2 Speech Pathology Internship PROGRAM DESCRIPTION At Mayo Clinic in Arizona, Mayo School of Health Sciences offers an inpatient clinical experience internship to fulfill the requirements for the Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC) in speech pathology. You will provide diagnosis and treatment for a wide variety of speech, language, cognitive and swallowing disorders on the acute and rehabilitation units. Clinical experiences will be held at Mayo Clinic Hospital and in the Neurology Department at Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale. LaSalle Street, Suite 2400 Chicago, IL (800) (312) Fax: (312) FACILITIES Mayo Clinic in Arizona opened in 1987 as a premiere academic medical center in the southwestern United States, where advanced programs in medical research and education support the highest-quality patient care. Scottsdale Campus is centered around a beautiful five-story outpatient clinic. This modern facility contains 240 exam rooms, an outpatient surgery center equipped for general anesthesia, a full-service laboratory, a pharmacy, a patient-education library, an endoscopy suite and a 188-seat auditorium for patient, staff and student education programs. Services in more than 66 medical and surgical disciplines are provided, including programs in cancer treatment and organ transplantation. The Scottsdale Campus offers excellent education facilities, including classrooms, lecture halls, an extensive library and computer lab. The Samuel C. Johnson Research Center, a 75,000-square-foot building, houses scientists, trainees and students focused on molecular genetics, molecular immunology, molecular and cell biology, molecular chemistry and surgical research. On the Phoenix Campus, the state-of-the-art 205-bed Mayo Clinic Hospital, which opened in 1998, is the first hospital entirely designed and built by Mayo. It has been recognized as the Best Hospital in Phoenix several times by Phoenix magazine. 1

3 GRADUATION AND CERTIFICATION Upon completion of the Speech Pathology Internship, you will receive a certificate from Mayo Clinic College of Medicine, School of Health Sciences. When you successfully complete your internship, you will have satisfied your program requirements and the ASHA s Standard III-Standards and Implementation Procedures for the Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC) as it relates to supervised clinical observation and clinical practicum. HOURS Eight-hour days, five days per week. CLASS SIZE Each year, Mayo School of Health Sciences admits one student in its Speech Pathology Internship at Mayo Clinic in Arizona. This ensures you will receive close one-on-one instruction and a comprehensive educational experience. Curriculum The Mayo School of Health Sciences Speech Pathology Internship follows the curriculum from the Certification Handbook for Speech- Language Pathology from the American Speech Language Hearing Association (ASHA). Your clinical experience will include: 25 observation hours in adult speech/language diagnosis and treatment Clinical experience in diagnosis and treatment, with supervision Closely supervised and mentored clinical experiences Advancement of skills learned in the classroom through practical application Appropriate clinical documentation and professional responsibility Preparation for integration into a practice or other professional setting As part of this internship, you will: Provide diagnosis/treatment of speech, language, cognitive, swallowing disorders and patient/family education in the Rehabilitation and Acute units in the hospital setting Attend and participate in patient/family team care conferences 2

4 Gain experience in: - Oral-motor examination - Clinical evaluation of swallowing mechanism at the bedside - Videofluoroscopic evaluation of swallowing mechanism - Evaluation of cognitive/speech/language skills using appropriate standardized assessment tools Develop and implement treatment plans to include setting specific time-bound measurable goals and objectives Provide education/information to patients and caregivers/family members regarding various disorders, treatment techniques and compensatory strategies, including development of a home program for independent practice Provide an inservice to the Speech Pathology Department (may include Rehabilitation Department). Topic related to and based upon current research/literature to be mutually agreed upon by student and supervising SLP by midterm of internship and presented during week prior to final week of internship. Additional internship time may be added to include presenting an inservice, participation in journal studies and ongoing education or research opportunities. GRADING OR EVALUATION Mayo School of Health Sciences uses evaluative tools that include: Written examination Demonstration of skills Self-assessment exercises Faculty reviews Our system of evaluation provides students and faculty with a comprehensive look at individual performance, allowing students who are experiencing academic difficulty to be directed to appropriate support resources, including tutoring programs and counseling opportunities. CURRICULUM ESNHANCEMENTS Mayo School of Health Sciences is committed to developing and maintaining the very best education programs. 5 Faculty TEACHING FACULTY The Speech Pathology Internship Program draws its faculty from Mayo Clinic Scottsdale s clinical, scientific and technical staffs. They are chosen for their commitment to teaching as well as clinical practice and/or research. Many have published and lectured extensively and are highly regarded in their field. You will have access to these individuals throughout your training - with the opportunity to learn directly from some of today s best practitioners in the field of speech pathology. VISITING PROFESSORS/LECTURERS A hallmark of higher education excellence is the breadth and depth of information and experience provided students by the faculty and visiting experts. Many prominent professors visit Mayo Clinic to lecture on their areas of medical and scientific expertise each year. As a student of Mayo School of Health Sciences, you are encouraged to attend all conferences, lectures and seminars prepared for students, residents, fellows and consulting staff. Admissions PREREQUISITES For admission to Mayo School of Health Sciences Speech Pathology Internship Program, you must be enrolled in an accredited Speech Pathology program and make arrangements through your program advisor according to the Mayo Clinic Arizona application process. POLICIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES The following Mayo School of Health Sciences policies affect applications and admissions to its programs: English fluency Fluency in written and spoken English is essential to succeed in the program and to ensure patient safety. If English is a second language, you must be able to demonstrate fluency. Satisfactory performance on the Test of English as a Foreign Language examination or the Michigan Test of English Language Proficiency must be documented as proof of fluency. Your test results must be less than two years old. 4

6 Immunization record For the protection of patients, students and employees, and in compliance with state regulations, Mayo Clinic requires students to be properly immunized. You must show proof of the following immunizations before you begin a program at Mayo School of Health Sciences: Tuberculin test in the past six months Varicella, rubella and rubeola immunity Up-to-date diphtheria and tetanus shots Hepatitis B vaccination or signed declaration Documentation of vaccinations must be provided to Mayo Employee Health Service prior to the start of class. Health status Prospective students will undergo a health review at Mayo Clinic and will have the opportunity to update or receive the required tests and immunizations cited above. More information about the health review will be provided after you have been offered a program appointment. Appointment to the program depends upon successful completion of the health review. Background check Prospective students must pass a criminal background check and/or drug screening required by state laws, prior to enrollment to Mayo School of Health Sciences. Student responsibilities Mayo School of Health Sciences students are expected to attend all scheduled classes, examinations and assigned clinical rotations unless absence is approved. Students are required to exhibit professional and ethical conduct at all times. 7 TECHNICAL STANDARDS Mayo School of Health Sciences accepts students who are highly qualified for its programs. To be considered for admittance you should exhibit strong qualifications for the health profession you wish to pursue. Applicants to programs must possess the following general qualities: Critical thinking skills Sound judgment Emotional stability and maturity Empathy for others Physical and mental stamina Ability to learn and function in a variety of settings You must be able to perform the essential functions of the profession and meet the standards of the curriculum. Students seeking exceptions to these standards or reasonable accommodations should initiate their request with the program s director. Application Process POSITIONS Each year, one student is accepted into the Speech Pathology Internship at Mayo Clinic in Arizona on a competitive basis. The program begins in September. HOW TO APPLY Your application and all supporting documentation must be received by September 1 of the prior year. Incomplete applications will not be reviewed by the program s admissions committee. Applications must be received at least 8-10 weeks before the requested 6

8 start date of rotation and sooner if an affiliation agreement with your university is not yet in effect. The Allied Health Student Coordinator will forward completed applications to the Speech-Language Pathology Department for final review. If approved, the Allied Health Student Coordinator will then send a letter of acceptance and arrange for orientation activities. Tuition PROGRAM COSTS There is no cost to participate in Mayo Clinic s Speech Pathology Internship. Tuition is paid to your college or university during your internship. You are responsible for your living accommodations and transportation. STIPENDS Speech Pathology interns do not receive a stipend. Speech Pathology Career Overview FIELD DESCRIPTION Speech-language pathologists assess, diagnose, treat and help to prevent speech, language, cognitive, communication, voice, swallowing, fluency and other related disorders. Speech pathologists work with people who cannot make speech sounds or cannot make them clearly. This includes individuals: With speech rhythm and fluency problems, such as stuttering. With voice quality problems, such as inappropriate pitch or harsh voice with problems understanding and producing language. Who wish to improve their communication skills by modifying an accent. With cognitive communication impairments, such as attention, memory and problem solving disorders. Who have oral motor problems which cause eating and swallowing difficulties. 7

9 Speech and language problems can result from a variety of problems including hearing loss, brain injury or deterioration, cerebral palsy, stroke, cleft palate, voice pathology, mental retardation or emotional problems. Problems can be congenital, developmental or acquired. Speech-language pathologists use written and oral tests, as well as special instruments, to diagnose the nature and extent of impairment and to record and analyze speech, language and swallowing irregularities. Speech-language pathologists develop an individualized plan of care, tailored to each patient s needs. For individuals with little or no speech capability, speech-language pathologists may select augmentative or alternative communication methods, including automated devices and sign language, and teach their use. They teach these individuals how to make sounds, improve their voices, or increase their language skills to communicate more effectively. Speech-language pathologists help patients develop or recover reliable communication skills so patients can fulfill their educational, vocational and social roles. Some speech-language pathologists conduct research on how people communicate. Others design and develop equipment or techniques for diagnosing and treating speech problems. CAREER OPPORTUNITIES Speech-language pathologists held about 88,000 jobs in the U.S. in About one-half of jobs were in preschools, elementary and secondary schools, or colleges and universities. Others were in offices of speechlanguage pathologists and audiologists, hospitals, offices of physicians, speech, language and hearing centers, home health agencies or other facilities. A small number of speech-language pathologists and audiologists are self-employed in private practice. They contract to provide services in schools, physician s offices, hospitals, or nursing homes, or work as consultants to industry. Employment of speech-language pathologists and audiologists is expected to grow much faster than the average for all occupations through the year 2010, because the growing population in older age groups is prone to medical conditions that result in speech and hearing problems. In addition, medical advances are also improving the survival rate of premature infants and trauma and stroke victims, who then need assessment and possible treatment. 8

10 Employment in schools will increase along with growth in elementary and secondary school enrollments, including enrollment of special education students. Federal law guarantees special education and related services to all eligible children with disabilities. Greater awareness of the importance of early identification and diagnosis of speech, language and hearing disorders will also increase employment. The number of speech-language pathologists and audiologists in private practice will rise due to the increasing use of contract services by hospitals, schools and nursing homes. EARNING POTENTIAL Median annual earnings of speech-language pathologists were $52,410 in The middle 50 percent earned between $42,090 and $65,750. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $34,720 and the highest 10 percent earned more than $82,420. Speech-language pathologists with doctorate degrees who worked 11 or 12 months annually earned $62,500.
