? Revision help your child to revise & practise skills. Daily reading and discussion about their books. Learn & practise times tables. Ensure your child completes specific Home Learning tasks.
