2 2 Content Checklist Decision Focused A simulation of real-life business circumstances presenting primary data and the protagonist s dilemma to facilitate teaching students the decision-making process. Use Primary Data The use of direct quotes (in quotation marks) is often very effective to add life to the case and portray characters who may or may not have different views on the situation and its resolution. Secondary data such as journalistic accounts may supplement primary data Avoid Poetic License Do not speculate or fictionalize; it is illegal to attribute statements, actions, or feelings, etc. to actual persons. Tense The case must be written in past tense. Authors should imagine the case being read one or two years in the future, after the events have already transpired. The instructor s manual may be written in present tense. Business English Use clear and concise syntax. Use active voice where possible. American Spelling Non-English words should be italicized and either defined in the narrative (or in a Glossary at the end of the case but before the exhibits or other appendices).

3 3 Formatting Checklist Font Times New Roman size 12 font for text Size 10 font for long quotations and footnotes Margins 1 inch (2.54 cm) on each side. Text Single OR double spaced, left justified, right margin ragged Case Title Centered, bolded, and fully capitalized in one or two lines. Do not underline. Subtitles Capitalize and center major headings in bold-faced type; minor headings should be flush left, bold-faced, with the first letter of the word or phrase capitalized. Citation Style Source material should be referenced in endnotes in APA format. For more information on APA formatting, Purdue s Online Writing Lab (OWL) at is an excellent resource. Figures and Charts Inclusion of photographs, diagrams, charts, graphs, and financial statements is appropriate and should be referred to and numbered consecutively (i.e., Exhibit 1, Exhibit 2 etc.) in the body of the case and attached to the end of the case in the same order as Exhibits. Cite sources of information or data presented in each exhibit. Length Any length, inclusive of the one-to-two page case vignette to the longer page strategy Short sections with headers in bold are preferred. Footnotes If you must use them, place footnotes as consecutively numbered endnotes following the case text but before exhibits and appendices. Students do not generally read endnotes, so avoid placing important information in those notes.

4 4 General Style Guide Abbreviations Once an organization is identified it may then be abbreviated throughout the text, e.g. Jackson Family Wines (JFW ) provided the abbreviation is noted in the initial reference. Abbreviate country names such as the United States as U.S. (and the United Kingdom as U.K.). Apostrophes Avoid the grocer s apostrophe (strawberry s $2 / lb. strawberries $2 / lb.). Decades do not require an apostrophe: 1990s, not 1990 s. Check whether you mean to write its or it s. Generally avoid contractions (can t cannot, didn t did not, etc.) except when they occur in quotations. Bullet Points Introduce the list with a semi-colon: use standard MS Word list levels when required; o first item in sub-list; o second item in sub-list; items in the list should begin with a lower case letter and end with a semi colon; except for the last item which ends with a period. Try to avoid going beyond two list levels. Capitalization Use capital letters sparingly, except for the main title and for proper nouns and acronyms. Currencies In text, use currency codes: USD, EUR, GBP. For example: sales in were USD 247,000. In tables of financial data, symbols can be used but note that $ can be ambiguous; is it Australian, Canadian, or U.S. dollars? Decimals Use. (not, ) to indicate decimals. Percents Spell out % as percent Quotations Use double quotes and single quotes for quotes within quotes as required. Place the final quote mark outside the punctuation ending the quote (usually a period). Indent longer quotes (<40 words) by five spaces (0.5 in, 1.27 cm) from the left margin. Do not put quotes in italics. Be sure to attribute all quotes.

5 5 General Style Guide continued Units of Volume, Area, etc. Use SI units where possible (with equivalent US units if considered absolutely necessary): By 2012, the vineyard had expanded to 120 ha (296 acres); volumes increased to 12,500 hl (330,000 US gallons); the winery is located 550 km (340 miles) from the nearest port. Note that the US gallon is not the same as the UK gallon!
