1 Flying Fox Tower- Risk Assessment Control measures need to be low; if the level of risk is medium or higher the activity is not to be run as it is unsafe. This document is for the use of Lutanda Recreation and Conference Centres only and has been written and designed to ensure the activity is run in the safest possible way. The ratio for this activity is 1:17 1 instructor to 17 participants + 1 responsible adult for groups under the age of 18. The age required to participate is 8 years and up. 1 The Participant is the person who participates by climbing the tower and travelling down the cable run on the flying fox. Falling from Harness All participants will be shown how to correctly fit the Harnesses prior to activity commencement. The activity facilitator will check individual harnesses at the tope of tower before hooking them onto the safety sling, then everything checked again after they are set up for the flying fox this is before the gait is open. All harnesses are checked regularly for any faults or fatigue related damage and will be replaced if evidence of either is present. Under no circumstance is the participant allowed to hang upside down. Pregnancy / injuries Pregnant women are not allowed to participate in this activity. People suffering from back and neck pain are advised not to participate as it may aggravate or worsen the injury. Also people suffering broken bones or recovering from surgery are advised to not participate as it may cause Sun burn / Heat exhaustion further injury. Participants are advised to wear hats when not wearing helmets, sunscreen and appropriate sun safe clothing during the activity. Where practicable during the induction and debrief, the instructor should utilise any shade that is available. Participants are encouraged to bring drink bottles to the activity. Falling from tower Participants will be clipped onto a safety line prior to stepping into the gated area of the fox platform. Participants waiting on the tower stairs will be briefed on where to stand and wait and must remain in designated areas. Gates to the flying fox will remain closed until the participant is attached to the fling fox pulley. Being hit with flying fox strops When the instructor on the ground slides the flying fox strops to the top, they are to do it slowly and only after the instructor at the top has asked for it. The gates on the flying fox are to remain shut until the participant is attached to the cable Tangle of harness / clothing being caught Harness ends should be tucked away neat, tidy and out of the way to stop it from being caught. Loose jewellery that may cause injury must be removed. Enclosed sturdy shoes must be worn. In the event a participant suffering such symptoms, the gait will close and they instructor will un-attach them from the flying fox and they will walk back down the tower. 2 Not being able to follow instructions Participants must be 8 years old to participate in this activity. Participants with learning disabilities or mental disorders will be given one on one instruction from the instructor and these participants must be accompanied by a carer. If any participant is found to not be cooperating or following safety procedures they will be refused to participate by the instructor. The flying fox area is out of bounds to campers unless an instructor is with them. The tower is to remain locked at all times other than activity times. Setup to be performed by competent site specific instructor. Before and during each session, the activity instructor will check the. Participants are to be briefed about leaving all their belongings at the bottom of the tower. Any gear that they are required to carry up is to be attached to the harness. Participants will be briefed on where to stand when on top if the tower. Participants will be briefed on the correct procedures to safely travel and self belay down the fox. There will be a supervising adult or Lutanda staff member at the bottom belay on the rope when the participant descends. Participants will be shown how to unhook the Karabiner and work the descending device prior to travelling on the fox. Participants will be briefed about the safest ways to leave the platform. Participants are advised not to jump heavily off the platform. Participants will be tightened into the descending device so that there will be no impacting with the platform floor when they leave the tower. Medium. 3 2. Instructor/Guide is the Yarramundi Recreation and Conference Centre staff member s running the activity. Gates to the flying fox are to be shut while you are setting up the participant. Check participant safety and instructor safety before opening gaits. Unaware of the client s needs The instructor is to be notified of clients with behavioural difficulties, learning disabilities, physical disabilities. An instructor trained in the above stated client needs must be present during the running of the activity. 4 3 Supervising adult/others/observers are the clients waiting a turn / observing. Supervising adult. Not knowing where to wait or stand Participants will be advised by their instructor on where and where not to go during the operation of the activity. If the observers with participants are interfering with the activity the instructor will be forced to shut the activity down. 5 4 Equipment is the structure and safety used during the operation of the activity. Staff are required to go through an in-depth training period with the activity coordinator where they will need to be signed off to industry standard on all safety aspects before being able to run the activity unassisted. All is checked off by the instructor at setup of the activity and during the operation. There is also a general inspection done every 2 months, and an annual inspection done by a qualified engineer. If the is found to be faulty or damaged, the activity will not operate until the problem can be rectified. member. When unattended, the harnesses are stored out of sight from the activity so as to prevent anyone from using the unsupervised. All structural is designed to withstand and be housed in outdoor weather conditions; e.g. treated poles; galvanised nuts, bolts and washers; galvanised cable. The harnesses, ropes and carabineers are also designed to be used outside but are stored in a cool dry room. If anything is found to have been damaged due to weather it will not be used and will be replaced before commencing the activity. All is to be stored in the sports room in its correct place. Wet and cold weather/ hypothermia This activity can run in the rain unless the is lighting and thunder. Participants and instructors are advised to wear worm clothing and wet weather clothing. If it participants get to cold the insructor will stop the activity so they can go inside and get worm.
