1 5973N Dual Network Card Procedure for Windows NT Systems MS ChemStation G1701DA Please take a moment to review the following paragraphs. This document is written and intended to be used by individuals experienced with Microsoft Products and Networking within your Company s IT or IMS department. As outlined on page 85 of the Software Installation Manual, connecting the 5973N to the customer-building network is not part of the installation and familiarization. This option can be purchased and it is to be done after Initial Installation and Familiarization has been completed. It is assumed that an Agilent Technologies Customer Engineer has installed the 5973N Networked Data System and all functional tests have been completed. BEFORE YOU BEGIN It is your responsibility to make all necessary backups of all data and important information on the Chemstation PC. Make written notes of all the current addresses and setting in the Chemstation PC s Network Configuration, the MSD CONFIG Program addresses and instrument names. You will need the G1701DA Software Installation Manual Part Number G If this manual has been misplaced, you may download an electronic copy from the Agilent Technologies. In the following examples, the FIRST LAN-card is dedicated for instrument communication with the 5973N MSD and 6890N GC system. This separate network adapter card should NOT be connected to the house net for two reasons: 1. To avoid problems in the communication between the Chemstation PC and the GC and MSD in case of heavy network traffic or problems on the building network (e.g. to avoid interruption of overnight sequence runs) 2. To allow for easy installation of the CAGBootP Server Program, SICL Drivers, and G1701DA software. The SECOND LAN-card is for connection to the House Network (via 10Base-T, 100Base-TX, or 10-Base2 on some Chemstation PC s). The IP address for this card needs to either be specified or can be dynamically assigned (e.g. obtained by a DHCP server). By default, TCP/IP and NetBEUI are configured as network protocols for this cgotord. Page 1 of 7

2 The FIRST LAN-card is connected to the hub supplied with your MSD Chemstation. Only three LAN cables should be connected to this hub. It is assumed at this point that both LAN cards are installed and are functional and present as indicated below Network Adapters Panel. Configuring NIC #2 to the building LAN as given in the example below using a static IP Address. You will need to supply your DNS Servers and WINS Addresses if applicable. Alternately, DHPC may be used. The NIC #2 should go directly to the building LAN, NOT the hub for the Chemstation. Verify communications. Verify that you can communicate with other networked computers within your facility before configuring NIC # Page 2 of 7

3 LAN Adapter Card #2 Properties Example Next, configure Network Interface Card Adapter 1. NIC #1 MUST BE CONFIGURED FOR THE MSD and GC ON WINDOWS NT 4.0 Specify an IP address and enter exactly as the IP Address, Enter as Subnet Mask but do NOT enter an IP address under Default Gateway (which keeps this subnet isolated). DO NOT add entries for the DNS Servers or WINS Addresses DO NOT Enable IP Forwarding NOTE: DNS entries will be shown for NIC #1 if a DNS entry was added for NIC # Page 3 of 7

5 Once this step is completed, please connect the LAN cable from the Chemstation PC to the HUB supplied and start the CAGBootP Server Program. Bring the CAG BootP Server up from the Taskbar. The following should be observed Select Configure and ADD entry. The Hardware Mac Address should be present. Complete the entries as outlined below. Page 5 of 7

After the above steps are successful completed, it is recommended that you run the MS CONFIG Program and then Check Networking under the HELP menu item. 7 Configuration Review 6890A GC s have a Jet Direct Card Part Number J C and must use the CAGBootP Server. Follow the instructions on page 78 of the Software Installation Manual. Remove the LAN cable from the Chemstation PC to the HUB and close the CAGBootP Server Program. 6890N GC s having the LAN assembly G DO NOT use the CAGBootp Server and MUST be configured from the GC Panel as described on page 45 of the Software Installation Manual. 5973N MSD s with SmartCard Firmware Version must use the CAG BootP Server. This is described on page 78 of the Software Installation Manual. 5973N MSD s with SmartCard Firmware Version or higher, ALTERNATIVELY can have the IP Address set via the Control Panel on the MSD (LUI). This procedure is described on page 46 of the Software Installation Manual. Once this is done and proper operation is verified, the CAGBootP Server can be shut down and removed from the Startup Group on the Chemstation PC. BootP is still required for a 6890A GC. FIRMWARE. The G1701DA Product shipped with Firmware Version If you had an existing 5973N MSD on an earlier version, it can be upgraded to the current version. If you are not sure what Firmware Version you have, this can be checked in two ways: If communications are established with the MSD, use the MS CONFIG (System Configuration) Utility and select HELP. On the drop-down menu, choose Check Networking and Update MSD Firmware. An alternate way would be using the MSD Control Panel (LUI). Press Menu until Version menu appears. Press the ITEM key. Control Firmware will appear and display the current version. Cancel to Exit. When using the MS CONFIG PROGRAM (Configuration Utility), enter the IP Addresses for the MSD and GC without leading zeros. i.e (not ) When deleting an entry from either the MS CONFIG Program or CAGBootP Programs, it is a good practice to close the programs and restart them. This will ensure the configuration files are updated properly. Page 7 of 7
