He was a leader in the ecumenical movement in Europe and one of the most influential theological advisors at the Second Vatican Council. In this book, Groppe analyzes Congar s theology of the Holy Spirit. She systematizes his pneumatology and identifies its primary contribution. Congar, she argues, advanced Roman Catholic pneumatology through his elaboration of a theology of the Holy Spirit that is at once a theological anthropology and a theology of the church. The early twentieth-century Roman Catholic pneumatology that Congar inherited consisted primarily of a spiritual anthropology a theology of the Spirit s indwelling of the human person while giving little or no attention to the theology of the Holy Spirit within the discipline of ecclesiology. Congar saw this divorce of spiritual anthropology and ecclesiology as a betrayal of Christianity s biblical and patristic heritage and of his Thomistic tradition. His own theology reintegrates a theology of the Spirit s indwelling of the human person with an account of the Spirit as co-institutor and life principle of the church, and his approach has significant implications for contemporary discussions in the areas of ecclesiology, theological anthropology, sacramental theology, ecumenism, and spirituality. The book includes extensive notes and bibliography and is important both as an introduction to Congar and a contribution to a contemporary theology of the Holy Spirit. Page 1 of 6

The Holy Spirit Gregory A. Beeley in Gregory of Nazianzus on the Trinity and the Knowledge of God: In Your Light We Shall See Light Published in print: 2008 Published Online: September 2008 ISBN: eisbn: acprof:oso/ The central chapter of the book evaluates Gregory's distinctive doctrine of the Holy Spirit and the Spirit's role in the work of Christian theology, focusing on the soteriological character of Gregory's Pneumatology in distinction from that of his Christology. It traces the development of Gregory's doctrine of the Spirit from his early episcopal sermons to the climax of his work in Constantinople and provides a new reading of the structure and argumentation of his monumental Oration 31 On the Holy Spirit, which is aimed at both the Eunomians and Pneumatomachians. At the heart of the matter is Gregory's account of the full divinity of the Spirit in light of the Bible's silence at the literal level an argument that involves tracing the sequence of Trinitarian revelation through the covenants and the age of the Church, the direct proof of the Spirit's divinity from baptismal divinization, and Gregory's subsequent exegesis of the Spirit according to the Spirit. In conclusion, the chapter identifies the Spirit's central epistemic function for all theology and Gregory's literary rhetoric of piety, which frames and unifies the Theological Orations as a series. The Holy Spirit and the Inner Life of the Trinity Luigi Gioia in The Theological Epistemology of Augustine's De Trinitate Published in print: 2008 Published Online: January 2009 ISBN: eisbn: acprof:oso/ The analysis of the doctrine of the Holy Spirit establishes its Christological and soteriological grounds first and compares them with the sections of the treatise where his inner Trinitarian origin, identity, and properties are dealt with more systematically. The Holy Spirit is gift. In the case of the Holy Spirit, the notion of gift acquires a crucial connotation: not only does it evoke the fact that the Holy Spirit is given, but also that he is freely given and at the same time that he freely gives himself. If freedom is one of the defining features of a gift, the Holy Spirit Page 2 of 6

fulfils this condition in the highest conceivable degree. Then, the fact that Scripture presents the Holy Spirit as belonging to the Father and to the Son, as being the Spirit of the Father and of the Son, teaches us that the Holy Spirit is the common charity through which Father and Son love each other. The answer to the question of how crucial is the doctrine of the filioque to Augustine's Trinitarian theology is just as crucial as the understanding of inner Trinitarian life as life of love. The Person of the Holy Spirit Gilles Emery Op in The Trinitarian Theology of Saint Thomas Aquinas Published in print: 2010 Published Online: October 2011 ISBN: eisbn: acprof:oso/ This chapter focuses on questions of the Holy Spirit in the Summa. One must appreciate that the Spirit is present within the treatise from the first question to the last. Questions 36 38, dedicated to the person of the Holy Spirit, taken in a special way, are a narrower examination of his personal property. To grasp what Thomas is aiming at, one has to read the questions in the context of the Trinitarian treatise. The central aim of this enquiry is to elucidate what belongs eternally to the Holy Spirit, in the immanence of the Trinity, but to do so in a way that provides the foundation for understanding his action in creation and salvation. Here perhaps more than elsewhere, theology is closely linked to the economy, because the Spirit is at the source of Christian life and of ecclesial unity. The study of the Holy Spirit will show that the ground of Christian existence, and the bond of believers, lives in the Charity who proceeds from the Father and the Son. As with the Father and the Son, the way of tackling the investigation into the Holy Spirit is to consider the orientation of the names which we give to him. So it comes down to disclosing the personal property of the Holy Spirit as it is expressed through the names which genuinely address him. Spirit of God, Spirit of Christ: The Trinitarian Foundations of Congar's Pneumatology Elizabeth Teresa Groppe in Yves Congar's Theology of the Holy Spirit Published in print: 2004 Published Online: July 2005 ISBN: eisbn: Page 3 of 6

This chapter presents the trinitarian theology that serves as the overarching framework for Congar s theology of the Holy Spirit. Congar s approach is notable for his emphasis on the inseparability and nonduality of the missions of the Word and the Spirit and his advocacy of a pneumatological Christology. This shapes his approach to the debated issues of the Filioque and the meaning of the traditional affirmation of the personhood of the Holy Spirit. Dialogue: Restoring particularity through the Holy Spirit Tom Greggs in Barth, Origen, and Universal Salvation: Restoring Particularity Published in print: 2009 Published Online: September 2009 ISBN: eisbn: acprof:oso/ The logic of universalism could at a superficial level lead one to ask why there is any need for faith. This chapter proposes a way through this seeming contradiction by considering the problem from the perspective of pneumatology. This helps to avoid speaking of salvation in the simple binary opposition of saved-damned. The Spirit allows for the continued particularity of the Christian and the non-christian while retaining the possibility of universal salvation. Through the establishment of the church and the Christian by the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, the Christian and the non-christian are enabled to be united in Christ precisely as Christian and non-christian. The Spirit allows for human and Christian particularity without limiting God's work of salvation. The Spirit ever deepens God's love for humanity in the church and the individual lives of Christians without in any way detracting from the love of God for all creation. Reason, Will, and the Graces of Sanctification and Justification Nigel Voak in Richard Hooker and Reformed Theology: A Study of Reason, Will, and Grace Published in print: 2003 Published Online: January 2005 ISBN: eisbn: Taking a complementary approach to ch. 3, this chapter examines the reason and the will of (elect) Christians, who are in receipt of sanctifying (and justifying) grace. Hooker s views on justification are discussed initially, where it is argued that although throughout his life he was a firm Page 4 of 6

advocate of forensic theory, he moved in the Lawes and his late writings to the position that justification can be lost, and then subsequently regained with the aid of repentance, and that in this context it makes sense to speak of a person congruously meriting justification. This is then allied to his views on sanctification, involving a discussion of the three theological virtues, mortal and venial sin, and supererogation, all of which are again contrasted with the approach of contemporary Reformed theology. Then moves on to look at Hooker s views on the interaction between Christians and the Holy Spirit, principally through the authentication and interpretation of Holy Scripture, and knowledge of election, all of which say a good deal about his theological development. This makes an excellent springboard for a final analysis of religious authority, where it is argued that Hooker, as has traditionally been claimed, upheld the authority of scripture, reason, and tradition, in that order, contrary to the Reformed, and more generally Protestant, doctrine of sola scriptura. The Present work of God: Subjectivity and the Spirit (Barth) Tom Greggs in Barth, Origen, and Universal Salvation: Restoring Particularity Published in print: 2009 Published Online: September 2009 ISBN: eisbn: acprof:oso/ This chapter is concerned with the economy of the Holy Spirit. It seeks to redress the accusation (connected to the accusation of universalism) of Christomonism in Barth. It argues that for Barth's theology the economy of the Holy Spirit is the operation of God which allows for the place of faith and Christian existence within a universalist soteriology based strongly on the objective work of Christ: the Spirit allows this objective reality to reach the community and the individual. The chapter discusses the temporal remit of the Spirit; the role of the Spirit in the reception of revelation; the operation of the Spirit in establishing Christian particularity and identity; Barth's concept of correspondence (Entsprechung); the Spirit's work in establishing human identity and particularity; and the role of the Spirit in eschatology. The Theological Epistemology of Augustine's De Trinitate Luigi Gioia Published in print: 2008 Published Online: January 2009 ISBN: eisbn: Item type: book acprof:oso/ Page 5 of 6

The book provides a fresh description and analysis of Augustine's monumental treatise, De Trinitate, working on a supposition of its unity and its coherence from structural, rhetorical, and theological points of view. The main arguments of the treatise are reviewed first: an examination of Scripture and the mystery of the Trinity; a discussion of Arian logical and ontological categories; a comparison between the process of knowledge and formal aspects of the confession of the mystery of the Trinity; an account of the so called psychological analogies. These topics hold a predominantly instructive or polemical function. The unity and the coherence of the treatise become apparent especially when its description focuses on a truly theological understanding of the knowledge of God: Augustine aims at leading the reader to the vision and enjoyment of God the Trinity, in whose image we are created. This mystagogical aspect of the rhetoric of De Trinitate is unfolded through Christology, soteriology, the doctrine of the Holy Spirit, and the doctrine of revelation. At the same time, from the vantage point of love, Augustine detects and powerfully depicts the epistemological consequences of human sinfulness, thus unmasking the fundamental deficiency of received theories of knowledge. Only love restores knowledge and enables phiolosophers to yield to the injunction which resumes philosophical enterprise as a whole, namely know thyself. Whitsun Nicholas Lossky in Lancelot Andrewes, the Preacher ( ): The Origins of the Mystical Theology of the Church of England Published in print: 1991 Published Online: September 2011 ISBN: eisbn: acprof:oso/ This chapter discusses the fifteen Whitsun sermons of Andrewes which were prepared during the Jacobean period and Andrewes's bishopric. These Whitsun sermons were preached during 1606 to 1621, with two years off, and the last sermon was never delivered. Like the Nativity and Resurrection sermons, the Whitsun sermons also display a sense of unity. Andrewes treated the subject of Whitsun in a delicate manner. For him, it was the period of giving back to the Holy Spirit His true place amidst the tendency of minimizing the role of the third Person of the Holy Trinity in the economy of salvation dominated by a hypertrophied Christocentrism.
