You are required by State regulations to keep your occupational radiation exposure as low as reasonably achievable. 3. Regulations allow a maximum permissible occupational radiation exposure to the whole body of rem per year.

3 13. Patients undergoing an x-ray procedure that may involve radiation exposure to must be provided with shielding, when appropriate. 14. Every employee has the responsibility to report to the Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) any radiation safety concerns or unsafe acts involving x-ray machines. 15. It is acceptable for an individual to share a radiation dosimeter as long as both individuals are working together during an x-ray procedure. 16.A good way to keep your exposure ALARA is to decrease your time spent near an x-ray beam; increase your distance from the beam, and apply shielding by wearing a lead apron, thyroid shield, etc. 17. The amount of shielding provided by a.25 mm lead apron for an x-ray beam at 75 kvp is about 95%. 18. Scatter radiation mainly travels in one direction and thus by standing left or right of the table you can be assured of reducing your radiation exposure.

4 19. The average background radiation received by a person is about 360 mrem per day. 20. During fluoroscopic procedures scatter radiation is produced when x-ray radiation interacts with the patient and/or table. 21.
