2 Eligibility All contestants must be members in good standing of a Western Ontario Region branch with all fees paid and be confirmed members of the OEF Contestants may compete at their tested CPC level or higher and may return to their tested level even if they competed above it in a prior year The number of competitors from each branch in total or at any level may be limited by the organizers Entries in the E Junior division must be under 10 years of age as of Jan 1. Divisions of Competition All A and B levels combined All C levels Combined D2 Level D1 Level D Level E Level E Junior Level An Affiliate Members division may be added if entries justify. All questions will be as for the A/B division but scores will be separate and will not count towards branch totals or the Regional High Points award. One or more of the D levels may be combined if there are insufficient entries. Usually, divisions will be run if there are 10 or more entries. The E levels may also be combined if there are insufficient entries. Type and Number of Questions There will be 100 questions for all divisions except E Junior which will have 80 questions. The questions will be broken down as follows: Pictures o 15 questions o Pictures should be full size 8x10 inches on separate sheets. o Each picture will be associated with a question which may involve the identification or description of an object, person, horse, or other horse related items. o Each competitor will have an equal opportunity to view each picture Multiple Choice o 20 questions (15 for E Junior) o Each question will have at least 3 and no more than 4 options at the E and D levels, 5 at the C level, and 6 at the A/B level. 3 Fill in the Blanks o 15 questions (10 for E Junior) True/False o 20 questions (15 for E Junior) o Marks are NOT deducted for incorrect answers. Miscellaneous o 15 questions (10 for E Junior) o May be a mixture of multiple choice, fill in the blanks, true/false or other questions o Limits as above apply for multiple choice questions o No essay type questions allowed. Objects o 15 questions o Each item will be associated with a question which may involve the identification, description, or use of the item. o Each competitor will have an equal opportunity to view each item Preparation and Verification of Questions Normally, the preparation of the questions will be split up among all branches. Branches must submit their draft questions well in advance of the Quiz to allow proper review and corrections where necessary. A deadline will be set and branches missing the deadline may be refused entry to the Quiz. The organizers may require that extra questions be submitted for each category in case some are not suitable for the intended level. If the organizers wish, the preparation may be assigned differently In all cases, the Technical Delegate will review the submitted questions and may change the wording, remove questions, or transfer questions to a test for a different level. The assistance of a teacher or other person familiar with written examinations is recommended to help avoid confusing or ambiguous wording of the questions. The decision of the Technical Delegate as to the suitability of any question is final. Scoring Each correct answer will be awarded one point. Half points may be given for partially correct answers however no other fractions may be used. All scores must be either full or half points. The winner in each division shall be the member with the highest total points from all 6 types of questions combined. Page 2

4 If there is a tie for any position, including team positions, the tie shall be broken by comparing first each individual s score for the Objects questions. If a tie still exists, the individual scores will be compared for the other types of questions one type at a time until the tie is broken. The order in which the question types will be compared following Objects is o Pictures o Miscellaneous o Fill in the Blanks o Multiple Choice o True/False. If a tie still exists, the tied may be asked to answer some questions from a higher level, additional tie breaker questions, or may be given ad hoc written or oral questions by the Technical Delegate. Checking Results Branches may assign one person for each 10 competitors to review the test results after marking and before announcing final scores. The reviewer must be one of the competitors but may be from any branch. Reviewers will be allowed a maximum of 30 minutes. The Technical Delegate will have the final decision as to whether marks will be changed or not. Awards Individual ribbons are awarded for 1st to 6th place in the A/B division and 1st to 10th place in all other divisions. The annual Quiz Championship trophy is awarded to the Branch with the highest total score calculated by adding the score of the highest placing individual from each branch in each division EXCEPT the Affiliates Division if there is one. Ribbons are awarded to the 2 nd to 5 th place branches. Page 3

5 Western Ontario Quiz Games Entry in the Games segment of Quiz is optional. There is no extra cost in participating in the Games. Teams can consist of no fewer than 3 and up to 5 members. Scramble teams are accepted. There is no limit to the number of teams a branch can enter. Teams will be split into Junior (E junior to D2)& Senior (C to A/B) for the competition. Level is the level entered in the Quiz competition. Substitution of team members on the day will be allowed with written notification to the organizers. Games scores will not count toward the Regional results. A separate set of awards will be presented. Parent volunteers will be needed to run the games. Please indicate names on the volunteer part of the entry forms. The games will be Jeopardy, Win,Lose,Draw, Bridle Path and Concentration. Games Rules 1. Jeopardy: Based on the TV show. One team at a time play the game. Players choose a topic and a point value from the specially designed board. The answer is read from the card and the player must give the correct question. The harder questions are found under the higher point values. Players on the team take turns to answer. Maximum time allowed for the game is 10 minutes. Team points are accumulated and recorded. For example: (These are not necessarily the topics that will be at the competition) Feeding Conformation Starts with C Famous Horses Foot & Shoeing Tack Starts with C for 3 points, a pain in the stomach, What is Colic? 2. Win, Lose or Draw: One team at a time play the game. Maximum time allowed is 10 minutes. A player will be given an item to draw, the other team members guess the item. 5 points are awarded for each item guessed correctly. Players take turns to draw. Teams can move on to the next item if they can t guess the current item. If there is time remaining, teams may return to missed items. Page 4

6 3. Concentration: One team at a time play the game. A table will be set up with a number of items on it (20 for Juniors and 30 for Seniors). Teams view the items for 90 seconds, and will then have 5 minutes to write down as many items as they can remember. One score sheet per team. 1 point is awarded for each correct item. 4. Bridle Path: Is a race against the clock to put a bridle together. Juniors will have a snaffle bridle, Seniors will have a double bridle. Penalties (in seconds) will be given for faults (such as a strap twisted, bit on backwards etc.), keepers not used, bridle not put up correctly. 2 Second penalty for each fault. 0.5 second penalty for each keeper 5 second penalty for not put up correctly Note: There are a lot of teams playing the games. Teams will have to cycle through the 4 games promptly, starting at 12.00pm. a Schedule will be handed out in the registration package on the day. In order to finish the games in a timely fashion, there may be 2 stations of the same game. Teams only need to play at 1 station. Page 5
