2 Ask the class the questions prior to the respective slides Answer/Text: Rabies is a very serious disease that can be transferred between animals and humans. This is called a zoonotic disease. Rabies is caused a rhabdovirus (Greek rhabdos = rod), a bullet-shaped RNA virus. Rabies belongs to the genus Lyssa, which means madness in Greek. Answer/Text: The virus is sensitive and can quickly become inactivated by disinfectants including formalin and soap, and by heat and sunlight, but it is stable at low temperatures. Most importantly, if it is not treated it is fatal. Ask the class the questions prior to the respective slides. 3 Text: Not all dogs have rabies, but any dog bite should be treated by a doctor as a threat for rabies. Note taking. Question; What is the percentage of cases caused by a dog bite? Answer: 99% of cases are caused by a dog bite Text: Answer/Text: Rabies is transmitted through the SALIVA (spit) of an infected dog. The saliva needs to enter the body through an open wound (cuts etc.) to transmit the disease. Once inside the body, the rabies virus reaches the nerve cells of a human or animal body and multiples. Then the virus travels up the through the central nervous system 1cm every day and will reach the brain and salivary glands. Once rabies reaches the brain, it is too late and the virus will lead to death. Note taking. Question; In which bodily fluid does the rabies virus live?

4 Text: Symptoms of rabies can take anywhere from 4 days to 6 months to develop. The initial symptoms often cannot be noticed, for example, flu-like symptoms, depression, vomiting, fever, lack of appetite and headache. These can be easily mistaken for other types of infection. Furious rabies, which occurs in 4 out of 5 cases; Aggressive behaviours and biting Hallucination and delusions where people see or hear things that are not real Very high temperature and sweating Hydrophobia (scared of water) Salivating a lot because of pain when swallowing Insomnia (unable to sleep) Paralytic rabies; Muscle weakness, Loss of sensation Paralysis (unable to move) In both cases, a person will fall into a coma and die from heart or lung failure. It is very important to get TREATMENT immediately after a dog bite. Review video, Note taking, discussion. Question: How does watching these videos make you feel? Review Mission Rabies video (2 minutes) Text: Dogs do not have control over their actions when the virus takes over and they become dangerous to people and other dogs. Extension question (answer Culling - see Rabies overview) Further questioning would be to explain why this was thought to be the best way to control rabies. Note taking.
