BASF Pest Control Solutions Guide for Sensitive Customers
Sustainable Development at BASF At BASF, growth can only be successful in the long-term if economic success is combined with environmental protection and social responsibility. This will ensure a future worth living for coming generations. As The Chemical Company we meet this challenge. Since 2006, BASF has been an avid participant in the Global Product Strategy (GPS). Initiated by the International Council of Chemical Associations (ICCA), the GPS s goal is to enhance product stewardship best practices within the industry and throughout the product chain as its global contribution to the United Nations Strategic Approach to International Chemicals Management (SAICM). SAICM is a policy framework to foster the sound management of chemicals so that by 2020, chemicals are produced and used in ways that minimize significant adverse impacts on human health and the environment. We Ensure Sustainable Development Our strategy BASF 2015 describes the paths that we will take to succeed in being the leading company in the chemical industry. One of our four strategic guidelines is ensuring sustainable development. We base our activities on the principles of sustainable development, which means combining economic success with environmental protection and social responsibility, thus contributing to an enhanced future for coming generations. With our management systems and tools for sustainability, we create value for BASF and our partners in business and society. At the same time, our measures help ensure that we better fulfill the needs of customers and consumers. We see this as a longterm competitive advantage. For example, our eco-efficiency analysis can show our customers which products and processes are superior for their specific applications from both economic and environmental viewpoints. This analysis is becoming increasingly important to our customers. Global Standards for Product Stewardship As a globally operating company, we act in accordance with internationally recognized standards including the global Responsible Care initiative. This is the chemical industry s global voluntary initiative under which companies, through their national associations, work together to continuously improve their health, safety and environmental performance, and to communicate with stakeholders about their products and processes. This helps our industry to operate safely, profitably and
with due care for future generations. At BASF, we set ambitious goals for energy efficiency and climate protection, reduction of emissions, transportation safety, product stewardship, occupational safety and health protection. Thus we minimize the social and environmental costs caused by production, storage, transportation, sales, use and disposal of our products. Responsibility for Our Products Worldwide We make sure that our products do not pose a danger to people or the environment when they are used responsibly and in the manner intended. We ensure that our information on these topics is always up to date and are quick to include new information in our assessments. Since our regions are incorporated into a global product database, we are able to provide information about our products worldwide at any time. BASF provides safety data sheets for all the products we sell, not just where legally required. We update the data sheets as new data becomes available. They are now available in 34 languages. To encourage the proper and responsible use of our products, BASF offers training courses and workshops specially tailored to individual customer needs. BASF s employees and our customers can obtain information on BASF products around the clock using our global network of emergency hotlines. On request, we also carry out ecoefficiency analysis for our customers. BASF has a broad range of products for applications in numerous industries. Products may consist of a single substance or a number of substances. Environmental and Toxicological Testing Our products must not cause undue harm to people and the environment. Before BASF offers new chemical products to enter the market they must pass the necessary environmental and toxicological tests. Many products then must pass a review by the appropriate registration authorities. For more information on BASF s sustainability efforts, please visit
A Leader in Support and Training Pest management professionals (PMPs), working in homes and businesses, represent not only the companies they work for but also the pest management industry as a whole. PMPs instill trust and confidence, or don t, they are effective at managing pests, or aren t and they make responsible choices, or don t. To our customers, they are the face of our companies and our industry on every service performed. This is true now, was true 40 years ago, and will be true 40 years from now. We recognized this back in the 1970s when we created the Prescription Treatment approach which optimized technical results, provided guidance for science-based problem solving methodologies and maintained a customer-centric focus. The Prescription Treatment approach quickly swept through the industry and changed it from the inside out. Through Skill Development Seminars (SDS), training guides, and the hands-on efforts of our sales and technical representatives, we set out to educate PMPs on the fundamentals of problem solving, important information about pest biology, physical characteristics of surfaces, properties of formulations and modes of action of active ingredients, and how to communicate with customers. Furthermore, we forged a new frontier by conceiving Crack & Crevice treatments and defining many other concepts of targeted treatment techniques. Through this process exterminators were transformed to PMPs, which brought the industry into a new age the age of understanding that the PMP is the greatest asset in the pest management business. Green Options As market conditions evolve and consumer preferences change, one constant is that a well-trained PMP can adapt quickly and successfully to meet the ever changing needs of the industry. For example, take the recent surge in demand for green services. As the industry scrambled to define what green means, the process of exploring it revealed to many that although the term green means different things to different people, one thing is clear: the PMP and his system of decision making is central to any program considered green. The irony we uncovered was that in many regards through the Prescription Treatment approach, we were green before being asked to be green; but most of us never thought to promote services that way. If you look at the five elements of the Prescription Treatment approach: Communicate, Inspect, Prescribe, Treat and Follow-Up, you see the root elements of Integrated Pest Management (IPM) and the basis for our green service. The availability of products that have natural, Reduced Risk or exempt attributes certainly helps the PMP by providing more options to address consumer requests that can be considered when treatments are appropriate. Tip Inspect to gather the information that leads to good decisions.
Even within the context of being green, the role products play is arguably no more important than any other aspect of the process. Consider the importance of how a PMP communicates with customers over their concerns; how a PMP investigates the pest problem to achieve an understanding and awareness of the situation and conditions surrounding it; how a PMP prescribes a strategy based on all the facts of the situation; how a PMP minimizes risk as he performs the treatment by thoughtful product selection and properly executing targeted applications to the appropriate sites; how a PMP makes provision for assessing results and making sure the customer is satisfied with the outcome. Yes, product performance is important, but success or failure in pest management often resides with the PMP. A thorough inspection is one of the five elements of the Prescription Treatment approach, which has the root elements of IPM. Training and Field Support BASF s field support remains strong through our team of 30 Sales Specialists and Market Development Specialists, most of whom have extensive experience in pest management. They are extremely active working with PMPs to help develop new ways of improving their business and the services they perform. BASF s commitment to PMPs remains a top priority. The Skill Development Seminar (SDS) series, a perennial event that has trained almost 100,000 PMPs over its span, is standing testimony to this commitment. Last year alone BASF offered training seminars in 33 cities, bringing PMPs important information that helped shape the way they approach pest management. In 2011 we will continue this tradition. The most recent addition in PMP support is the SmartSolutions training series. The concept is simple as leaders in product development, technical expertise and training/support, BASF has drawn from its strengths to create solutions to commonly encountered problems facing PMPs. Each SmartSolution offers insights into problems, identifies the important concepts and provides recommended proven solutions to help PMPs improve the way they approach these problems when they are encountered in the field. SmartSolutions for bed bugs, exterior commercial rodent control, ants, termites, and occasional invaders are now available from BASF with many more to follow. SmartSolutions for Better Pest Control The hallmark of evolution is improvement. It means moving beyond yesterday s best to find new and better ways to succeed today. That s the idea behind SmartSolutions: some of the industry s smartest products, strategies and support, strategically combined to form innovative solutions to existing and emerging pest control challenges. SmartSolutions deliver comprehensive guides and uniquely intelligent solutions focused on bed bugs, termites, rodents, ants, flies, and more. Look to SmartSolutions for answers that work in the short and long term, and make the most sense for your customers and your business. Visit PestControl.basf.us/getsmarter for helpful information, training and marketing support on SmartSolutions.
Termidor Reduce your environmental footprint without sacrificing unparalleled performance. Termidor termiticide/insecticide is arguably one of the best examples in the pest control industry of a manufacturer s commitment to product efficacy, reliability and support. But it is no less of an example of BASF Pest Control Solutions commitment to smarter formulations and application methods and to helping PMPs increase their efficiency while reducing their environmental footprint. Low-dose technology and the patented PerimeterPLUS TM application method mean PMPs can successfully treat structures for termites with Termidor using far less water and active ingredient than older, more labor intensive treatments. Of course, Termidor s excellent termite control efficacy and residual control result in fewer applications, fewer failures, and fewer retreats all which indirectly contribute to lower overall environmental impact. Termidor has similar environmental footprint advantages when used to control ants and perimeter pests. Here, too, using our Termidor chemistry means less chemical is needed to treat. Feedback from researchers and end users suggest that competitive products exhibit less efficacy when applied in a treatment area equal to Termidor s standard as a one foot up, one foot out foundation application and 18 band treatments around doors, windows, vents, pipes and other exterior openings. When compared to competitive GPC products max-level perimeter band treatments, Termidor requires both significantly smaller treatment zones and significantly less chemical. Termidor s nonrepellent technology is not only extremely effective against ants and perimeter pests, but it is also applied outside the structure, which most homeowners consider preferable to applying product in the internal environment of their homes. While repellent products can be applied outside homes, too, such applications run the risk of trapping insects inside the structure, which can result in callbacks and the application of more chemical. While the millions of dollars BASF invests in research and development help ensure Termidor s formulation and application methods help reduce environmental impact, this investment can maximize impact in another area your bottom line. Tip Evaluate all the treatment options employ multiple management strategies and tools if the situation calls for them. This can include mechanical, biological and/or chemical.
Tip Treat using effective techniques and materials that support the strategy. Less chemical and fewer callbacks have a dramatic effect on the overall cost to use Termidor versus other termite and GPC control products. A single, successful Termidor termite treatment using the patented PerimeterPLUS application method can cost far less than a competitive treatment that requires more water and chemical to begin with and may result in more callbacks and retreats. For ant and perimeter pest control, the savings of a standard Termidor application versus competitive products max-level band treatments can be significant: Product Perimeter Band Cost Comparison Chart for 200 Linear Foot Home Treatment Zone Total Area Treated Volume Rate (Gallon/1000 Sq. Ft) Total Gallons Needed Cost Per Finished Gallon Cost of Treatment Termidor SC 1 ft. up x 1 ft. out 400 sq. ft gal. $1.71 $1.03 Temprid SC 3 ft. up x 7 ft. out 2000 sq. ft gal. $2.22 $11.10 Transport GHP 3 ft. up x 7 ft. out 2000 sq. ft gal. $1.40 $7.00 Arilon 3 ft. up x 7 ft. out 2000 sq. ft gal. $0.87 $4.35 Costs per treatment calculated from product cost quotes provided from three major distributors across the United States. Research has shown that the competitive materials to Termidor listed above require a larger treatment zone and a higher volume rate compared to Termidor to achieve similar levels of control. Competitive product labels list larger treatment areas for structural perimeter treatments. Temprid is a trademark of Bayer Environmental Science. Transport is a registered trademark of FMC Corporation. Arilon is a trademark of Dupont. The appeal to homeowners of a nonrepellent, low-odor product that stays outside the structure and delivers renowned performance should not be overlooked in terms of new and cross-sell business. All told, Termidor is clearly one of the smartest choices you can make for your business in terms of environmental impact and long-term profitability. Termidor is not registered for termite use in the state of New York. PerimeterPLUS is not approved for use in Louisiana. Termidor makes our homes more sustainable, results in less call backs and re-treatments and fewer repairs. I believe Termidor is one of the greenest products in our tool box. - Bert Snyder, Vice President, Palmetto Exterminators
MotherEarth Naturally derived. Unnaturally effective. While increased environmental sensitivity, among both homeowners and regulatory bodies, has created challenges for pest management professionals, it has created opportunities as well. 10 Alpine The unique advantages of Reduced Risk* status insecticides. Prescription Treatment brand Alpine Insecticides strike the perfect balance between dependable efficacy low toxicity to non-target organisms. All Alpine formulations contain the nonrepellent active ingredient dinotefuran, which works through contact and ingestion and disrupts insect nervous systems for fast, effective control. Equally important, dinotefuran has been granted Reduced Risk* status for public health use by the EPA. Reduced Risk* status means the chemical has: Low impact on human health Low toxicity to non-target animals (birds, fish, plants, etc.) Low potential for groundwater contamination Low use rates Low pest resistance potential Compatibility with EPA Integrated Pest Management practices Alpine formulations are currently available as a pressurized insecticide, a dust insecticide, and as an ant and termite foam. Fall 2010 will see the debut of Prescription Treatment brand Alpine Ant Gel Bait and Prescription Treatment brand Alpine Cockroach Gel Bait, the first and only gel baits for the professional market utilizing a Reduced Risk active, approved for food handling areas and free of the Big Eight food allergens. In addition to the Reduced Risk* status appeal Alpine insecticides offer your customers, here are some of the performance advantages each Alpine formulation offers you: Prescription Treatment brand Alpine Ant and Termite Foam Compliant with Termidor termiticide/insecticide 10-year pledge requirements** Quick control of isolated subterranean and drywood termite infestations Highly effective on ants known for interior infestation (such as Argentine, ghost, pharaoh and white footed) as well as foraging carpenter ants Dry foam solution (30:1) allows for quick delivery into voids and other immediate-need interior/outdoor areas Great sales closer: Handle termite infestations (especially swarmers) immediately and pacify homeowners fears until the day of Termidor treatment Tip Change the environment by removing food and water sources.

Aerosols & System III A perfect partnership. Precision targeted aerosol applications are one of the best techniques pest management professionals have for delivering highly effective performance while optimizing the amount of pesticide used. BASF Pest Control Solutions offers a complete range of Prescription Treatment brand pressurized products for Crack & Crevice and other targeted applications. When used with BASF s unique System III, these aerosols can be applied even more effectively with reduced exposure to the applicator and non-targets. In short, Prescription Treatment brand pressurized products and System III help PMPs Work Smarter. Superior Formulations Prescription Treatment brand pressurized products feature innovative formulations with superior efficacy and offer flushing and killing power for a wide variety of pests including ants, cockroaches, fleas, and spiders. With no mixing, cleaning, or maintenance, these aerosol products provide substantial time savings and the flexibility to move from one product to another as needs change. Targeted Applications The System III makes it easy to deliver precision applications of Prescription Treatment brand aerosols into harborage areas where pests eat, rest and reproduce. It optimizes product flow for more precise delivery, reducing product use and extending the life of compatible aerosols by up to 67 percent. Professional Appearance The small applicator and long, coiled hose of the System III make treating hard to reach cracks, crevices, and voids practical. Also, the lightweight, belt mounted system keeps your hands free for flashlight or other tools uses. Tip Educate customers on pest behavior, habitat, feeding and breeding areas and simple prevention tips.
Advance Termite Bait System Low impact. Less chemical load. Proven efficacy. Many of today s environmentally-conscious homeowners are as concerned about the environmental impact of a termite treatment as they are about protecting their home from termite damage. BASF goes to great lengths to help PMPs use Termidor termiticide/insecticide judiciously without compromising its unparalleled control. But some sites are not suited for or the homeowners simply aren t interested in a liquid-based treatment, even one as good as Termidor. The Advance Termite Bait System gives pest management professionals a way to offer these homeowners a highly effective, low-impact, easy-to-service termite control, prevention, and monitoring alternative. With a next generation station design with two customized food sources and maximum wood-to-soil contact, the Advance Termite Bait System quickly generates hits and aggressive colonization. It utilizes a unique matrix, called Puri-Cell to greatly enhance termite feeding. The matrix features compressed food-grade purified cellulose for enhanced feeding and more matrix in less space. The clear termite inspection cartridge remains in place for days and is easy to check and replace, minimizing termite disruption. Undisturbed termites stay in place to feed on the bait rather than abandon the station. Proven IGR chemistry transfers through the colony, leading to aggressive colony elimination. The Advance Termite Bait System even offers PMPs a completely active chemical-free way to help ensure termites will not invade a customer s home undetected. By using active-ingredient-free Advance termite stations for standalone monitoring, (marketed to homeowners as Advance Termite Monitoring), PMPs can lay the groundwork for a full Advance Termite Bait System installation once a monitor reveals termites. The Advance Termite Bait System (ATBS) offers a unique combination of patented advantages in quick detection, killing power, technician serviceability and business enhancements that maximizes performance and profit potential. In addition, a highly flexible purchase plan, with no reporting requirements, keeps you in charge of your customer base and renewals.
For homeowners who might not want a preventative liquid treatment, but would be amenable to a liquid treatment in a curative situation, standalone monitoring with Advance termite stations gives PMPs the option to use a Termidor curative treatment if a monitor reveals termites. The Advance Termite Bait System is an excellent low impact termite option because: Ultimately, even if your termite program is built around the unparalleled performance of Termidor, it makes sense to have an effective baiting solution like the Advance Termite Bait System in your arsenal. Not only will you be prepared for any homeowner treatment preference you encounter, but you ll never again have to lose business to a competitor because you can t meet a potential customer s needs. l No need to apply hundreds of gallons of termiticide around a structure l Less invasive than drilling, trenching and rodding l The active ingredient is secured below the ground in the station housing, resulting in less contact l Active bait only needs to be applied to the system when termites are present Our feeling is that it s the most environmentally responsible way to treat termites. It fits into our company s green practices because it not only eliminates the termites, but there s also no chemical being applied to the ground. - Brent Boles, Owner, Schendel Pest Services Tip Certify your company. Visit NPMAgreenpro.org for more information on the Green Pro program.
Put Our Green Approach to Work for Your Customers As a pest management professional, you face an array of situations that call for different treatment programs. It s up you to make environmentally responsible choices as a representative not only of your business, but also the industry. Whether that s using the lowest effective dose of active ingredient or a product with an active ingredient derived from plants, meeting customer needs for more environmentally friendly solutions is the first step of every PMP s green Integrated Pest Management (IPM) program. Today, PMPs can access state-of-the-art resources to help them identify the right green solutions, provide solid recommendations based on customer needs, and follow up on the treatment to ensure a problem is solved. Our Prescription Treatment approach offers simple guidelines that easily fit into any IPM program and in many cases, mirror what PMPs are already doing. You can also benefit from BASF research and development that has led to product options for green pest management programs. Termidor termiticide/insecticide, for example, offers unrivaled termite control efficacy and residual control. Fewer applications, failures and retreats contribute to lower overall environmental impact. Reduced Risk Prescription Treatment brand Alpine Insecticides, our MotherEarth line and the Advance Termite Bait System, also offer homeowners high-performance, broad-spectrum pest control options that appeal to environmental sensibilities. BASF has options that are effective and demonstrate a respect for the earth. Our goal is to continue to offer PMPs solutions to meet ever-changing customer demands and help you succeed.
