Pre test Choose the correct answer: 1. High blood pressure (hypertension) is when: a. Pressure values are greater than 139/89 b. Pressure values are greater than 120/80 2. The equipment used to measure blood pressure levels: a. glucometer b. sphygmomanometer

Pre test Choose the correct answer: 3. The first step to take blood pressure is: a) Take time and verify that the monitor is operating b) Have breakfast 4. Keeping track of your blood pressure helps you: a. With writing exercise for the hand b. Evaluate with your physician if the treatment is working

Hypertension Medical term used to refer to high blood pressure It occurs when blood pumps too hard through arteries

Hypertension Blood pressure is measured in 2 parts: Systolic (top) - pressure that occurs when the heart beats Diastolic (bottom) - pressure between heartbeats, when the heart is not pumping blood High blood pressure usually has no symptoms, so it is important to regularly measure blood pressure

Classification of Blood Pressure Blood pressure is classified into the following categories: Category Systolic Diastolic Normal < de 120 < de 80 Prehypertension Hypertension Level 1 Hypertension Level > 100 >

What can I do to reduce the complications of High Blood Pressure?

Keeping Blood Pressure Controlled Maintain blood pressure controlled will help reduce the risk of a heart attack. To do this, it is important to: Know and understand the condition Follow a diet low in salt and fat Perform at least 30 minutes of moderate physical activity most days of the week

Keeping Blood Pressure Controlled Other Recommendations Lose weight if necessary (BMI <30) Comply with medications and appointments with your physician Identify blood pressure goals with your physician Monitor your blood pressure regularly

Measuring Blood Pressure Blood pressure is easy to measure and painless. It can be Measured at: Doctor's office Health Clinics At home The equipment to take the pressure may be a sphygmomanometer or blood pressure monitor

Importance of Monitoring Blood Pressure In most cases, high blood pressure does not present symptoms, so it is necessary that you regularly monitor your pressure at home. When monitoring your blood pressure, keep a record of the readings and share it with your physician during follow-up appointments. This will help you know if your treatment is working.

Monitoring Blood Pressure Recommendations for monitoring pressure: Take time to measure your blood pressure Don t measure your blood pressure in a hurry Always measure your blood pressure at the same time Do not drink coffee or smoke cigarettes for at least 30 minutes before measuring your blood pressure Go to the bathroom before you measure your blood pressure Having a full bladder can alter blood pressure readings

Monitoring Blood Pressure Recommendations for monitoring pressure: Sit for 5 minutes before taking your blood pressure Movements can temporarily raise blood pressure Take off tight clothes or loosen them (do not wear long sleeves that you have to roll up) Measure your blood pressure while sitting or lying down Use your left arm to take the blood pressure Rest your arm on a table or in a chair arm

Position to take Blood Pressure

Correct Use of the Monitor Steps to use the monitor: Check your monitor: Place the batteries and turn on the monitor Set date and time on the monitor Prepare your log and have a pen ready to write down the readings Once you're ready, extend your arm, rest your forearm on the table with the palm of your hand facing up

Correct Use of the Monitor Steps to use the monitor: Put the band around your arm Make sure that it is level with your heart Press the ON / OFF button to start The band will inflate automatically Stay relaxed, breath normally and do not speak Once it is able to measure your blood pressure, the air stops pumping and the blood pressure begins to register Note: If your monitor did not make the reading, it will pump more air to the band

Correct Use of the Monitor Steps to use the monitor: You ll hear a beep each time a heartbeat is detected A longer beep or chime indicates the reading has completed and will show you the measurement The reading will appear on the screen of your monitor with a flashing heart symbol Write the reading on the record list Take off the band and store the monitor in its case

Remember Keep a daily record of your results and the time when you measured your blood pressure Share your blood pressure log with your physician during your next visit Eat a balanced and healthy diet Continue performing physical activity Monitoring your blood pressure every day could be useful in the diagnosis and appropriate management of your condition.

Post test Choose the correct answer: 1. High blood pressure (hypertension) is when: a. Pressure values are greater than 139/89 b. Pressure values are greater than 120/80 2. The equipment used to measure blood pressure levels : a. glucometer b. sphygmomanometer
