9 Application Fee Waiver Northwestern participates in the Committee on Institutional Cooperation s (CIC) FreeApp program which may enable eligible students to apply to Northwestern and other CIC member schools without paying an application fee. FreeApp eligibility criteria and the online application can be found at the following CIC website: net/home/students/freeapp/ Introduction.aspx. QUESTIONS? Application Deadlines Application deadlines vary from program to program, so please consult your specific program directly to find your deadline. For your program s contact information, please visit our Academic Programs web page at tgs.northwestern.edu. Meeting a deadline requires that all materials be received by the program you are applying to, on or before the application deadline. Academic programs vary in their willingness to consider late applications. Applications that are incomplete at the time of the deadline may not be considered for admission. As a general rule, the earlier your materials are received, the better your chances for full consideration. 7

13 How to Apply Whether you are a degree seeking or non-degree seeking student, The Graduate School has created an online application form for all students who wish to apply for admission. Once you know all the requirements, your application deadlines, and have all your materials and procedures, you are ready to begin. Step One Visit our Admissions section and click on the Application Requirements page. There you will find a link to submit your application online. Step Two Each program has a different review schedule. Once a decision has been made on your application, a View Decision link will appear on your application. You will also receive an admission letter that includes your enrollment decision deadline. Step Three If admitted, you will be able to submit your decision to enroll via the online application form. Be sure to submit your decision by the enrollment decision deadline that was shared you in your admission letter. Application Requirements Admission requirements vary from program to program. Please be sure to visit the website of the program to which you are applying for their program requirements and deadlines. In general, to apply to The Graduate School, you will be required to: Submit an application online Pay an online application fee by credit card Submit your Statement of Purpose Upload your transcript or academic record Submit your test scores (if required by your admitting program) Upload two to three Letters of Recommendation 11

If you are a doctoral degree-seeking student, The Graduate School (TGS) may provide you with a fellowship or scholarship to fund your education and research pursuits. Master s vs. PhD PhD students are typically full-time and fully-funded. Master s degree students may be provided small scholarships from programs, but student loans are also available. 17 something for everyone Community Building Grants TGS funds as many proposals as possible for the Community Building Grants program, welcoming proposals from both independent groups of students and sponsored associations. The Community Building Grants program is designed to: Bring people together in a social context Integrate academic and social aspects of graduate life Improve communications and outreach Encourage creative expression through the arts Serve as a model for community building Student Associations In addition to a number of discipline-based organizations and special interest groups, there are nine major graduate student associations serving students on the Chicago and Evanston campuses: Graduate Student Association (GSA) Chicago Graduate Student Association (CGSA) Black Graduate Student Association (BGSA) Chinese Students and Scholars Association (CSSA) Indian Graduate Students and Scholars Association Graduate Student Association for Latino and Spanish Activities (G-SALSA) Queer Pride Graduate Student Association (QPGSA) Turkish Intercultural Club McCormick Graduate Leadership Council (MGLC) These groups promote interactions among graduate students, providing academic and social programs, and serving as advocates for graduate students on both campuses. TGS Day Out TGS Night Out To promote a stronger sense of community for our graduate students, The Graduate School sponsors quarterly TGS Night Out events held at local venues. TGS Day Out events are dedicated entirely to graduate student parents, postdoctoral fellow parents, and their families. 15
