1 SUNDAY KIDS CLUB GENEROSITY Recommended Schedule Lesson 50 mins Grades 1-2 Materials Children s Moment: Three containers (various sizes) Wrapped Candy Play Money in Small Bills Pictures/Clip Art of Items a Child Would Want to Buy (types of toys, favorite foods, vacations to Disney or a tropical place, etc.) With Play Prices Included Pictures/Clip Art of Ways to Give Money (church, a friend in need, a charity, a missionary, etc.) Bible For Each Child: Memory Verse Card Crayons/Markers (optional) Assorted stickers The Widow s Offering coloring sheet AV NEEDS Music Video: I can Give

2 THEME: Kids discover the treasure of generosity. SCRIPTURE: 2 Corinthians 9: 6-11, Luke 21: 1-4 LEARNING OBJECTIVE: The children will learn what it means to give generously and sacrificially. MEMORY VERSE: 2 Corinthians 9:8 NLT God will generously provide all you need. Then you will always have everything you need and plenty left over to share with others. LEADER PREP: We are not only recipients but administrators of his grace, which helps us live open-handed rather than tight-fisted. When we experience the truth that it is more blessed to give than to receive we reflect God s nature for God so loved the world that He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will have eternal life. Write memory verse on cards prior to lesson for the kids to decorate. Tips: 1. For the hook activity, keep the play money in small amounts the children know how to count. For 1-2, the money should be in ones and fives. Keep the dollar amounts for the items to buy easy to count. For example, a child is given 10 one dollar bills to start. A vacation costs $5 and a stuffed animal costs $1. Then, the child has $4 left which they can keep or give a chosen amount away to a missionary or to church. 2. There is no need to include a price on the ways to give as you want the children to have the freedom to give as much or as little as they choose. 3. The ultimate goal of the activity is not to teach the children how to exchange money, but to think about how much they chose to give away versus how much they chose to spend. Keep it simple 4. Choose one child who will be given the smallest amount of money during the activity. Discuss with a child ahead of time that they will not buy, but instead give all of their money away. CHILDREN S MOMENT Having Plenty Focus: A key insight into Christian stewardship comes from Paul s words to the Corinthian church about sharing their abundance. God has provided us with every blessing in abundance, so we will always have enough to share. In this lesson each child will make a decision about how much is enough for them, then confront the decision about what to do when they have more than they need. Arrangements: You will need three containers, the largest should be about the size of a cup, and more than enough wrapped candy (peppermints, kisses, etc) to overflow that cup. Make sure their is considerably more than one piece of candy per child.

3 LEADER: I m so glad to see you We have some hard work to do today. I have three containers: this little one, this medium sized one, and this large one. Which of these do you think will hold enough candy so you ll each get a piece? CHILDREN: That one (They will probably choose the largest.) L: Well, it so happens I brought some candy along. So let s see if you are right. (Pour so much candy into container that it overflows. Express surprise.) My goodness, there s more candy than we can fit into our container. Hmmm. What should we do with the extra pieces? C: Keep it Eat it L: We could do that. But didn t you say that if I filled this container we would have enough for each of you? C: (Reluctantly) Yes. L: Maybe you could share the extra candy with some of these people who have the courage to sit here in front of the church. (If your congregation is smaller distribute candy to all the church members) What do you think? Here: take this overflow and share it with them. (Children take candy and distribute it. When they return, distribute one piece of candy to each child and ask them to keep these in their pockets until Sunday School is over.) How did it feel to share? Yes Wasn t it great to have more than enough? One of the neat things about being a Christian is seeing how God gives us more than enough- more than we need- of things like food, clothing, toys, love, and happiness. And then we can take some of those extras and share them with others. Let s have a prayer to thank God for giving us so much and for helping us to share with others. PRAYER (Break down the prayer into parts. The kids repeat each phrase after you) Dear God, Thank you for loving us so much Help us to know that you give us everything we have. Help us to give freely and share everything you have given to us with others. Amen. LESSON Memory Verse Cards Prior to lesson print memory verse on memory verse card. (Use large index cards or heavy paper you already have.) Have children decorate their card with a boarder using crayons, markers, stickers (if available), etc. While they are working, encourage the children to say the verse with you several times. Put a small magnet on back of card and remind kids to take them home at the end of class.

4 Hook: 1. Pass out pre-designated amounts of play money to the children giving the children varying amounts. 2. I am passing out some money to all of you. You will not all receive the same amount. I first want each of you to count how much money you have. Allow them time to count their money. 3. This morning you will get to use your play money to buy some pretend things you would like. You also can choose to give some of your play money away. 4. Lay the pictures of items to buy and ways to give out on a table or tape the pictures to the front chalkboard. 5. Each of you will come up to the front and choose some things you want to buy and then give me the money needed to buy it. You may also choose to take some of your money and give it away. 6. Each child will come up to buy and/or give. 7. There will be one child you have chosen and spoken with ahead of time who will be given the smallest amount of money to begin the activity. Discuss with them ahead of time that they will not buy, but instead give all of their money away. 8. After the completion of the activity, discuss with the children what occurred. Talk about how much money they had to start, what they chose to buy, and how much they chose to give away. Be sure to discuss with them the why and reason behind their choices. Talk about the child who was given the least, yet gave away everything. Book 1. Thinking about what we just experienced together, I am going to read from my Bible Luke 21:1-4. Look 1. In this passage, Jesus is observing what people were giving to the church. The rich people put in a lot of money and then a poor widow came to give two small copper coins which equaled one penny. Who do you think God appreciates more? The rich people who gave a lot or the poor widow who gave a penny? Receive answers from the children. 2. Reread verse 3. Why does Jesus say the widow put in more than anyone else? Didn t she only give one penny? Receive answers from the children. 3. Jesus explains to us why in verse 4. The rich people, even though they may have put in a lot of money, it was still only a little bit of what they had. But, the widow gave everything she had to the church. She only had one penny and she gave away the whole penny. Relate the rich people and poor widow back to what happened during the hook part of your lesson. 4. The poor widow gave generously and sacrificially. What do you think it means to give generously? Receive suggestions from the children. 5. To give generously, means giving away your money without being concerned about having enough left over for yourself. Giving generously means you give a lot of what you have.

5 6. What do you think it means to give sacrificially? Receive suggestions from the children. 7. To give sacrificially, means we are not selfish with our money because we want to buy a new video game or doll. Instead we give up getting our new toy to give the money away to the church or the poor. We give away what we have as a sacrifice for what we want. Play Music Video: I can Give created by Crossroads.
