PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE Leader 1:Gracious God, you have promised to hear us when we pray. Therefore in confidence and trust we offer our prayers to you this morning. We pray for the church, especially for John our Bishop, and for all who minister in this diocese. Enliven the church, Lord, for its mission. That we may be the salt of the earth and the light of the world. Leader 1:Breathe fresh life into your people. Give us power to reveal Christ Creator of all, lead us and all people into way of justice and peace That we may respect one another in freedom and truth. in word and action. Leader 1:Awaken in us a sense of wonder for the earth and all that is in it. Teach us to care creatively for its resources. God of truth, inspire with wisdom those whose decisions affect the lives of others. That all may act with integrity and courage. Prayers for the candidate: Let us now pray for Oskar Johns Titschel who is to receive the sacrament of new birth. Deliver him, O Lord, from the way of sin and death. Open his heart to your grace and truth; Fill him with your holy and life giving spirit. Teach him to love others in the power of the Spirit. Send him into the world in witness to your love. 3

Grant, O Lord, that all who are baptized into the death of Jesus Christ your Son may live in the power of his resurrection and look for him to come again in glory; who lives and reigns now and for ever. Amen. The Celebration of Baptism The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. We give you thanks, Almighty God and Father, for by the gift of water you nourish and sustain all living things. Blessed be God forever. We give you thanks that through the waters of the Red Sea you led your people out of slavery to freedom in the Promised Land. Blessed be God for ever. We give you thanks for sending your Son, Jesus. For us he was baptized by John in the River Jordan. For us he was anointed as Christ by your Holy Spirit. For us he suffered the baptism of his own death and setting us free from the bondage of death, and opening to us the joy and freedom of everlasting life. Blessed be God for ever. resurrection, We give you thanks for your Holy Spirit who teaches us and leads us into all truth, filling us with his gifts so that we might proclaim the gospel to all the nations and serve you as a royal priesthood. Blessed be God for ever. The Baptismal Covenant We give thanks for you have called Oskar to new life through the waters of baptism. Now sanctify this water, that your servant who are washed in it may be made one with Christ in his death and resurrection, to be cleansed and delivered from all sin. Anoint him with your Holy Spirit and bring him to new birth in the family of your Church, that he may become an inheritor of your glorious kingdom. We give you praise and honour and worship through your Son Jesus Christ our Lord, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, now and for ever. Blessed are you, our strength and song, and our salvation. Let us join with those who are committing themselves to Christ and renew our own baptismal covenant. Do you believe in God the Father? I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. Do you believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God? I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit 4

5 and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit? I believe in God the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Will you continue in the apostles teaching and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in the prayers? I will, with God s help. Will you persevere in resisting evil and, whenever you fall into sin, repent and return to the Lord? I will, with God s help. Will you proclaim by word and example the good news of God in Christ? I will, with God s help. Will you seek and serve Christ in all persons, loving your neighbour as yourself? I will, with God s help. The Giving of the Light: Baptismal Walk About Heavenly Father, we thank you that by water and the Holy Spirit you have bestowed upon this your servant name the forgiveness of sin, and have raised him, to the new life of grace. Sustain him, O Lord, in your Holy Spirit. Give him an inquiring and discerning heart, the courage to will and persevere, a spirit to know and love you, and the gift of joy and wonder in all your works. Amen. Receive the light of Christ to show that you have passed from darkness to light. Let your light so shine before others that they may see your good works and glorify God in heaven. Let us welcome the newly baptized. We receive you into the household of God. Confess the faith of Christ crucified, proclaim his resurrection, and share with us in his eternal priesthood. Holy God, Lover of Creation, we give you thanks and praise for in the ocean of your steadfast love, you bear us and place the song of your spirit in our hearts. When we turn from your love and defile the earth, you do not abandon us. Your spirit speaks through Huldah and Micah, through prophets, sages, and saints in every age, to confront our sin and reveal the vision of your new creation. 7 Blessed is the one who comes in the name of highest. the Lord. Hosanna in the Gracious God, in the fullness of time you sent Jesus the Christ to share our fragile humanity. Through Jesus life, death, and resurrection you open the path from brokenness to health, from fear to trust, from pride and conceit to reverence for you. Rejected by the world that could not bear the gospel of life, Jesus knew death was near. His head anointed for burial by an unknown woman, Jesus gathered together those who loved him. He took bread, gave thanks to you, broke it and gave it to his friends, saying, Take and eat; this is my body which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. After supper, Jesus took the cup of wine, gave you thanks, and said, Drink this all of you, this is my blood of the new covenant which is shed for you and for many. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me. And now we gather at this table in response to his commandment, to share the bread and cup of Christ s undying love, and to proclaim our faith. Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. Breathe your Holy Spirit, the wisdom of the universe, upon these gifts that we bring to you; this bread, this cup, ourselves, our souls and bodies, that we may be signs of your love for all the world and ministers of your transforming purpose.
