2 EMPLOYER RESPONSIBILITY CONSIDERATIONS WHEN SELECTING SAFETY EYEWEAR AS/NZS 1336: recommended practices for occupational eye protection states: An eye safety programme should be introduced where persons at work are exposed to a recognised risk of injury to the eyes. REQUIREMENTS OF AN EYE SAFETY PROGRAMME STEP 1 IDENTIFICATION OF RISK Complete a documentated survey of the workplace that looks at the operations, hazards, risks and includes employees experiences and opinions. STEP 4 ISSUE AND FITTING Eye protection should be issued and fitted to the wearer by a person who is competent to select the correct size and type. STEP 5 MAINTENANCE The user of the eye protectors is responsible to clean them, store them correctly and replace if the protector is damaged. STEP 6 PROMOTION AND EDUCATION Employees require education about the eye hazards that have been identified in the workplace.
