2 ARE YOU A COACH OR A LEADER? A TRAINER OR A MANAGER? Test your skill at training "A manager is a title, it does not guarantee success. Coaching is an action, not a title and actions will result in successes!" Catherine Pulsifer

3 WHAT A DIFFERENCE TRAINING MAKES

4 The Coach Knows the goal and keeps the team s focus on it The Manager Knows what you want to accomplish What is your goal? What does success look like? When your expectations are not real high - and that's a sad way to be - losing becomes a habit for a lot of players and coaches. Steve Spurrier

5 The Coach Recruits great team members who fill each task and who compliment other team members and gets to know each one. What if you don t have a say in the hiring process? How do you empower your team? Do you delegate for action or for results? The Manager Hires good candidates with experience and the knowledge needed then trains in specifics Don't ever ask a player to do something he doesn't have the ability to do. He'll just question your ability as a coach, not his as an athlete. Lou Holtz

6 The Coach Makes sure everyone knows the play book and rules of the game. The Manager Goes over policies, procedures, production records with everyone. Why is it important for all the team to know everything? From a coaching standpoint, the greatest fear I've ever had - and it doesn't take a Final Four to bring it out - is that in some way I might not have prepared my team as well as I could have. 7 The Coach Knows the opponent s strengths, weaknesses, stats, etc. The Manager Knows the customer s likes, dislikes, cultural preferences by seeking input. How can you learn more about your customers? What is your competition/opponent? A coach should never be afraid to ask questions of anyone he could learn from. Bobby Knight

8 The Coach Plays the game to win The Manager Provides excellent food at an affordable price with great customer service What is your mission? Do you win when students perform well in the classroom? How do you celebrate? What does hunger have to do with learning?

9 The Coach Reviews and improves continuously to win the game. The Manager Gathers data, analyzes it, makes changes to improve. What data do you have? What more do you need? What feedback is available? "The Coach does not play in the game, but the Coach helps the players identify areas to improve their game." Byron & Catherine Pulsifer

10 The Coach Walks and talks the part of a leader to the boosters and fans. How do look to your fans? How do you talk to your fans? How do you act to your fans? The Manager Is a role model for the team, the school staff, and the customers.
