1 2 nd GRADE POWER MATH STANDARDS - I will know basic addition and subtraction facts. - I can tell time to quarter hour. - I can count coins. - I will know place value to I can read a graph. - I can estimate to 10 and I can measure to inch and centimeter. - I can sort and name 2 dimensional and 3 dimensional figures. - I can recognize patterns. - I can use addition and subtraction to solve problems.

3 2 nd GRADE POWER MATH STANDARDS - I can give the answer to basic addition and subtraction facts with 90% accuracy on an all facts five minute timed test. - I can tell time to quarter hour. - I can count a collection of coins. - I can identify the place value of digits within numbers up to the 1000 place. - I can use addition and subtraction to analyze a graph. - I can estimate to nearest 10 or I can identify and name two and three dimensional figures. - I can recognize patterns. - I can measure to nearest inch and centimeter. - I can use addition and subtraction to solve real-world problems. 9/2011

4 2 nd GRADE ART POWER STANDARDS - Second Grade - I will know the difference between 2-D and 3-D Art. - I will learn about and be able to use a color wheel. - I will learn how different colors and overlapping can create the feeling of space. - I will learn that there are two different kinds of space in Art: positive and negative. - I will learn new ways to create and use line. - I will learn what a mixed medium is in Art. - I will learn how to clean and take care of my Art tools. - I will learn about and create a new sculpture medium called papier mâché. - I will learn new ways to build with clay. - I will learn new printing methods (relief and mono print) and learn how to create pattern. Students will expand their concepts of texture. - I will learn about famous Artists (Henri Rousseau).

5 2 ND GRADE COMPUTERS POWER STANDARDS Students will: - Use all equipment correctly, ensuring that it can be used by others who follow them. - Show Respect for community property through proper use. - Log in using a username and password as directed by the teacher. - Perform basic software operations. - Collaborate with other students using age-appropriate digital media to share information and works with teachers, other students, and family members. - Apply search commands from one resource to another. - Navigate in virtual environments with assistance as needed. - Give credit to the original creator of the work referenced. - Respect the opinions and perspectives of others in their group, class, or beyond. - Follow instructions about correct posture to minimize physical stress.

6 2 ND GRADE LIBRARY POWER STANDARDS I can read, watch and listen to stories in the library. I know how to find books and check them out I understand alphabetical order and that it is used in the library. I can find information and details in a true book. I can tell a classmate or teacher what I read about. I know that there are lots of different kinds of books. I can compare a book and a movie about the same story. I can talk about how pictures in books are made. I know how to tell if a book has won a Caldecott award. I can present information to my classmates in different ways.

7 2nd Grade Music Power Standards - I will be able to recognize and play the grouping of black keys on a piano and whether they are high or low sounds. - I will be able to identify and perform sounds that move up, down and stay the same - I will be able to identify and move to tempo changes in a song. - I will be able to understand note values of a quarter note, eighth note, and quarter rest. - I will be able to perform a steady beat and quarter note and quarter rest rhythms using notation on the piano keyboards. - I will be able to sing and play songs using loud or soft dynamics. - I will be able to recognize do, re on a staff. - I will be able to sing and/or play do, re pitches in combinations with other pitches using Kodaly hand signs. - I will be able to write do, re pitches in combinations with other pitches on a treble clef staff. - I will be able to understand what a composer is.

8 2 ND GRADE PHYSICAL EDUCATION POWER STANDARDS - I can run, walk, skip, leap and slide in movement sequences. - I can kick a stationary ball and rolling ball with strong force while maintaining good balance. - I can use an overhand throw for distance with good force. - I can throw overhand with proper form by stepping with opposite foot, elbow leads the throw and rotate hips. - I can identify strategies of simple games of faking in basketball or dodging in dodge ball and tag games. - I can participate in activities for increasing amounts of time that are enjoyable and challenging. - I can perform sit-ups, push-ups, and lunges. - I can explain the importance of drinking water during and after physical activity. - I can engage in moderate to vigorous physical activity outside of physical education class. - I can participate in physical activity showing positive social interactions.

9 2 nd Grade Reading Power Standards I can: Read and comprehend literature, including stories and poetry that are written at a second or third grade reading level. Ask and answer such questions as who, what, where, when, why, and how. Identify the main topic of a multi-paragraph informational text as well as specific paragraphs within the text. Describe the connection between a series of historical events, scientific ideas or concepts, or steps in technical procedures in a text. Determine the meaning of words and phrases in a text relevant to a grade 2 topic or subject area. Describe the overall structure of a story, including describing how the beginning introduces the story and the ending concludes the action. Know and use text features (e.g., captions, bold print, subheadings, glossaries, indexes, electronic menus, icons) to locate key facts or information in a text efficiently. Identify the main purpose of a text, including what the author wants to answer, explain, or describe. Use information gained from the illustrations and words in a print or digital text to demonstrate understanding of its characters, setting, or plot. Compare and contrast two or more versions of the same story (e.g. Cinderella stories) by different authors or from different cultures.

11 2 ND GRADE SOCIAL STUDIES POWER STANDARDS I Can - Compare how families live today and in earlier times. - Recognize and name the role famous people played in U.S. history - Identify Native Americans as the first people in North America. - Demonstrate knowledge of early explorers and settlers who came to America and the help of Native Americans to these people. - Use directional words to describe locations of people, places and things. - Identify the purpose of the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and the Bill of Rights. - Describe civic rights and responsibilities in a republic. - Give examples of rules in the classroom/school and community; provide reasons for the specific rules, and consequences for breaking the rules. - Recognize the key symbols, songs, and locations that represent our nation and state. - Describe key national holidays and explain why people celebrate them. 9/2011

12 2 nd Grade Speaking and Writing Standards SPEAKING: I can - Participate in and follow agreed upon rules for conversation and formal discussion in large and small groups. Follow two and three step oral directions. WRITING: I can- Write in a variety of modes including narrative, informative, and responsive. Use informal writing skills such as note-taking, listing, and mapping to record information or observations. Use pre-writing, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing.

13 2 nd GRADE LANGUAGE ARTS POWER STANDARDS Reading - Read aloud grade appropriate text with accuracy, fluency, and expression. - Notice when reading breaks down, re-read and us phonetic and other strategies to self correct. - Use context and word structure to help determine what words mean. - Read aloud grade appropriate text with accuracy and comprehension. - Monitor comprehension, re-read and use strategies to self correct when necessary. - Demonstrate literal and inferential comprehension by asking and answering questions about narrative and informational texts. - Read and listen to texts representing a variety of genres (such as poetry, folk tales, drama, fantasy, realistic fiction, informational, fables, biographies) from America as well as other countries. - Critically read and evaluate texts to determine the author s purpose. Writing - Writing in a variety of modes to express meaning, including; narrative, informative, and functional. - Use informal writing skills such as note taking, listing, and mapping to record information or observations. - Write sentences employing the composing processes of pre-writing, revising, editing, and final copy. Listening - Participate in and follow agreed upon rules for conversation and formal discussions in large and small groups. - Follow two or three steps oral directions.

14 Second Grade Science Power Standards I Can... - Measure, record and describe weather conditions using a thermometer. - Sort pictures of plants by how they look in the different stages of their life cycle. - Tell what plants need to stay alive and how these needs are met. - Raise questions about the natural world and seek answers by observing with my five senses. - Tell whether a push or a pull force makes an object move. - Describe an object by its color, size, shape, weight, and what it is made of. - Describe an object in different positions. For example: forward, backward, going up, going down, etc. - Tell how objects move in different ways. For example: in a straight line, a curve, a circle, back and forth, at different speeds. - Identify a problem and construct a product or process to meet the need or solve the problem.
