1 Lab 6: Google Maps Android API v2 One of the defining features of mobile phones is their portability. It's not surprising that some of the most enticing APIs are those that enable you to find, contextualize, and map physical locations. Using the external Maps library included as part of the Google API package, you can create map-based Activities using Google Maps as a user interface element. You have full access to the map, which enables you to control display settings, alter the zoom level, and pan to different locations. Using Overlays you can annotate maps and handle user input. Professional Android 4 Application Development In this hands-on lab we are going create a basic Google Maps Android API v2 App. Note: You will not be able to fully test your Google Maps Android API v2 App using an Android emulator. It's not supported except for mock locations. If you do not have a device, get a device or find a partner. 1) Setup Google Play services SDK in Eclipse Open up the SDK Manager, scroll to the bottom, expand Extras ; select, accept, and download Google Play Services. 2 After Google Play Services is installed, copy the library project at: <android-sdk>/extras/google/google_play_services/libproject/google-play-services_lib/ to the location where you maintain your Android app projects. With the Eclipse ADT you can do this by importing the library project into your workspace: Import->Project->Android->Existing Android Code into Workspace. Select Copy projects into workspace. 3 1) Create an Android project Return to Eclipse and create an Android project for this Maps tutorial. Under project properties, update your build target to Google APIs as follows. Note: Google APIs includes what you need from Android. Jay Urbain, Ph.D. 3

4 Modify your project build path to include your google-play-service-lib.jar located under the bin directory of your google-play-service-lib project. Make sure the Google APIs Android matches what you ve selected for your build target above and that it is compatible with your target SDK in your AndroidManifest.xml. Jay Urbain, Ph.D. 4

5 In your newly created project, navigate to your MainActivity and record the package name: Jay Urbain, Ph.D. 5

6 2) SHA1 certificate fingerprint and signing your applications All Android applications must be signed with a digital certificate for which you hold the private key. The Android build tools provide a debug signing mode that makes it easier for you to develop and debug your app. When using debug mode to build your app, the SDK tools invoke Keytool to automatically create a debug keystore and key. This debug key is then used to automatically sign the APK, so you do not need to sign the package with your own key. Make sure that the Keytool utility and Jarsigner utility are available to the SDK build tools. Both of these tools are available in the JDK. In most cases, you can tell the SDK build tools how to find these utilities by setting your JAVA_HOME environment variable so it references a suitable JDK. Alternatively, you can add the JDK version of Keytool and Jarsigner to your PATH variable. The SDK tools create the debug keystore/key with predetermined names/passwords: Keystore name: "debug.keystore" Keystore password: "android" Key alias: "androiddebugkey" Key password: "android" CN: "CN=Android Debug,O=Android,C=US" In Eclipse/ADT on Windows, go to: Windows > Preferences > Android > Build On Mac, go to: Eclipse -> Preferences -> Android -> Build Validate the location of your Android debug.keystore: <android_sdk>\.android Jay Urbain, Ph.D. 6

7 Note: If you want to generate your own key: Open a Windows explorer folder and navigate to your JDK installation. For example, C:\Program Files\Java\<JDK_version_number>. Hold down the Shift key and right-click the bin folder. Select Open command window here from the context window to open a cmd window. Paste the following Java keytool command into your cmd window and make sure you provide the proper path to your debug.keystore: keytool -list -v -keystore "C:\Program Files (x86)\android\android-sdk\.android\debug.keystore" -alias androiddebugkey -storepass android -keypass android Make a copy of the SHA1 certificate finger print from the command window. Right-mouse click Mark the text. Navigate to the upper border. Right-mouse-click Copy. Note: To create a release certificate fingerprint you would need to go to Android Tools -> Export Signed Application Package. Let s skip this for now. Jay Urbain, Ph.D. 7

8 3) Generate Debug API Key for Google Maps Android API v2 service To access the Google Maps servers with the Maps API, you have to add a Maps API key to your application. The key is free, you can use it with any of your applications that call the Maps API, and it supports an unlimited number of users. You can obtain a Maps API key from the Google APIs Console by providing your application's signing certificate and its package name. Once you have the key, you add it to your application by adding an element to your application's manifest file AndroidManifest.xml. Navigate to the Google APIs console: Create an Android Maps v2 Project by selecting the drop-down list under Google apis. Jay Urbain, Ph.D. 8

9 Make sure your project is selected. Select API Access, and select Create new Android key Enter your SHA1 certificate fingerprint followed by a semicolon, and a project src packages as follows: Jay Urbain, Ph.D. 9

11 5) Modify your AndroidManifest.xml Modify your AndroidManifest.xml with the permisions, uses-feature (OpenGL ES2), and API key as bolded below. 14 6) Create a basic layout for your Map App: Include a fragment as shown below with: class="com.google.android.gms.maps.mapfragment" Note: You need to include the xmlns:map namespace if you want to include map settings in your include file.
