1 Fire prevention in your workplace consists of four steps: Implement a program that includes preparation, prevention, and recognition of fire hazards. Make sure you practice proper handling of combustible and flammable material. Maintain safe housekeeping practices that reduce the risk of fire danger. Always keep adequate and appropriate fire suppression equipment in your work area to extinguish fire in its incipient stages. General Safety Measures The following are general safety measures in establishing and maintaining fire protection in the workplace: Never pile or lay material in a way that it covers or blocks access to firefighting equipment. Never let unnecessary combustible materials get accumulated in any part of your work area. Regularly dispose of combustible debris and scrap from your work area. Use only approved containers and tanks for storage, handling, and transport of combustible and flammable liquid. Always perform evaluation procedures before performing operations that present fire hazards like welding.
2 Where the fire alarm boxes are in your area. They should be well marked and easy to access. Where the exit routes are in your area. The exits and directional signs will help guide you out of the building to safety. Where the extinguishers are located. The extinguishers must be mounted in a designated location, well-marked and easy to access. The procedures to follow in the event of a fire. What steps to follow, where to go and how to use a fire extinguisher if needed. Procedures For Fire Emergency Immediately raise an alarm either by pulling the handle on the nearest Pull Station or by Verbally (shout fire ) informing everyone in the building and call the Fire Service at 990. If the fire is small, heavy smoke is NOT present and you have an exit available to you for evacuation purposes, you can use the nearest appropriate extinguisher following the P-A-S-S procedure. Otherwise leave the area by the nearest exit. Do not use an elevator; use the stairs to change floors. If you are disabled and not able to exit the building, go to the nearest safe area and wait for rescue. If the fire is large or the area is filled with heavy smoke (just as deadly as the fire), pull the handle on the nearest Pull Station, evacuate the building and call 990 from safe area.
3 Fire Equipment Safety Measures Fire extinguishers are the most commonly used fire suppression device. You may also add fire hose reel to your emergency box/glass in the workplace. Here are guidelines you must follow in using fire equipment: Inspect and maintain firefighting equipment regularly. Place an adequate number of firefighting equipment in plain view in your work areas. When appropriate, label the location of each one and make sure it is properly rated. Provide employees with proper training in fire prevention and protection. Prohibit smoking at or around work areas where fire hazards are present. Put up signs, saying NO SMOKING or OPEN FLAMES. Configure an alarm system that consists of both visual and audible signals (bells, sirens, blinking lights). If you have a fire extinguisher in your work area, your employer is required to provide training on its use. Hands-on-training is available Trinidad & Tobago Fire Service.
4 A portable fire extinguisher is a "first aid" device and is very effective when used while the fire is small. The use of fire extinguisher that matches the class of fire, by a person who is well trained, can save both lives and property. Portable fire extinguishers must be installed in workplaces regardless of other firefighting measures. The successful performance of a fire extinguisher in a fire situation largely depends on its proper selection, inspection, maintenance, and distribution. There are four different types of fires: Most fire extinguishers are classified as ABC which can be used on the three common types of fires. Note that most extinguishers are limited and most small extinguishers will discharge their contents within 8-15 seconds.
5 Familiarize yourself with your surrounding and know your companies Evacuation Plan and participate in their Evacuation Drills. In fire emergencies do not stop to remove your personal items. Do not run. Do not use the Elevators. Do not open doors if they are hot to the touch. Once outside do not reenter the building.
