4 Water Framework Directive based on ecology: Good ecology is determined by four key aspects of the environment: Biology chemical water quality physical structure water quantity Based on water bodies. And requires achievement of good status by the adoption and implementation of actions. There are three rounds of planning. Co-delivery.

8 XXX The improvement to overall good status in the first planning cycle is limited because: all aspects of a water body s ecology and chemistry have to be at good status. more research is needed in many areas before we know how, or how best, to reach good status. at present we do not know what is causing failure or how technically to improve things. the most cost-effective way to make improvements is to spread them over a longer timescale.

10 Status 2015 By ,265km of rivers will be at Good Status. 1,700km of rivers improve for one or more elements: 772 km of rivers and 7 lakes will improve class for phosphate 96 km of rivers will improve class for ammonia 112 km of rivers will improve class for dissolved oxygen 602 km of rivers will improve class for fish 126 km of rivers will improve class for invertebrates 185 km of rivers will improve for diatoms 43 km of rivers and 2 lakes will improve for macrophytes

YELLOW - consultations finalised, but awaiting adoption. RED - consultation have not yet started, or are ongoing.

13 Surface water monitoring stations Highest number: 12,807 monitoring stations in UK. Highest density: 52 per 1,000km 2 in the UK. EU report COM(2009)156 states: the UK shows a significant monitoring effort to ensure confidence in the monitoring results.

23 Commitment to deliver the plans Addition of KPIs to all 12,500 uncertainty investigations for England and Wales. Anglian has 19% of this total (2,340). Delivery of the commitments in the frbmp (Annexes B,C and D). Delivery of the Water Body improvements towards Good Status inc. 2% ambition target Delivery by December 2012, for all measures and investigations.

24 Stakeholder engagement

25 Liaison Panel Meetings twice a year in 2010 and Revised Terms of Reference: Panel to review progress and provide guidance. Two-way sectoral links are important. Delivery of measures both in the Plan and beyond. Start planning for the second round. Concern over local authority/spatial planning representation and engagement Water Cycle Studies not taken account of in all Core Strategies. Review of membership political changes, but also refocus on delivery.
