1 News Release July 4, 2011 Takata launches sale of Japan s first ISOFIX child seat which meets new standards - suitable for newborns through to toddlers ~ takata04 i fix to be launched commercially from July 2011 ~ Tokyo, July 4, Takata Corporation ( Takata ), a leading global supplier of automotive safety systems such as seat belts, airbags and child seats, has announced the commercial launch of takata04- i fix the first ISOFIX* child seat suitable for newborns through to toddlers which meets new standards (EC standards**). The product will be available from July Until now Takata has offered ISOFIX child seats as a factory option through car dealers. Now, reflecting the new standards that will be adopted from July 1, 2012, and based on the technology cultivated through the development and manufacture of its previous ISOFIX products, Takata will offer the new ISOFIX standard takata 04- i fix through baby product stores, mass retailers and auto product stores nationwide. Incorrect fitting of child seats is common around the globe, and a joint investigation conducted by the National Police Agency and JAF (Japan Automobile Federation) found that 63.5% of all child seats are fitted incorrectly in Japan. A large percentage of incorrect fitting is the result of insufficient tightening of the vehicle seat belt. ISOFIX is a system which works to prevent incorrect fitting of child seats, using a fitment method which differs from the traditional system of securing the child seat with the vehicle seat belt. Instead it directly fixes the child seat in place using special connectors fitted to the vehicle and the child seat. Takata has been involved in the global standardization of the ISOFIX system since its early stages, and launched the development of its own ISOFIX standard child seats in Since then Takata has manufactured more than 50,000 ISOFIX products. Takata hopes to contribute to the reduction of incorrect child seat fitting and the expansion of child seat usage in Japan through the popularization of ISOFIX child seats. 2 * ISOFIX child seats Child seats which use a fixed mounting system that meets ISO standards which aim to ensure child restraint systems are correctly installed, improves compatibility with automobiles and forms a global standard. ISOFIX child seats use a fitment method that differs from the traditional system of securing the child seat with the vehicle seat belt. Instead it directly fixes the child seat in place using special connectors fitted to the vehicle and the child seat, significantly reducing the chance of incorrect installation. In October 2006, revisions were made to Japan s vehicle safety standards. Revisions included new child seat safety standards through the adoption of the ECER44/04 European standards (or EC standards for short). Countries that have adopted EC standards have seen an improvement in child seat safety. The adoption of EC standards has resulted in more widespread use of ISOFIX child seats in Japan, which were previously only approved in a limited number of vehicles in the country.
