2 Figure Drawing with Sharon Verhoef Drawing supplies: 18" x 24" newsprint pad with a drawing board with clamps** that will accommodate the pad - so you have a firm backing. Vine charcoal A kneaded eraser a stronger eraser, like "pink pearl" ** A really stiff piece of corregated cardboard from a box that something big came in (like a fridge) or a piece of masonite with clamps also works well. Suppliers: 1. You can get all these at Art Systems on SR436 one light south of Howell Branch Road. Art Systems usually has good deals on pads, etc. This is a FL family owned company. 2. Alternately, Sam Flax is also a good art supply store on East Colonial Drive. I believe that they will both give student discounts if you tell them that you are currently taking a class at the Maitland Art Center and give them the name of your instructor. Sam Flax is a National chain. NOTE: If you already have supplies or prefer drawing with certain materials, then just bring what you have.

3 PASTEL CLASSES For your beginning pastel class you will need some basic supplies and materials. These are: A SET OF PASTELS: You may use oil pastels, but I recommend a set of soft pasteels, commonly recognized as chalks. NU Pastel, by prisma color These are firm (hard) pastels which is recommended to begin your drawing. You may only need a few of the dark colors for this. A 12 count bos will cost about $14.00 to #15.00 There arre several other brands which run (12 count) up to (36 count). They run between $2.99 and $ You may want to purchase the Rembrandt, large 200 count box, but that will probably run upwards of $ but they are excellent pastels and I have used them for years. PASTEL PAPER: Two companies I know of make good pastel paper, Strathmore and Canson. I recommend the smoother Canson paper. 24 sheet pads (size 18x24) run between $15.00 and $18.00 Incificual sheets (usually Canson) larter than 18x24 will run between $3.00 and $7.00 a sheet. I recommend getting a light grey or light blue grey color. BASIC PASTEL PENCILS: These will be used for making fine detail work of you want to get that exact in your painting. A BOTTLE OF 70% RUBBING ALCHOL. ARTISTS TOTE BOARD: This is like a large clip board with a big rubber band to hold the bottom of the paper. I recomment a 23x26 size. This will give your paper stability while you are painting and drawing. SCOTCH MASKING TAPE: 3/4 inch to A 2 inch wide roll. 4 Chinese Brush Painting Basics Class Syllabus: Introducing students to the ancient art of Chinese Brush Painting. Class 1 History of Chinese Brush Painting. Introduction to materials. Samples of master s work. Intro to rice paper. Papyrus or rice paper, invented by the Chinese write on it with ink. Various brushes and how they paint. Holding the brush. Using ink, felt, rice paper. Introduction of the Four Gentlemen, the foundation of this art form. The first strokes and color loading the brush. Practice simple strokes: bamboo trunk, leaf, and flowers. Make a value scale, 7 tones in grey to black, done with Sumi-e ink on rice paper. Class 2 Basic Orchid stroke. Paint the Chinese wild Orchid on a cliff with rocks. Discuss the symbolism of the flower of Spring. Practice the strokes and then add the colored flowers. Class 3 Basic Bamboo stroke. Paint the Summer Bamboo with trunks and leaves. Discuss the symbolism of the Bamboo. Class 4 Basic Chrysanthemum. Paint the Autumn flower with stem and leaves. Discuss the symbolism and add the colors of leaves and flowers. Class 5 Basic Plum Blossom and branch. The Winter flower is the last and most complicated of the Four Gentlemen. Discuss the composition, symbolism of the flowers and branches. Class 6 Final paintings are mounted on Masa paper and prepared to be framed and matted for display. Practice names in calligraphy. Add chops and names to final paintings.

5 Materials: Sumi-e ink (either bottled liquid or ink stick + grinding stone for ink stick), rice papers, Chinese Brushes: one large and one small combination brushes, set of Chinese colors in tubes. A color palette. 4 Paper weights. White felt. Water containers. For mounting rice paper: Large sheet of Masa Paper, masonite or plywood, brown paper tape, Metylan,,,,,,,,,,,,,paste will be provided. 2 inch Hake brush. 6 inch Handi Painter applicator. 6 Discoveries in Watercolor I am always asked where to find these items. There are several places locally. They are: Art Systems - Semoran Blvd. Casselberry. (One light South of Howell Branch Rd.) JoAnn's Etc. - East Colonial Blvd (Behind Red Lobster, across from Fashion Square) Michaels - East Colonial Blvd. at the Colonial Promenade Mall. Sam Flax - East Colonial at Shine Street. Watercolor paper - (140# to 300# paper) For the beginning class, I recommend at least 2 pads of 140# watercolor paper (9 x 12). With the exercises planned you will be going through a lot of paper in the beginning. This doesn't have to be an expensive experience. Later in the class we can discover the Arches 300# paper. Various soft brushes - Up to 1 to 1.5 inch width A variety of flat and round brushes will be needed. Make sure you get some that holds their shape when they are wet. Watercolor paints - (tubes or cubes) I recommend the "Artist Grade" paints. There are several brands out there. The one's I use are: "Windsor Newton" - This is a wonderful paint, but quite expensive. "Reeves" - This is also a good paint, but not quite as expensive, and excellent for what we are doing. I recommend the 18 count package. There are some new ones out. Ask your sales technition at the store about the Artist Grade Paints. Masking Fluid - A small bottle is all you will need. If you're not sure, ask the attendant or sales person at the supply store to help you find it. Mixing tray - I recommend the larger pallet tray that you can place your paints around the side and mix in the middle. Masking tape - I recommend the inexpensive Scotch brand of 3M manilla (tan in color) masking tape. I use this to secure the paper to a firm surface to insure it doesn't wrinkle or warp when the paper gets wet. pencils and erasers - Get some hard/light led pencils to draw with. You don't want a lot of dark heavy pencil lines in your painting.

7 Xacto knife, or sharp blade - We will be using this to create effects. Foam Core (32 x 40 )- We use Foam Core in class to tape down our paper. Foam Core is firm enough to keep the paper flat, and light enough to carry around and not weight down your box. Sketch pad - In the beginning you might use the sketch pad to take notes. Then you begin sketching subjects to paint. Roll of paper towel - Paper towels are always handy to have around. After all, we are dealing with WATER. I find that Viva works best. Container for water. Quart size (or larger) NOTE: There will be more items we will add to our box as time goes by. After 30 years, I'm still adding to mine.
