5 What is School Download Library? School Download Library delivers audio book and ebook downloads directly from your school's SDL website to a student's personal computer. Students may borrow and download titles using their school library card. Titles are available 24/7 anytime, anywhere! Your collection includes 1. Hundreds of curriculum-based and recreational titles. 2. Accessibility features for the visually impaired. 3. A credit for MARC records. School selection teams may purchase additional titles through 'Marketplace'. Real-time reports track circulation and other performance data online. V OverDrive, Inc Page 5

6 Students may download ebooks and audio books. An ebook is a text-based title that can be read on a computer or transferred to a portable device. An audio book can be listened to on a computer, burned to CD, or transferred to a portable device. V OverDrive, Inc Page 6

9 How Does School Download Library Work? Easy as 1, 2, 3! STEP 1: Download and install free software. STEP 2: Browse and check out digital titles. STEP 3: Download, and enjoy. V OverDrive, Inc Page 9

10 What's needed to get started? To download digital titles, a student will need: A personal computer. A valid student library card. Free digital media software. Access to the Internet. Internet access is needed to browse, check out, and download titles. After download, enjoy a digital title without being connected to the Internet. V OverDrive, Inc Page 10

11 What are Digital Rights? OverDrive utilizes Digital Rights Management (DRM) Protection to help block unlawful file sharing. This technology can be part of installing software, downloading a title, and / or registering a computer or device. Publishers also set permissions for each title. These rights are important because they describe what a student can do with the title after download. Examples include: Burn to CD, transfer to a portable device, copy / paste, and print. 12 Privacy Protection / Place a Hold The first time a student places a hold they will be prompted to enter their DOB. If the student is under 13 they will be required to enter their parent or guardian's address. The parent or guardian will receive an that alerts them of the student's attempt to place a hold. The parent or guardian may opt to have the student's address removed. In this case, the student will not be able to place further holds until the age of 13. If the parent or guardian never replies the student will receive a holds notification when the title is available. For more information: V OverDrive, Inc Page 12

14 STEP ONE: Download free software from the home page of School Download Library. ebooks Adobe ebooks On-screen reading. Mobipocket ebooks On-screen reading. Transfer to a device. 15 STEP TWO: Browse and check out titles. Browse and search for digital titles from School Download Library. Click on a title image to review a short description, author information, format, and digital rights information. Next, add selections to the Bookbag. V OverDrive, Inc Page 15

16 STEP TWO: Browse and check out titles. "How do I place a hold?" If a title is not available for checkout, there will be a link: 'Place a hold'. Enter an address and receive a notification when the title is available. Hold notification will include the title information, a link to the digital library site, and instructions to check out the hold. To check the status of a hold, go to My Account > My Holds. 17 STEP TWO: Browse and check out titles. After selecting titles, click on the 'Proceed to Checkout' link. Enter school library card number, without spaces. After the card is verified, titles are ready for download. V OverDrive, Inc Page 17

18 STEP THREE: Download, and enjoy. The Download Page features a link to download the free digital media software. Click on the 'Download' button to begin downloading the title. Download checked out titles at a later time by clicking on 'My Account'. V OverDrive, Inc Page 18

19 STEP THREE: Download, and enjoy. Enjoy downloaded titles on laptops and desktop computers, Pocket PCs, PDAs, Smartphones, and MP3 players. Many audio titles can also be burned to CD. V OverDrive, Inc Page 19

20 At the end of the loan period the title automatically expires. When an title is due, it will automatically expire and be checked in. After a title has expired, it will remain on the student's PC, but it can no longer be opened. Students will never accrue late fees with School Download Library! V OverDrive, Inc Page 20

22 What is the OverDrive Media Console? Play OverDrive Audio Books on PCs with speakers or headphones. Burn many audio titles to CD. Transfer to a compatible device using the OverDrive Media Console 'Transfer Wizard'. V OverDrive, Inc Page 22

23 Software Needed for OverDrive Audio Titles Free digital media software. OverDrive Media Console. Windows Media Player (9 Series or higher). Windows Operating System. Win 98 SE or higher. Also compatible with Microsoft's Vista operating system. V OverDrive, Inc Page 23

24 Windows Media Player Security Upgrade First-time users will be prompted to complete a one-time security upgrade for Windows Media Player. Follow the prompts to complete the upgrade. V OverDrive, Inc Page 24

25 How to Download Audio Titles Click on the 'Download' button. A tiny license file is downloaded. Next, OverDrive Media Console launches automatically. In the 'Download Parts' box select which parts to download. Tip: If using a dial-up connection, try downloading a single part. Enjoy listening to the first part as additional parts are downloading. 26 OverDrive Media Explorer Features The OverDrive Media Explorer was designed specifically for the playback of multimedia titles. 1. Speed adjustment (requires Windows XP). 2. Jump back 15 seconds. 3. Resume from furthest point. 4. Bookmark. 5. Hotkeys: Control + P = PLAY Control + S = STOP F9 = Volume DOWN F10 = Volume UP See OMC Help for more 6. 27 Additional Checkouts When an audio title expires, it remains on the student's PC, but it can no longer be opened. A student can check out the title again, download a new license, and listen to their previously downloaded parts. Once a student has finished a title, it may be deleted from the OverDrive Media Console. It is also deleted from the PC. V OverDrive, Inc Page 27

29 Compatible Audio Devices Hundreds of portable devices are available. Check out OverDrive's Device Resource Center: Device must play DRM-protected Windows Media Audio (WMA) files. Audio books: The device must support the bit rate of 32kbps. V OverDrive, Inc Page 29

30 How many titles will fit? Storage Hours / Parts 128 MB = 7 hours / parts 256 MB = 14 hours / parts 512 MB = 28 hours / parts 1 GB = 56 hours / parts 2 GB = 112 hours / parts 10 GB = 560 hours / parts 20 GB = 1120 hours / parts Each 'Part' of an OverDrive Audio Book is approximately MB in size. A ten part audio book will require approximately 180 MB (10 x 18 MB) of storage. V OverDrive, Inc Page 30

31 Transfer to a device 1. Open OverDrive Media Console. 2. Select the title to transfer. 3. Click the 'Transfer' button. 4. The OverDrive Media Console Transfer Wizard will open. Follow the prompts to complete the transfer: Connect your portable device to your computer. Click 'Next' to continue. When the device is detected, the 'Confirm' Screen will appear. Select the 'Parts' you wish to transfer. Choose 'Advanced Options' to modify the storage folder or file name (optional). Click 'OK' to continue. Click 'Next' to transfer the selected parts to your portable device. OverDrive Media Console will test for storage space. You will have the option to delete titles if the device is full. After the transfer is complete, you may disconnect your portable device. 5. Click 'Finish' to close the wizard. V OverDrive, Inc Page 31

32 Burn to CD These are instructions for Windows Media Player 11 series. Please see the Help pages on School Download Library for instructions for other versions. 1. Open OverDrive Media Console. 2. Click on the 'Burn' button. Windows Media Player will open. 3. In Windows Media Player, select the 'Burn' tab. 4. Select the 'Now Playing' list under the 'Playlists' heading on the left side. 5. Select the part you wish to burn and drag it to the Burn list on the right side. 6. Place a blank CDR in your CD-ROM drive. 7. Click the 'Start Burn' button in the lower right corner. 8. Windows Media Player will burn the 'Part' to CD. This process may take a few minutes. You can follow the Player's progress by monitoring the 'Status' field in Windows Media Player. 9. When the burning process is complete, the status field indicates 'Complete'. 10. You can now eject the disc and enjoy your title on CD. V OverDrive, Inc Page 32

34 What is an Adobe ebook? Adobe ebooks Adobe ebooks are textbased titles in.pdf format. Requirements For use on PCs and Macs. Adobe Reader Version or higher required. Adobe Digital Editions recommended. Notes: ADE can be installed without Adobe Reader. Students reading Adobe ebooks on portable devices should continue to use Adobe Reader 6.x / 7.x. 36 Download Adobe ebooks Click on the 'Download' button. Adobe Digital Editions will open automatically. When the download is complete, the ebook can be read right away. You don't need to be connected to the Internet to read Adobe ebooks. V OverDrive, Inc Page 36

37 Borrowed Titles / Early Returns Easy to view lending period: A banner displays the remaining lending period in the upper right hand corner of each thumbnail. Early returns: Click on the thumbnail, and select 'Return Borrowed Item'. V OverDrive, Inc Page 37

38 Expired Titles / Additional Checkouts Expired titles: At the end of the lending period a title displays 'EXPIRED' across the title's cover image. Double-click an expired title for a prompt to delete the title. Not finished? Delete the title from ADE and from My Documents > My Digital Editions. Then check out and download the title again. 39 Mobipocket Reader Mobipocket ebooks

40 What is a Mobipocket ebook? Mobipocket ebooks Text-based titles in a small file format (.PRC). Read on a PC and / or transfer titles to a portable device. Mobipocket is an Amazon.com company. Requirements For use on Windows 2000, XP, or Vista Operating Systems. Mobipocket Reader Version 4.x or higher required. V OverDrive, Inc Page 40

41 Registration Before you check out a Mobipocket title, be sure to register a Device PID. Copy the device PID from Mobipocket Reader: Reading Devices > Edit Properties > Copy Device PID. Paste the device PID into your School Download Library account: School Download Library > My Account > My Mobipocket PIDs. V OverDrive, Inc Page 41

42 Download Mobipocket ebooks After checkout, click on the 'Download' button. When the download is complete, read the title directly in Mobipocket Reader on the PC. Or, click 'Send' to transfer the file to a PDA or other device. V OverDrive, Inc Page 42

43 Mobipocket Features 1. To open a Mobipocket title on a Pocket PC, go to: START > Mobipocket > Select title. 2. To return to the title list, click on 'Library'. 3. Mobipocket Reader also offers: Reflowable text. Full screen mode. Zoom text. Bookmarks. Full text searching. V OverDrive, Inc Page 43

44 Install / Register a New Device for Mobipocket ebooks 1. Install the appropriate plug-in for your device to your PC. Usually this plug-in comes on a CD with the device. The plug-in creates a partnership between a PC and PDA devices. This is a one-time install. One example is ActiveSync : 2. Add the mobile device to the desktop version of Mobipocket Reader: Mobipocket Reader > Reading Devices > Install New Device. Follow the prompts given in the wizard. Mobipocket Reader will then prepare files to be installed to your device. When the synchronization is complete, your new device will be listed under 'My Reading Devices' on the desktop version of Mobipocket Reader. 3. Be sure to register the PID for your new device with your School Download Library Account. Copy the device PID from Mobipocket Reader: Reading Devices > Edit Properties > Copy Device PID. Paste the device PID into your School Download Library Account: Open School Download Library > My Account > My Mobipocket PIDs. V OverDrive, Inc Page 44

48 Reports Many reports are available! Current Waiting List: View titles currently on hold. Purchased Title Report: View all titles owned plus checkouts, holds, and turnover rates for each title. Activity Charts: View borrowing activity. Digital Library Statistics: View summary statistics including titles, checkouts, holds, and number of borrowers. 49 Reactivate a Download A borrower might report: A missing download button. A download error. Why does this happen? Adobe ebooks: A license can be downloaded one time during a single lending period. OverDrive Audio Titles: A license can be downloaded three times during a single lending period. A license for a checked out title is downloaded when a student clicks the 'download' button from School Download Library. V OverDrive, Inc Page 49

50 Reactivate a Download Use Content Reserve to reactivate a download: 1. You will need the borrower's library card number and title. 2. Login to Content Reserve: Reports Tab > Search Checkouts. 3. Enter the library card number. The 'Checkout Details' page appears. 4. Click 'View' next to the title you wish to reactivate. 5. Under 'Reactivate Checkout', enter a reason (required for Adobe ebooks). 6. Click 'Reactivate'. 7. The title can now be downloaded. V OverDrive, Inc Page 50
