ANTHONY OF PADUA
THE MIRACULOUS RESPONSORY Priest: Were one to search for miracles: Reprieve me from death s captivity, Disease and demons both retreat, Good health succeeds infirmity. At your request the seas obey and lifeless limbs grow strong and new: As things long lost are found again, when faithful hearts pray to you. Priest: All dangers vanish at your prayer and deep distress quick to flee. Let those who know your power well all rightly praise your charity. At your request, etc. Priest: All praise and love unceasingly be to the Father and the Son and to the Holy Paraclete: In persons three, in essence one. Priest: Response: Priest: Response: CONCLUDING DAILY PRAYER May the divine assistance remain always with us. May the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. O God, may the votive commemoration of blessed Anthony, your confessor, be a source of joy to your Church, that she may always be fortified with spiritual assistance, and deserve to enjoy eternal rewards. Through Christ our Lord. At your request, etc. Priest: Pray for us Saint Anthony. That we may be worthy of the promises of Christ. Priest: Let us pray: O God, may honoring the memory of St. Anthony, your confessor and doctor, be a source of joy to your church, that she may be always fortified with spiritual assistance and deserve to enjoy eternal reward. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. I greet you with all my heart. I greet you a thousand times, O St. Anthony. You are a chosen vessel of divine grace. You are blessed as the most humble, and the most admirable son of your seraphic Father, St. Francis. Remember, O remember, miraculous saint, that you never fail to help and console those who invoke you in need. Animated with great confidence and the certitude of not praying in vain, I have recourse to you who are so rich in grace and a most fortunate friend of our Lord. 2 11
BLESSING WITH THE RELIC Priest: By the intercession of the Most Blessed Virgin Mary, St. Peter, St. Paul, St. Anthony, and all the saints, and through the boundless mercy of God, may He deliver you from your present ailment and from all harm of mind and body, in the name of the Father +, and of the Son +, and of the Holy + Spirit. May the Power of God be with you that He may heal and defend you! May He before you that He may guide you! May He be about you that He may protect you! May He be above you that He may bless you, heal you, and sanctify you, who with the Son and the Holy Spirit loves and reigns, world without end. By your grace, O God, we make these prayers with one accord, holding to the promise of Your Son, that whatever two or more are gathered in His name, You will grant their requests. Fulfill now, O God, these petitions of your people as may be most expedient for them, granting us in this world knowledge of Your Truth and in the world to come life everlasting, for all glory, honor and worship are yours, O Most Blessed Trinity, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, now and unto all ages. With all these witnesses to faith around us like a cloud, we must throw off every encumbrance, every sin to which we cling, and run with resolution the race for which we are entered, our eyes are fixed on Jesus, on whom faith depends from start to finish. Jesus, who, for the sake of the joy that lay ahead of Him, endured the cross, making light of its shame, and has taken His seat at the right hand of God! O, St. Anthony, saint of miracles, saint of help. I also have need of your assistance. I have need of this special favor. (Ask here the special favor desired.) Therefore, console me in my present necessity, and give me the help that with full confidence I beg of you. Bless me, O great saint + in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Great St. Anthony, who has received from God special power to recover lost things, help me that I may find that which I am now seeking. Obtain for me also, an active faith, perfect docility to the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, detachment from the vain pleasures of the world, and an ardent desire for the imperishable good of an everlasting happiness. Look down, glorious St. Anthony from the High Court of Heaven and pray for us sinners, and obtain for us the particular favor we ask in this Novena, if it be for the honor and glory of God, the salvation of our souls, and the welfare of those for whom we pray. THE CHAPLET OF ST. ANTHONY Priest: St. Anthony of Padua, friend of Jesus, pray for us! Let us pray: Give ear we beseech you, O Lord, our God, to our prayers which we offer St. Anthony, and by the interceding merits of him who had the grace to serve you worthily, free us from all our sins. Through Christ our Lord. Amen (Extending hands over the congregation) They shall lay their hands upon the sick and they shall recover. May Jesus, the Son of God, the Lord and Savior of the World, through the intercession of Blessed Anthony, show you favor and mercy. 10 3
May every infirmity be allayed by the imposition of my hands, and by calling upon all the Holy Angels, archangels, patriarchs, prophets, apostles, martyrs, confessors, virgins, widows, together with all the saints, may we all be assisted by their merits and prayers. Through Christ Our Lord. PSALM 86 Recited together. O Lord, listen to me and answer me, because I am weak and helpless. Save me because I am your servant and trust in you. You are my God, be merciful to me because I pray to you all day long: Lord, you are good and forgiving, full of constant love to all who call upon you. Listen Lord, to my prayer, hear my cries for help, I call to you in times of trouble because you answer my prayer. DAY NINE Saint Anthony, servant of Mary, glory of the Church, pray for our Holy Father, our bishops, our priests, our Religious Orders, that, through their pious zeal and apostolic labors, all may be united in faith and give greater glory to God. St. Anthony, helper of all who invoke you, pray for me and intercede for me before the throne of Almighty God that I be granted the favor I so earnestly seek in this novena. (State your intention) Teach me O Lord to do Your Will, and I will obey you faithfully. Teach me to search You with complete devotion. Then I will praise You with all my heart. Turn to me and have mercy on me. Strengthen me and save me, because I serve you just as my mother did, show me a proof in your goodness O Lord, so that my enemies will see that you have given me comfort and help. (Please Bow) Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be world without end, Amen! 4 9
DAY SEVEN O renowned champion of the faith of Christ, most holy St. Anthony, glorious for your many miracles, obtain for me from the bounty of my Lord and God the grace which I ardently seek in this novena (State your intention). O holy St. Anthony, ever attentive to those who invoke you, grant me that aid of your powerful intercession. DAY EIGHT O holy St. Anthony, you have shown yourself so powerful in your intercession, so tender and so compassionate towards those who honor you and invoke you in suffering and distress. I beseech you most humbly and earnestly to take me under your protection in my present necessities and to obtain for me the favor I desire (State your intention). Recommend my request to the merciful Queen of Heaven, that she may plead my cause with you before the throne of her Divine Son. DAY ONE DAILY PRAYERS O holy St. Anthony, gentlest of saints, your love for God and charity for his creatures made you worthy while on earth to possess miraculous powers. Miracles waited your word, which you were ever ready to speak for those in trouble or anxiety. Encouraged by this thought, I implore you to obtain for me the favor I seek in this novena (State your intention). The answer to my prayer may require a miracle; even so, you are the saint of miracles. O gentle and loving Saint Anthony, whose heart was ever full of human sympathy, whisper my petition into the ears of the Infant Jesus, who loved to be folded in your arms, and the gratitude of my heart will always be yours. DAY TWO O miracle-working St. Anthony, remember that it never has been heard that you left without help or relief anyone who in his need had recourse to you. Animated now with the most lively confidence, even with full conviction of not being refused, I fly for refuge to thee, O most favored friend of the Infant Jesus. O eloquent preacher of the divine mercy, despise not my supplications but, bringing them before the throne of God, strengthen them by your intercession and obtain for me the favor I seek in this novena. (State your intention) 8 5
DAY THREE O purest St. Anthony, who through your angelic virtue was made worthy to be caressed by the Divine Child Jesus, to hold him in your arms and press him to your heart. I entreat you to cast a benevolent glance upon me. O glorious St. Anthony, born under the protection of Mary Immaculate, on the Feast of her Assumption into Heaven, and consecrated to her and now so powerful an intercessor in Heaven, I beseech you to obtain for me the favor I ask in this novena (State your intention). O great wonder-worker, intercede for me that God may grant my request. DAY FOUR I salute and honor you, O powerful helper, St. Anthony. The Christian world confidently turns to you and experiences your tender compassion and powerful assistance in so many necessities and sufferings that I am encouraged in my need to seek your help in obtaining a favorable answer to my request for the favor I seek in this novena (State your intention). O holy St. Anthony, I beseech you, obtain for me the grace that I desire. DAY FIVE I salute you, St. Anthony, lily of purity, ornament and glory of Christianity. I salute you, great Saint, cherub of wisdom and seraph of divine love. I rejoice at the favors our Lord has so liberally bestowed upon you. In humility and confidence I entreat you to help me, for I know that God has given you charity and pity, as well as power. I ask you by the love you did feel toward the Infant Jesus as you held him in your arms to tell Him now of the favor I seek through your intercession in this novena (State your intention). DAY SIX O glorious St. Anthony, chosen by God to preach his Word, you received from Him the gift of tongues and the power of working the most extraordinary miracles. O good St. Anthony, pray that I may fulfill the will of God in all things so that I may love Him, with you, for all eternity. O kind St. Anthony, I beseech you, obtain for me the grace that I desire, the favor I seek in this novena (State your intention). 6 7
