Following these sets are instructions for making Name Poems with hard-to-rhyme letters and for very short and very long names. Included in each set are lists of example names. The dashes in these examples show where to break each name s spelling across the lines of the poems so that you can substitute names of different lengths for the name in each poem given. For double names, such as Jo Ann or Mary Jane, use the total number of letters to decide how they should scan, but ask the child to insert a clap between the first and second name. Breaking the names where they are hyphenated, the names Brook (B-r-oo-k) and Theresa (Th-eres-a) would be substituted for Erik in the poem as shown below. These include very short names and names that end in f, h, r, or x because these letters have few suitable rhymes. The key to making Name Poems for such names is to arrange the structure of the Name Poems so that other words or clapping can be used to support the rhythm and rhyme. (Note that you can also use these frames for rhymable names if you have run out of options in the previously provided sets.) Each poem that follows is prefaced with a template for how to divide names of different lengths so that they fit. For example, if the child s name is Joe, and the pattern for a three-letter name is X-XX -clap, then the spelling lines of the poem would be as shown next.
