2 The Prophet (saw) was once asked: What is Qurbani? He (saw) replied: It is the sunnah of your father Ibrahim (as). For every hair of the Qurbani, you receive a reward from Allah (swt). [Tirmidhi] The practice of sacrifice can be traced back to the Prophet Ibrahim (as) who dreamt that Allah (swt) ordered him to sacrifice his son, Ismail (as). In his devotion to Allah (swt), Ibrahim (as) agreed to perform the sacrifice. Upon being told of his father s dream, Ismail (as) himself even showed willingness to comply for the sake of Allah (swt). However, when Ibrahim (as) went to carry out the sacrifice, Allah (swt) intervened and sent a ram in Ismail s (as) place. The continued act of sacrifice acts as a reminder of Ibrahim s (as) and Ismail s (as) obedience to Allah (swt). 2

4 When is Qurbani carried out? The days of Qurbani are the 10th, 11th and 12th of the Islamic month of Dhul Hijjah. The first day, on the 10th, which marks the start of Eid al-adha, is better than the second day, and the second day is better than the last day. The Prophet (saw) said: The first thing that we do on the day of Eid is to perform the prayers. Then we go home and carry out our Qurbani. Thus whoever does those acts has conformed to our sunnah. And for those who slaughtered before it, then the meat is for the family members and not as an act of Qurbani. [Bukhari] You can order your Qurbani up until the end of the day of Eid al-adha. 5 ughly ONLY 29 Who has to give Qurbani? All Muslim adults who are sane and eligible to pay Zakat must make the sacrifice. Which animals can be sacrificed? The animals to be slaughtered must be a goat, sheep, cattle (cow, ox, water buffalo) or camel. All Qurbani animals must be in good health and they must be sacrificed in the Islamic way. Can I choose which animal to sacrifice? The availability of animals and local preferences determine which animals are slaughtered so it is not possible to specify. 5

6 What happens to the meat? The fresh, nutritious meat is distributed to poor and needy people as quickly as possible. This allows them to cook a healthy and beneficial meal for their family to enjoy on the days of Eid. Can I make a Qurbani sacrifice on behalf of someone else? Yes! A sacrifice can be made on behalf of someone else, in the name of a deceased Muslim, or in the name of the Prophet (saw). However, this must be in addition to your own Qurbani. Should I do anything special in the first 10 days of Dhul Hijjah? Dhul Hijjah is a very sacred month in the Islamic calendar. Hajj takes place on the 8th, 9th and 10th of the month, and the Day of Arafat (on which a verse of the Holy Qur an, Al Maa idah 5:3, was revealed explaining that the religion had been perfected) is the 9th. Eid al-adha begins on the 10th day and ends at sunset on the 12th. The first 10 days of this month are incredibly blessed, and Muslims often fast, spend more time in prayer and in reading the Holy Qur an, and give more in charity during this time. In the 10 days before Eid al-adha you should not cut your hair or nails, nor remove parts of the skin. 6
