Its contents supplement or supersede corresponding information found in the Oracle8i Installation Guide (64 Bit) for SGI IRIX. The following topics are included in this document: Hardware Requirements Operating System Requirements Installation Issues and Restrictions Product Notes Changes to Appendix A of the Oracle8i Installation Guide Other Information Resources Hardware Requirements The following hardware is required to install Oracle8i Release 2 (8.1.6) on SGI IRIX systems: Hardware Memory Swap Space CD-ROM Device Requirements A minimum of 256 MB RAM is required to install Oracle8i products. Oracle8i Client products require 64 MB of RAM. Twice the amount of RAM or at least 400 MB, whichever is greater, is recommended for most systems. A CD-ROM drive supported by SGI IRIX is required. 2 Disk Space Requirements Disk space requirements differ depending on which products you choose to install from the Oracle8i Release 2 (8.1.6). See the Oracle8i Installation Guide (64 Bit) for SGI IRIX for complete details. Disk space requirements do not account for the size of your database. A production Oracle database server supporting many users requires significantly greater disk space and memory. 3 Operating System Requirements To install Oracle8i products included with this release, your SGI IRIX system must meet the operating system requirements listed the following table: OS Software Operating System Operating System Patches Window Manager Required Executables Requirements IRIX 6.5.x (where x is 2 or later) with version (or later) of the IRIS Development Option Database Accelerator 3.0, for Origin 200 and 2000 and Challenge R4400 and R10000, running IRIX 6.5. Use the latest kernel patch from SGI IRIX. X-windows must be installed on the system from where the Installer is run. Character mode installations are not supported for Release 2 (8.1.6). See Chapter 3 of the Oracle8i Installation Guide for SGI IRIX for information on non-interactive installation. The following executables must be present: /bin/ar,/bin/ld,/bin/nm & /sbin/make Other Software Requirements The following table lists installation restrictions and requirements for some Oracle8i products: Product Name Pro*C/C++, Pro*FORTRAN, Oracle Data Migration Assistant, Oracle Universal Installer, Oracle JServer, Oracle SSL Protocol, Restrictions and Requirements Requires MIPSpro C compiler or later. Note: To compile C source files containing multi-byte character references, you must use version 7.3 of the MIPSpro C compiler. Requires MIPSpro FORTRAN compiler or later. An Oracle database must be at least Release to be upgraded by ODMA. Two terminal windows should remain open while using the Installer. See the Java README on the Product CD-ROM for restrictions and requirements. Requires SSL 3.0 or later. All network products require the underlying software and operating system libraries for the supported network. The network software must be installed and running before the Net8 products are installed. 3

4 Authentication Protocols Supported by the Advanced Networking Option The following table lists installation requirements for the authentication protocols supported by the Advanced Networking Option. Authentication Method Kerberos Identix Requirements Kerberos Version 5 Release 1.0 or higher. Oracle Biometrix release or higher or SecurID card from Security Dynamics. Installation Issues and Restrictions The following issues and restrictions can affect the installation of Oracle8i on SGI IRIX. Resizing Oracle Universal Installer Windows Do not resize Oracle Universal Installer windows. If you resize Installer windows, the information in the windows is not refreshed accurately. Using Hummingbird Exceed If you are using Hummingbird s Exceed X windows software while installing and using Oracle8i, set the window manager to run in "Native" mode so that Microsoft Windows functions as the window manager. See your Exceed documentation for instructions on configuring the window manager. New ORACLE_HOME Oracle Corporation recommends that you install Oracle8i Release 2 (8.1.6) products into a new $ORACLE_HOME directory. Do not install Oracle8i Release 2 (8.1.6) into an $ORACLE_HOME directory that already contains Oracle products. If you must install Oracle8i Release 2 (8.1.6) into an $ORACLE_HOME directory that contains products, remove the products with Oracle Universal Installer before beginning the new installation. If you install Oracle8i Release 2 (8.1.6) into an $ORACLE_HOME directory containing products, the following products might remain in the $ORACLE_HOME directory and appear in the inventory: SQL*Plus, Oracle Call Interface, Oracle intermedia Client Option, Development Tools,

5 In addition to these products, the version of the JDBC Thin Driver and JDBC/OCI Driver for JDK are also listed. Do not remove version products that remain after the upgrade to Release 2 (8.1.6). Doing so will remove the versions of these products. Backing Up the root.sh Script If you install another product category, such as Oracle8i Management Infrastructure, after the successful installation of Oracle8i Server into the same $ORACLE_HOME directory, Oracle Universal Installer deletes the content of the root.sh script during installation. Before beginning the installation, backup the root.sh script: $ cp root.sh root.sh.save If you require the original root.sh script, you can recover it from the root.sh.save file. Non-Interactive Installation Be aware of the following issues when running the Oracle Universal Installer in non-interactive mode. Character Mode Installation can no longer be performed using character mode. However, you can configure Oracle Universal Installer to perform a non-interactive installation of Oracle products. You can run the Installer in a non-interactive mode directly from your system s X-windows console or from an X-terminal or PC X-terminal on a remote system. For more information on the non-interactive installation of Oracle products, see "Non-Interactive Installation and Configuration" in Chapter 3 of the Oracle8i Installation Guide (64 Bit) for SGI IRIX. Response Files The following response files listed in "Non-Interactive Installation and Configuration" in Chapter 3 of the Oracle8i Installation Guide (64 Bit) for SGI IRIX are not available on the Oracle8i Release 2 (8.1.6) CD-ROM: omioms.rsp omioid.rsp omicustom.rsp emca.rsp You do not need these files to install Oracle8i Release 2 (8.1.6), 64 Bit on SGI IRIX systems. 5

6 Silent Installation and Net8 Configuration Assistant If you perform a Minimal installation type of Oracle8i Enterprise Edition in silent mode, Net8 Configuration Assistant fails to configure your system at the end of the installation. After the installation, use the Net8 Configuration Assistant to complete Net8 configuration by executing netca from the $ORACLE_HOME directory. For instructions on running the Net8 Configuration Assistant in silent mode, see "Non-Interactive Installation and Configuration" in Chapter 3 of the Oracle8i Installation Guide (64 Bit) for SGI IRIX. Note: You can start the Net8 Configuration Assistant after installation by entering the netca command. For more detailed configuration of Net8, use the Net8 Assistant by entering the netasst command. See the Net8 Administrator s Guide for more information on configuring Net8. First Time Installation in Silent Mode To perform the first installation of Oracle products on a system with Oracle Universal Installer running in silent mode, you must manually create the orainst.loc file. This file specifies the directory where the Installer creates the inventory of Oracle products installed on the system. Before creating this file, read and complete the tasks detailed in Chapter 1 and Chapter 2 of the Oracle8i Installation Guide (64 Bit) for SGI IRIX. To create the orainst.loc file: 1. Log in as the root user: $ su 2. If it does not already exist on your system, you must create the /var/opt/oracle directory: # mkdir /var/opt/oracle 3. Change to the /var/opt/oracle directory: # cd /var/opt/oracle 4. Using a text editor, create a file called orainst.loc with the following two lines of content: inventory_loc=inventory_directory inst_group= Set inventory_loc to ORACLE_BASE/oraInventory. For example, if ORACLE_BASE is /u01/app/oracle, then inventory_directory should be /u01/app/oracle/orainventory. Include, but do not set, inst_group= on the second line. 6

7 Java Runtime Environment (JRE) The JRE shipped with Oracle8i is used by Oracle Java applications such as Oracle Universal Installer, and is the only one supported to run with these applications. Only modify this JRE using a patch provided by Oracle Support Services. The Installer creates the orainventory directory the first time it is run. The inventory can contain multiple versions of the JRE, each of which can be used by one or more products or releases. The orainventory directory keeps an inventory of products installed on your system as well as other installation information. The location of the orainventory directory is defined in the /var/opt/oracle/orainst.loc file. Products in an $ORACLE_HOME directory access the JRE through a symbolic link in $ORACLE_HOME/JRE to the actual location of a JRE within the inventory. Only modify the symbolic link using a patch provided by Oracle Support Services. Product Notes The following issues can affect the installation of Oracle8i products. Oracle8i Server The following sections describe Oracle8i Server installation issues. Re-installing If you re-install Oracle8i Server into an $ORACLE_HOME directory where Oracle8i Server Release is already installed, you must also re-install any product options, such as Oracle Partitioning, that were enabled before you began the re-installation. Oracle Database Configuration Assistant During a Custom installation of Oracle8i Server, if you do not choose to create a database when prompted by Oracle Universal Installer, Oracle Database Configuration Assistant appears in the window started by the Optional Configuration Tools button. This button appears at the end of the installation. However, you cannot run Oracle Database Configuration Assistant from this window (Bug ). Run Oracle Database Configuration Assistant from the $ORACLE_HOME directory using the dbassist command. Oracle Advanced Security If you use the Custom installation type of Oracle8i Enterprise Edition to install Oracle Advanced Security into an existing $ORACLE_HOME directory that already contains Oracle8i Enterprise Edition, you must install Oracle Advanced Security separately from any other product options, such as Oracle Partitioning. Unless you install additional product options separately from Oracle Advanced Security, installation fails. 7

8 Oracle Internet Directory Several products included with Oracle8i Release 2 (8.1.6) are directory-enabled and can take advantage of an LDAP version 3 directory server such as Oracle Internet Directory. Oracle8i Release 2 (8.1.6) includes a restricted use version of Oracle Internet Directory version Bit for SGI IRIX that may be used only in conjunction with Oracle directory-enabled components and products such as Net8, Oracle Advanced Security, Oracle8i Server, and all future directory-enabled Oracle products. Oracle corporation recommends that you install Oracle Internet Directory on a system that does not already have an Oracle8i database. Unless it detects an existing database in the $ORACLE_HOME directory where it installs Oracle Internet Directory, Oracle Universal Installer automatically installs the necessary software and creates the datafiles for an Oracle version database. This database should only be used to store Oracle Internet Directory information. Oracle JServer The following sections describe Oracle8i JServer installation issues. De-installation You cannot de-install Oracle JServer separately from other products installed with Oracle8i Release 2 (8.1.6). De-installing Oracle JServer causes Oracle Universal Installer to remove Oracle8i Server, and other products dependent on Oracle JServer, from your system. Oracle Database Configuration Assistant When you use Oracle Database Configuration Assistant to create a Custom database that includes Oracle JServer, be aware that it can take over an hour to finish loading Oracle JServer into the database depending on your system s hardware configuration. Net8 Configuration Assistant In a Typical, silent installation of Oracle8i Release 2 (8.1.6), Net8 Configuration Assistant does not configure an Internet Inter-ORB Protocol (IIOP) listening end point to provide access to Oracle JServer. After installation, start the Net8 Configuration Assistant from the command line and configure an IIOP end point for the listener called LISTENER. For more information, see the Net8 Administrator s Guide. Very Large Files Oracle8i includes native support for files greater than 2 GB in both 32-bit and 64-bit releases. Check your shell to determine whether it imposes a limit: To check shell limits, enter ulimit -Sa. To check hard limits, enter ulimit -Ha. For example, if file (blocks) is set to , the maximum size of a file which you can create is 1 GB. 8

9 intermedia Text The ctxhx filter provided by Inso Corporation is not supported in this release. Changes to Appendix A of the Oracle8i Installation Guide This section includes information updated from Appendix A, "Oracle8i Products" of the Oracle8i Installation Guide (64 Bit) for SGI IRIX. The following table lists version numbers of products included in Oracle8i Release 2 (8.1.6): Oracle Help for Java (part of Assistant Common Files) SMUI (part of Assistant Common Files) Oracle Application Server Listener Oracle Developer Server Forms Manager 1.1 Oracle Distributed Access Manager 1.0 Beta Oracle Spatial Index Advisor 2.1 Beta Be aware of the following updates to the first three tables of Appendix A: The Oracle Management Server installation type includes Oracle Spatial Index Advisor but not Oracle Distributed Access Manager. The Oracle Internet Directory installation type does not include the DBA Management Pack. Oracle Advanced Security, not Oracle Enterprise Manager, includes Oracle Enterprise Login Assistant. Oracle Parallel Server Manager, not Oracle Parallel Server Management, is a part of the Oracle Enterprise Manager Integrated Applications. SQL*Plus Worksheet is a part of the Oracle DBA Management Pack. 9
