3 1. About is hardware clone of AVRISPmkII hardware. This gets detected as AVRISPmkII but may not be configurable from AVR Studio. Thus the programmer can be used either with GUI made by us (EmbeddedMarket.com) or can be used with AVRDude commands on command line. This programmer works with all operating systems for which latest AVRDude is available. Latest AVRDude is always available with WinAVR distribution. Use WinAVR version or above. Block representation of the setup required for : Computer with any operating system that has latest AVRDude installed. USB ISP Cable AVR Board Powered externally and has 10 Pin ISP Connector onboard. 4 2. Usage 10 Pin ISP Connector 10 Pin ISP Cable USB A Connector Red LED: Indicates programmer is not ready or not detected by the computer. This LED indicates Drivers are installed and Programmer is detected. This LED blinks during programming. 4

5 ISP Connector: The programmer works with any AVR Board which has 10 Pin ISP Connector as shown below: Pin Layout of ISP Connector mounted on the board (Top View of any AVR Board) We do not recommend zero boards (also known as general purpose boards). Always use neatly designed and assembled AVR board to avoid loss of time. Connecting with Computer: 10 Pin ISP Flat cable (Included in product packing) 10 Pin ISP Connector on the AVR Board. Connect Programmer directly to Computer s USB Port or you may use USB extension cable for USB A to USB A. This cable is not included in the product pack. Programmer is powered from USB. AVR Project Board: (Not part of the product) (You may use any board of your choice) Separate Power Input to AVR Board is required. 5

6 Installation (Windows): New users Note - Do not connect the Programmer to PC unless until instructed in this user manual! Part 1: Install latest WINAVR The hardware depends on AVRDude. AVRDUDE is an utility to download/upload/manipulate the ROM and EEPROM contents of AVR microcontrollers using the in-system programming technique (ISP) The AVRDude is always included in latest WinaAVR setup. Thus you should install WinAVR version or above from this URL: After installation, you may find AVRDude at C:\WinAVR \bin (Assuming you have installed WinAVR on C: drive) Note this path as you will need it during further configurations. 7 Part 2 (A) : Driver Installation (Windows XP) Download Drivers from this Product s webpage at EmbeddedMarket.com Unzip the downloaded file and note down the path. 10 Part 2 (B) : Driver Installation (Windows 7 With Admin access) Download Drivers from this Product s webpage at EmbeddedMarket.com Unzip the downloaded file and note down the path. Connect the to PC and follow steps as described on further screens for Driver Installation on Windows 7: 1. Windows 7 will try searching for driver but will fail to install: 2. In device manager locate the Failed Driver installation for AVRISP mkii 10

11 3. Right click on the AVRISP mkii in device manager and click Update Driver 4. Select Update driver Location as Browse my computer for driver software 11

14 Part 3 Using There are two way to use this programmer 1. Command line (works with Windows & Linux) Use AVRDude commands on command line On command line, type AVRDude to understand all command options. This option requires advance system usage skills. 2. Using FreeISP-mkII-Clone Software Download and install FreeISP-mkII-Clone software from the product s web page. Run the installed software and set some initial configuration as shown in the snapshot below: Specify path of AVRDude.exe from WinAVR folder as noted in Part 1 step above. 2. Select Flash hex file (Hex file is generated from your AVR Project). 3. Select EEPROM hex file (this is optional and depends on your AVR project). 4. Select device. If device is not listed then you can type the valid device name. 14

15 5. Specify Fuse bit values (This is optional and only to be used by person with good AVR knowledge, else you may damage your AVR controller). 6. Select Program option, by default Prog Flash is selected which will download the selected hex to the selected device. 7. The Program button, hit this whenever you want to download the program to AVR. 8. Consol Window, here you can see the programming progress and errors if any. FreeISP-mkII-Clone Software is not designed to read program from the AVR microcontroller. It can write (download) program flash, eeprom flash, fuse & lock bits to AVR Microcontroller. FreeISP-mkII-Clone Software may not work with original mkii or any other clone. 15
