Cav William, invalid, 18 Jan 1892, California Mary C, 19 March 1914, California A Memorial and Biographical History of counties of Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo and Ventura California Major William was considered to be one of the earliest residents of Lompoc, California. He was born in Newport, Cocke County, Tennessee, the son of William. The family moved to Moniteau County, Missouri in 1833 where they farmed. The subject of this write-up was elected to the Legislature from Putnam County, Missouri in In early 1861 he was was elected as a delegate to the Constitutional Convention in Jefferson City, Missouri. He enlisted in the military in 1862 and helped raise the Third Missouri Regiment of which he was appointed Major of the First Battalion. In 1864 he left Missouri with his wife and children arriving in Sonoma County, California September He eventually claimed 320 acres of land new San Luis Obispo. He moved to Lompoc in 1874 where he started a dairy and farmed wheat. William was one of the original directors of Lompoc for three years and in 1888 was elected Justice of the Peace. He was a Master Mason and a member of Robert Anderson Post No 66, GAR. William 's son John Bruce fought in the Civil War as a Private with Co F, 42 nd Missouri Infantry. William 's son Ulysses Grant was a California Superior Court Judge and an attorney in Santa Barbara.
