Welcome and Introductions Graham Dickson, facilitator.
Learning objectives The purpose of the webinar is to enable the learner to: Explain the content of the Lead Self domain of the LEADS framework. Understand the essential contribution of selfleadership to his or her effectiveness as a health care leader. Analyze and assess his or her strengths and limitations in self-leadership, and set direction for enhancement.
Key Resources Dickson, G. & Tholl, B. (2014). Bringing Leadership to life in health: LEADS in a Caring Environment. London: Springer (Chapter 5). Mohapel, P. (2011). Lead Self Research Report. PDF Available through Canadian College of Health Leaders. Mohapel, P. (2011). Lead Self Executive Summary. Available Video clip. Personal purpose: the Alfred Nobel Story. (to be provided).
Lead Self First domain of the LEADS in a Caring Environment capabilities framework. It focuses on self-leadership knowing why we are leading, what makes us successful or not, and using that knowledge for personal growth.
Question: Have you heard of the LEADS framework? Is it used in your organization?
But first...what is LEADS? Five domains 4 capabilities per domain Total 20 capabilities Behavioural descriptors at four levels Develop Coalitions Lead Self Systems Transforma tion Achieve Results Engage Others

Evidence-based, by health for health capabilities framework Common leadership language Endorsed by many health organizations across Canada Why LEADS?
Why Lead Self? Lead Self is about striving to know who you are (Being) and understanding your level of commitment to others (Caring), so as to be able to explain to yourself and others why what you are Doing will motivate others.
Confucius If I feel in my heart that I am wrong, I must stand in fear, even though my opponent is the least formidable of men. But if my own heart tells me I am right, I shall go forward, even against thousands and ten thousands.
Lead Self Self- Motivated leaders. Are Self Aware Manage Themselves Demonstrate Character Develop Themselves
Question: How would you rate your knowledge of the research about leadership, especially as it pertains to lead self?
Leaders are aware of their own assumptions, values, principles, strengths and limitations Are Self Aware
Self-awareness in action In the early 2000s, we were going through some much needed, but highly unpopular, redesigns of the healthcare system. These included downgrading and consolidating services from rural/remote centres and developing new levels of care and housing for seniors. This was met with angst, hostility, and political opportunism. One of the members of the Senior Leadership Team was constantly under personal attack in her small, rural community. Instead of reacting and becoming defensive, she took time to deeply reflect on her personal values around her role as a health care provider. Reconnecting with her personal sense of service, she was able to reframe the crisis as an opportunity to embrace and positively impact the community. How she dealt with that crisis, by articulating and living by her values and principles, had a positive impact on the community.
When you observe a leader with good selfawareness, what does it look like, sound like, and feel like to you? Question:
They take responsibility for their own performance and health. Manage Themselves
Manage Themselves Emotionally intelligent leaders are able to anticipate their emotional reactions and then act preemptively to control or guide them. Marie Curie Nelson Mandela
Demonstrate Character Leaders model qualities such as honesty, integrity, resilience and confidence.
The importance of character Bernard Bass, the father of transformational leadership: This is not to deny that evil people can bring about good things or that good people can lead the way to moral ruin. Rather, leadership provides a moral compass and, over the long term, both personal development and the common good are best served by a moral compass that reads true. Character can and should be developed, like any other leadership attribute.
Reflection: When in the past three months has your character been tested? How did you respond?
Develop Self The leader actively pursues opportunities and challenges for personal learning, character building, and growth. Leaders aren t born, they are made. And they are made just like anything else, through hard work. And that s the price which all of us must pay to achieve any goal that is worthwhile Vince Lombardi
Like going to the gym... Effective leaders know that self development is a life-long process, where the right attitude is as important as the right skill sets.
Activity Review the four capabilities of Lead Self: Are self-aware Manage self Demonstrate character Develop self Rate yourself on the four capabilities of the Lead self domain. What evidence would you use for that rating?
Question: How would you rate your knowledge of the research about leadership, especially as it pertains to lead self?
Questions?
Evaluation We d like to hear your feedback about what we are doing well and where we can improve. Please complete the Webinar Evaluation at:
