2 Alamo Colleges Educator Preparation Program (ACEPP) A student must successfully complete all four parts of the program to be recommended for Standard Certification. 1) Coursework 2) Test preparation for each exam (9AM-12PM on Saturdays or T-CERT) 3) Internship or Clinical Teaching 4) Pass all certification exams

3 Coursework Fast paced curriculum All courses are divided into Domains Each Domain lasts from 4 to 6 weeks

5 Student Responsibilities When Enrolled In Required Coursework The students must Complete all assignments on time/ no late work will be accepted. Prepare course materials out of class as they are assigned by instructors. Make proper arrangements with the instructor when assignments/tests are missed. Repeat and pay for any Domain they fail. Complete 50 hours of Field Observation and Reflection All coursework will receive letter grades (A,B,C, NR)

6 Student responsibilities concerning contact with program personnel The student must Update contact information with the Alamo Colleges Educator Preparation Program (ACEPP) staff and instructors in case of any changes (name change, address, phone numbers or ). Respond to all communication from staff and instructors within 48 hours of receiving notification. Main number (210)

7 Attendance and Tardy Policies Students of the Alamo Colleges Educator Preparation Program (ACEPP) attend classes and complete online coursework. It is a student s responsibility to inform his/her instructor in case of a tardiness and/or absence. Appeals and extenuating circumstances need to be presented to ACEPP Manager in writing within respective semester.

8 Professional Demeanor Communication, both written and oral, with colleagues, instructors, staff and young students, must always be respectful. Maintain a professional demeanor as a student in the classroom and as an intern/clinical teacher at ALL times. Must follow the Texas Educator s Code of Ethics. NO PHYSICAL CONTACT.

9 Dismissal Procedure for Misconduct 1 st violation merits a written warning 2 nd violation merits probation 3 rd violation merits dismissal Inappropriate contact with a student will result in immediate termination from the program

10 Field Based Experience and Reflection You will be placed at Northside ISD, San Antonio ISD, Judson ISD, Somerset ISD, or any other TEA approved district to complete your Field Based Experience. Please do not contact the districts to request placement, your ACEPP Director will make the initial contact. (You may choose another district with prior approval.) Keep a copy for your personal records and scan, fax or your log and reflection to pramirez43@alamo.edu A Criminal Background must be completed prior to placement.

11 Background Checks School districts conduct Criminal Background Checks on all employees. Students seeking to complete thirty-five (50) hours of field based experience will also be required, by the school districts, to submit information for a Criminal Background Check.

12 Test Preparation / Practice Tests Test preparation is required for TExES exams. There is one practice test for each TExES exam. Students may attend a test preparation, complete it online or take a practice test to qualify for approval to register for the TExES exam(s). Students must make an appointment with the ACEPP to take practice tests. Please call (210) to make an appointment. Students may take the PACT prior to entering the program.

13 Waived for students who passed the Pre-Admission Content Tests (PACT) or have a Bachelor s degree A program candidate who will be seeking an initial certificate may be required to take an assessment in reading, written communication, and mathematics. The candidate may demonstrate basic skills by meeting the requirements of the Texas Success Initiative (Texas Education Code, ) under the rules established by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board in Part 1, Chapter 4, Subchapter C of this title (relating to Texas Success Initiative); or demonstrate equivalent performance on a college entrance examination, valid for five years, using one of the following assessment instruments: SAT test with a minimum score of 500 on the verbal test and 500 on the mathematics test: or ACT test with a minimum score of 19 on the English test and 19 on the mathematics test GRE TSI Exemptions

14 Testing - TExES Exams The TExES exams are administered by the state. All required TExES exams must be passed before being considered for: Clinical Teaching or recommendation for Standard Certification. It is highly recommended that exams be taken during or immediately following coursework. The Bilingual Target Language Proficiency Test (BTLPT) is only required for Bilingual Certification students and should be taken during their first semester.

15 No Child Left Behind (NCLB) No Child Left Behind mandates that school districts must only employ teachers who are Highly Qualified. School districts risk losing federal funding for each teacher who is not Highly Qualified. A student in an Educator Preparation Program is considered Highly Qualified when he/she has passed the TExES Content exam in their certification area, completed a minimum of 30 hours of field observation and 80 hours in coursework. Students who have passed the TExES Content exam in their certification area have a greater chance of securing a teaching position than students who have not passed this exam.

16 Refunds The Alamo Colleges Educator Preparation Program (ACEPP) adheres to the Alamo Colleges District policy on all refund requests. Refund requests require approximately (ten) 10 days at a minimum to process and will be mailed to the address provided on the registration form. Refund Schedule: 100% prior to the first class meeting 0% after the first class meeting

17 Parking Permits Not required at Workforce Center of Excellence. If students will be parking in lots on the NVC, PAC, SAC, NLC or St. Philip s College, they must have a parking permit. Parking Permits may be purchased at the Bursars Office. Fees Fall - $50 Spring - $30 Summer- $18

18 Internships When a student secures a teaching position he/she must contact the ACEPP immediately. The Texas public school system requires an Intern teacher to have a Probationary Certificate in order to teach. A Teacher Internship of Eligibility (TIE) will be submitted by the EPP to the hiring school district, so that the Intern may apply for their Probationary Certificate. When a student secures a teaching position he/she is required to attend an information session with the ACEPP. The information session will cover the expectations and requirements of the Internship.

19 Standard Certification A student must successfully complete the following in order to qualify for Standard Certification: 1) All coursework associated with their certification area. 2) One school year Internship as a Teacher of Record or 12 weeks as a Clinical Teacher in a TEA accredited school. The Internship must be in the area in which the Intern is seeking certification. 3) Pass all certification exams

20 Miscellaneous A student must disclose to ACEPP staff if they currently hold or have previously held any teaching permits or certificates. A student must disclose to ACEPP staff if they previously attended any other Educator Preparation Programs/ Alternative Teacher Certification Programs and request a transfer.

22 H.B Content Additions: This came out of the legislature the first regular session. It has an implementation date of September 1, Cover the difficulty in securing a job in the I 35 corridor from Dallas, Fort Worth to San Antonio. Many people want to live in this area so there are plenty of teachers and the market is competitive. Be aware that the economy may affect the number of jobs available (funding, RIFS in school districts), availability of jobs in rural areas, especially in west, west Texas (Alpine, etc.), teachers delaying retirement because of economy, shortage areas of teachers, etc.

23 Legislature wants full disclosure on the status of the program with the SBEC Accreditation Status May 3, 2014 Pauline Ramirez Alamo College San Antonio, Texas Dear Ms. Ramirez: This is official notification that Alamo College has been assigned the following status under the Accountability System for Educator Preparation (ASEP): ACCREDITED Although this accreditation status is based on school year data, and is therefore referred to as the 2013 status determination, it will be effective from the date it was approved by the SBEC (May 2, 2014) until the next accreditation ratings are approved by the SBEC based on academic year data. In several weeks, as required by the TEC , accreditation statuses for all EPPs will be posted on the EPP Consumer Information webpage at The accreditation status for this academic year was based solely on Standard I, 80% or above in the all, gender, and ethnic group category. TEA will utilize a three year phase-in of Standards II, and IV and possibly III. In other words, your accountability status using Standard II and IV will be reported to you for the and academic years as impact data but not used to determine your accreditation status. The third year, , TEA will factor the standards set for Standards I, II, IV, and possibly Standard III in determining your program s accreditation status. Impact data for the academic year will provide you an opportunity to see what your accreditation status would be if Standards II and IV had been used and what the consequences to the program would have been. You will be receiving the impact data sometime in June. Please share this information with appropriate members of your staff.
