2 - 2 - Introduction Welcome to the Rainforest! Today, we ll hopefully see lots of animals that have come from the Amazon Rainforest and South-East Asia. Can you identify and then circle the Amazon Rainforest? What about the South-East Asian Rainforest? Look at the photo on the front cover. 3 - 3 - First stop The Amazon Rainforest! Head to Spirit of the Jaguar! Our Journey begins in the Amazon (South American) Rainforest. Along with Jaguars, this area is home to several other South American species. They all eat different things tick the small box if you spot them, and use the big box to write what they eat! 4 - 4 - The rivers of South America are full of all sorts of amazing wildlife too! Have a look at the fish tank which is home to hundreds of aquatic animals! 5 - 5 - Let s make a food chain! A food chain is a diagram that shows what eats what. They are really easy! However, it s important to remember that: A plant, or producer, is always at the start of the food chain. Plant-eating animals are usually next these are called herbivores Animals that eat both meat and plants are called omnivores and so might be shown to be eating the plant or eating a herbivore. Meat eating animals are called carnivores. These are usually at the end of the food chain and will be shown to be eating herbivores or omnivores. If we were out on the African Savannah we might say: Grass Zebra Lion (A producer) (Herbivore) (Carnivore) Look at all the answers you wrote down on the last two pages can you make a food chain for the rainforest? Draw or write the species in the boxes provided.

6 - 6 - The problem for Jaguars Out in South America, Jaguars are being killed because farmers are moving cattle into the rainforest and worry that the Jaguars will kill their cows. Circle three words below that would save cows but NOT kill a Jaguar. Electric fences Guns Barns Poison Bells Not sure? A poster might help! Discuss in your group how the things that you ve circled help save Jaguars! Next stop - South-East Asia! Head to the Realm of the Red Ape. We re now going to take a quick look at a different part of the world that also has rainforests. The Orangutans live here in the Realm of the Red Ape, but in the wild we would find them on two islands called Borneo and Sumatra. On the map below they are the two dark islands. Can you find out which one is which?

7 - 7 - Bornean Orangutans look different from Sumatran. See if you can spot a Bornean female and a Sumatran female if you re lucky you might get to see a baby too! Use the box to list how they re different. Bornean Female Sumatran Female Orangutans spend most of their time in the canopy (treetops). How have they adapted (changed) to survive up there? 8 - 8 - Fast Facts Adaptations Quiz! Its not just Orangutans that have adapted to rainforest living! We re going to think about some fast facts to do with adaptations some are true, some are false! Circle them if they are true! 9 - 9 - And finally The Salvador Monitor has teeth like a: 1) Crocodile 2) Oranguatan 3) T-Rex Today we have taken a look at just a few of the rainforest animals found here at Chester Zoo but there are many more out there! They will all eat something slightly different and have different adaptations, so keep an eye out and explore! Good luck!
