Process: Activity 1: Read The Little Red Hen in Sunshine. The students will read The Little Red Hen in the reading series, Sunshine. Some students will read the story independently and some will read it through guided reading. They will answer written questions concerning

3 the characters, the setting and the steps it took for Little Red Hen to bake bread. Story Map Paper The Little Red Hen Sunshine 1. When did the story take place? 2. Who were the characters? List the steps that it took for Little Red Hen to get bread?

4 6. 7. Activity 2: Read The Little Red Hen from the Literacy 2000 Series. The students will read The Little Red Hen. Some students will read the story independently and some will read it through guided reading. They will answer written questions concerning the characters, the setting and the steps it took for Little Red Hen to bake bread. Story Map Paper The Little Red Hen Little Book 1. Activity 3: Complete a Venn Diagram comparing the two books The students will use the two written responses from the two Little Red Hen books. They will complete the Venn diagram showing how the two books are the same and how they are different. Example: Use Kidspiration to make a Venn Diagram or use a any prepared copy

6 Activity 4: Write a story about what the Little Red Hen did the next day. The students will think about what the Little Red Hen did the next day after she baked her bread. They will illustrate their story. Then they will look at a rubric that each child will be given and monitor their writing and illustration against the rubric. Activity 5: Complete a Kidspiration activity. The teacher will discuss different kinds of animals, reptiles, fowl and insects and discuss which ones lay eggs. A file will be set up on the computer for each child with a template. Each child will have a turn at going to their file and looking at the pictures on the template. They will decide which ones lay eggs and move those pictures to the large box on the screen.

8 Activity 6: Complete a Syllable-type paper. The teacher will review the following syllable types: open, closed, magic e and talkers. Fourteen words from the Little Red Hen story appear on a paper that reviews the four syllable types. A syllable-type chart appears at the bottom of the paper. The children must look at each word and decide which column it goes under.

The students will be given a math problem solving paper dealing with the characters from The Little Red Hen. There will be a series of four steps to help them solve the math questions. At the mill the animals met snake, bird and cow. How many friends are there in all? Show your work! 3. Four of the friends had to go lay eggs. Who are they? Now how many friends are left? Show your work! 4. Pig and dog had to go home. Now how many friends are left? Who are the friends? Show your work! Activity 8: Follow a recipe and bake bread. Under the guidance of the teacher, the students will bake bread following sequenced steps of a bread recipe. Activity 9: Act out the story of the Little Red Hen. The class will be divided into three groups. Each group will decide how they want to present their version

11 of The Little Red Hen to the other groups. They will make masks of their characters out of paper plates. They will practice without using a script. Pictures of each play will be taken. The students will go to the computer lab, select the picture of their group and write about it. They will use the following check list to help them with their writing.
