With headquarters at the Educational Information and Resource Center (EIRC) in Mullica Hill, NJ CAP is funded through the Division of Prevention and Community Partnerships and encompasses the core values of the NJ Department of Children and Families and the NJ Department of Education. Students enjoy learning about rights to be safe from abuse and bullying. Our Core Standard The New Jersey CAP Network maintains that all children have rights. By bringing awareness to these rights, through providing prevention education to schools and communities in New Jersey, students and their families will be strengthened, which will contribute to the reduction of their vulnerability to assault and interpersonal violence. Our Core Belief All Children Deserve to be Safe, Strong and Free 2

3 A Note from the Directors Dear Friends: As we review the year s activities, we are thrilled at the sheer numbers of children and adults who have received CAP s empowerment message. From Sussex to Cape May and from the Atlantic to the Delaware, we are proud that in one year, 675 schools have implemented CAP. They have all participated in the CAP approach to prevention; an approach, which enlists the entire school to view assault as a violation of basic human rights; an approach which empowers every student to not only stand up for their own rights but to also care about the rights of others. This report demonstrates the outstanding work of our County CAP Coordinators, the over 200 CAP facilitators, our Advisory Board and our CAP local host agencies and community partners. Because of this powerful CAP network of advocates, New Jersey schools are better informed, communities educated and families strengthened to the belief that All Children have the right to be Safe, Strong and Free. We hope that this report will help you see the power of the CAP program. Cheryl Mojta and Jeannette Collins Director of Operations Director of Curricula The staff of the NJ CAP Regional Training Center, State CAP Office at EIRC, at the Rowan University Technology Park in Mullica Hill, NJ.

4 At a Glance Reaching More Communities Across New Jersey Now, in its 28th year, CAP s County projects are involved on a local level with over 92% of NJ s communities and school districts. TRAINED 91,475 STUDENTS STATEWIDE NJ CAP Level of Service 674 Schools 609 Adult Workshops/11,932 Staff and Parents 4,924 Classroom Workshops/91,475 Children The Power of Review Time: No other program has a period County CAP Projects Statewide 41,462 STUDENTS CHOSE REVIEW TIME immediately following the training for a time to process what the students have learned on a one-to-one basis with prevention specialists. The primary purpose of Review Time is to review and reinforce prevention strategies. Students attend Review Time on a volunteer basis only and because of the nature of the program information, students occasionally disclose; 1. Problems that can be resolved by the student through problem solving. 2. Problems that need school staff referral. 3. Problems which need school and outside intervention. Totals for Review Time: Types of Problem Solving 41,462 Students chose to attend 7,245 utilized CAP strategies to problem solve situations 717 were referred to school staff 108 were referred to school staff and outside intervention Total reports of bullying: 3,540 self reported as victims 426 reported as witnesses 190 self reported as bullying behaviors In one school year, over 200 accounts of CAP success stories were submitted to the NJ CAP RTC from teachers, school administrators, parents and County CAP Projects, involving children who received help with family problems, bullying, harassment, sexual and physical abuse, suicidal ideation, and dangerous life threatening situations. 4

5 Impact on the Problem CYBER-BULLYING 1 in 6 students have been cyber-bullied. 39% of Teens have participated in some type of sexting. NJ CAP statistics reveal: CAP trained over 4,760 students grades 6th through 8th in its Cyber Empowerment Program. The same year, it trained 14,288 Kindergarteners through 8th graders in CAP s Bullying Prevention Program. Evaluations from School Administrators found 98% satisfaction with the program! We are so thankful that CAP came to our school and helped one of our 4th grade students. Unbeknownst to us, he was being so horrendously cyberbullied, he wanted to commit suicide. Thanks to CAP we were able to get him the help he needed and end this harassment. We can t thank you enough! - Elementary School Principal SEXUAL ABUSE AND VIOLENCE NJ CAP worked to reduce child sexual abuse and assault by: Training 103,407 children and adults in assault prevention.
