Leviticus 17:11. The life-giving virtue of blood is partly due to oxygen carrying hemoglobin that resides inside the red blood cells. The greatest need of every cell in our bodies is oxygen. Without oxygen, we can survive but a few minutes. Anemia is the deficiency of red blood cells with hemoglobin that delivers oxygen to the hundreds of trillions of cells in our bodies. Think of red blood cells as buses and hemoglobin as seats on each bus. Think of those who sit in those seats as oxygen. You have to have enough buses in order to carry enough seats. You in turn have to have enough seats in order to carry enough people. Thus, with a shortage of red blood cells, we will not have enough oxygen for our cells. Therefore, the real problem with anemia is that it results in a lack of oxygen throughout the body. This condition is called hypoxia. The Bible says that we are fearfully and wonderfully made. The body responds to a lack of oxygen (hypoxia) by stimulating the production of a hormone primarily in the kidneys that in turn stimulates the bone marrow to make more red blood cells. As long as there is enough iron absorbed from the digestive tract, red blood cells will usually be able to manufacture and carry adequate supplies of hemoglobin. It should be noted that a primary component of hemoglobin is iron. Here is a medical school secret. "When blood is lost due to hemorrhage or menstrual bleeding, it takes 3 to 6 weeks to rebuild the normal red blood cells counts." Thus, women who have heavy periods or who have fibroid tumors and thus bleed excessively, cannot replenish the red cell count adequately before the next period begins. This is a major cause of anemia among women in this
2 country. In order to cure the anemia, two strategies must be employed. The cause of the blood loss must be removed. In most cases with women, it is a hormonal imbalance. There is usually too much estrogen and / or not enough progesterone. Yes, progesterone creams help and may need to be a part of the corrective regimen. However, there are some life-style considerations that must be addressed as well. This article will give you seven suggestions that will help you overcome anemia the refreshing way! Become a vegetarian 1. First of all, unlike what you may hear from traditional text books, being a vegetarian and eating lots of fruits and vegetables is indispensable. The flesh of dead animals is high in estrogen. Extra amounts of estrogen are shot into the blood streams of humans and animals when stressful situations present themselves. That should give you clues about the role of stress and anemia. When animals are about to be slaughtered, they are scared and fear breeds stress. Even though red meat is high in iron, you will lose it during heavy cycles because of the estrogen in the same steak or hamburger that gave you the iron. There is plenty of iron in certain natural foods and you can get it without estrogen overload! Trust God - You Must Reduce Stress 2. Due to the anemia - stress connection mention above, a closer walk with God is one of the best cures for blood loss anemia due to heavy cycles. Remember, stress raises estrogen levels and estrogen levels in turn cause heavy bleeding. There is a Bible scripture that helps us understand this. In 1 Sam. 4:19-21, we have the story of Phineas's wife who was very close to the due date of her pregnancy. She was stressed out by the bad news of the near concurrent deaths of her father in law and husband along with the abduction of the ark of God. The stress caused premature labor and killed her as soon as she had an opportunity to name the child. How did she die? Most women who die after delivering a baby, hemorrhage to death. Here is another medical school secret. "It is
3 known that estrogen causes contractions (monthly cramps) and heavy bleeding." It is safe to assume that this dear woman bled to death due to the premature, stress-induced labor contractions and excessive blood flow. This same kind of stress that we deal with everyday will keep estrogen levels elevated, cause severe PMS, painful cramps, fibroid tumors and excessively heavy cycles. Therefore, our stressful lives in this "keep up with the Jones" society leads to a plethora of female problems. The Bible says, "Trust in the Lord with all thine heart and lean not unto thine own understanding." Proverbs 3:5. Because "All things work together for them that love God..."(Romans 8:28), we must believe that when things seem to fall apart, they are actually falling in place! Moderate exercise for some 3. If the hemoglobin is not too low and the heart is not working too hard, moderate exercise is good for the anemic woman. Exercise helps reduce stress and promotes healthier circulation of blood. In turn, everything seems to work better. Why can't a severely anemic woman exercise? Here is another medical school secret. "The viscosity (resistance to flow) of your blood is determined primarily by the amount of red blood cells. The blood flows faster in anemic individuals. Because the blood is oxygen deficient, the vessels tend to dilate and allow even more blood to pass to the tissues with every heartbeat. All this means that your heart is working much harder because it must pump a greater volume of blood. When we exercise vigorously, there is a much greater need for oxygen to the muscles." The bottom line is that the heart just cannot keep up and the severely anemic person is at risk of heart failure. The suggestion to exercise is not for severely anemic individuals. You can talk to your doctor about the severity of your anemia. The point of this suggestion is that some exercise for some who are anemic is good because it helps reduce stress which will lower the estrogen levels that cause excessive blood loss. Although this next point is to the extreme, it is noteworthy. Many female olympic athletes do not have menstrual periods. Why? It is because they exercise so much. Avoid All Harmful Toxins
4 4. Of course, avoid all harmful habits and practices including smoking, drinking, and drugs. These are all toxic habits that hinder your body's ability to absorb iron or otherwise manufacture more red blood cells. Eat a good, natural diet 5. Eat more whole foods such as whole grains, fruits and vegetables. Refined foods such as white flour products are usually devoid of good, easy to absorb nutrition. Also, they tend to clog up the digestive tract and hinder the uptake of iron. Add juices and super foods for iron 6. Juices, super foods and beet powder are a great way to get more iron. Here's a medical school secret. "When your blood count is low, your body can actually increase the rate of iron absorption at least 5 times."
