1 DRAMA CLUB SCRIPT Term: Summer 2014 Day: Wednesday Age group: Title: Macbeth Knocking (quietly) Witch 1: When shall we three meet again? Witch 2: In thunder lighting or in rain Witch 3: when the hurly- burly s done, when the battle s lost and won All: (quietly) that ll be ere the set of sun W1: Where the place? W2: Upon the heath W3: There to meet with All: Macbeth (all stand, shrink back, cower still face audience) All: (start with Maud, continuous, repeating) Fair is foul and foul is fair, hover through fog and filthy air. (Whilst crawling forward) Freya: A drum, a drum Macbeth doth come Marco: So foul and fair a day I have not seen (all jump, into witches, hissing) Jack: What are these creatures? They look like nothing that inhabit the earth. (Witches lunge) Marco: Are they women? Jack: They can t be women for they have beards! Marco: Speak hags, if you can, what are you? W1: All hail Macbeth, hail to thee, thane of Glamis W2: All hail Macbeth, hail to thee, thane of Cordor

2 W3: All hail Macbeth, hail to thee that shalt be king hereafter. Jack: My friend why so shocked, they say you re going to be king. What about my fortune? (Witches looking at Marco, heads turn to Jack) Olivia: (Creep forward) your sons shall be kings. Jack: My sons? LADY MACBETH Gwen: hem hem, Lady Macbeth a letter from your husband has arrived Pauline: (pacing) my husband, Thane of Cordor? And some wild fortune tellers told him he was going to be king? I rejoice in my partners newly gained respect, this could be the greatest opportunity, (whispers) for power. Ophelia: Madam, apologises for the intrusion King Duncan comes here this very night. Pauline: We must have everything ready, tell the kitchens. (Brendan downs a glass of wine) Pauline: (To Macbeth) Thane of Cordor. Brendan: Please don t Pauline: Well tell me what going on Brendan: It s all happening too quickly Pauline: But my love, such power, such responsibility Brendan: but to be king but I m not sure it is something that I want or need. Also, our king still lives Pauline: And he is on his way here tonight Brendan: We must make him feel welcome, say nothing of my fortunes. (Fanfare) Will: Damn those trumpets, I wish they wouldn t do that wherever I went, where is our host, bring me the Thane of Cordor (Bow and curtsey in front of king)

3 Pauline: Your majesty it is an honour to have you in our home Will: The honour is all mine. Where is the Thane of Cordor? let him show himself. (Brendan bows) Rise. You fought with the heart of 20 men. Let s celebrate our victory together. (Tables Medieval music, Fanfare) Will: How pleased I am with this warm reception. We defeated the Scandinavians, you should be proud of your country. Now to the feast. Didi: Let s eat Josie: Cheers! (freeze) Ben: Has the king asked for me at all? Freya: Not yet my love. But I know that he has drunk a great deal of wine. It won t be long until he takes himself to bed. Ben: (noticeably nervous) I don t think I can be the man you want me to be. Freya: What do you mean? Of course you are. If I were a man I would take this burden for you. But I cannot. I am here for you my husband. And I know you will make a great king. Ben: But what if we fail? Freya: Then we fail. All: Cheers! (eat, yawn, ) Maud: Fleance, my son, what are you doing awake at this hour. Gwen: But father the clock has not yet struck twelve. Maud: How are you expected to hold up a sword without any sleep, my son? Who goes there?! Ben: A friend. A friend. Maud: Ah, Fleance, This is the man I told you about, who I fought with in the war. Gwen: It s a pleasure to meet you, Macbeth. Maud: Now, off to bed, Fleance. Macbeth I dreamt last night of the weird sisters we saw in the forest. Macbeth: Don t think of them again. Erase it from your mind. Maud: You re right. I will see you tomorrow, my friend?

4 Macbeth: Yes. Goodnight, my friend. Is this a dagger I see before me? The handle towards my hand. Come, let me clutch thee. I have thee not yet I see thee still. Art thou a dagger of my mind? All: A false creation. (whisper) Macbeth: Proceeding from a heat oppressed brain. I see thee yet! In a form as palpable. Gwen: My eyes have made fools of the other senses. Opheilia: There is no such thing. Olivia: It is the bloody business. Didi: Which informs us to thine eyes. Freya: Nature seems dead. Silvia:And wicked dreams abuse. Iesha:The curtained sleep. Josie:Witchcraft celebrate. Pauline: The wolf. Will: Whose howls his watch Jack: Moves like a ghost. Dom: Hear not my steps. Malak: Which way they walk. Marco: For fear thy very stones prate of my whereabouts. Brendan: While I threat, he lives. Maud: Words to the heat of deeds. All: Too cold breath gives (whispers) Ben: I go and it is done the bell invites me. Hear it not, Duncan. For it is a knell which summons thee to heaven or to hell. (Chorus to sleeping guards at back) Josie: What s taking my husband so long? (Enter Dom) Dom: It is done

5 Josie: But why do you still have the daggers? Dom: I m afraid to think what I have done. I dare not to look on it again. Josie: I will take them away my love. (Exit, and place daggers on sleeping guards at back) Dom: I thought I heard a voice that said sleep no more. Did you hear anything? Josie: No, the house is sleeping. Look, my hands are the same colour as yours. Dom: Come, let s go wash this sin from our hands. Didi then Will then Brendan : Horror, horror Maud: King Duncan dead! Ophelia: What s going on? Jack: The King, dead, murdered! Freya: Where are the master and the mistress of the house Olivia: ring the bell wake the house! Josie: Murder, in my house? Silvia: Interrogate the guards Dom: You can t. I killed them. (Gasp) Pauline: why did you kill the guards, I needed question them. Dom: I felt so angry that they murdered my king. Aisha: This is a sorry state of affairs. Malak: we must call an emergency meeting, to the hall immediately Olivia: We are not safe here Donalbain. Ophelia: I think it best we leave Scotland immediately. Oliv: I to Ireland Ophelia: I to England (Murders)

6 Marco: Banquo my dearest friend knows too much, I can see it in eyes and hear it in his voice. He must be dealt with. Murders: You called for us Marco: Yes I did. Do you know Banquo and his son Fleance? Murder: Yes, we do. Marco: Kill them both, make it quick. You ll find them in the forest. : Get it done All: Round and round the cauldron go, in the poison entrails throw (cackle) Double double toil and trouble, fire burn and cauldron bubble Ophelia: Fillet of a Fenny Snake Olivia: In the cauldron boil and bake Josie: Eye of newt and toe of frog Silvia: Wool of bat and tongue of dog Freya: Adder s fork and blind-worm s sting Pauline: Lizards leg and howlet s wing Didi: For a charm of powerful trouble Gwen: Like a hell broth, boil and bubble All: Double Double toil and trouble, fire and burn and cauldron bubble x2 Marco: Scale of Dragon, tooth of wolf Aisha: Witches mummy, maw and gulf Malak: Of the ravin d salt sea shark Maud: Root of hemlock, digged in the dark Will: Finger of birth-strangled babe Dom: Ditch delivered by a drab Brendan: Add there to a tiger s cauldron All: Double Double toil and trouble, fire burn and cauldron bubble. Jack (entering) How now, you secret black and midnight hags?

7 Jack: I conjour you to tell me all that you know. All: Speak! Demand! We ll answer. Freya: Say if you would rather hear st from our mouths, or our master s Jack: Call them, let me see them Brendan: Macbeth, Macbeth, beware Macduff, beware the Thane of Fife Jack: So Macduff will try to take my thrown? Aisha: No man of woman born shall ever harm Macbeth Jack: Then live, Macduff, for what need have I to fear thee? Silvia: Beware, Macbeth, when Birnam wood comes to Dunsinane Hill Jack: That can never be, woods cannot move. Therefore my kingdom is safe All: Seek to know no more. Jack: Where are they? Gone? Let this pernicious hour stand accursed in the calendar. Freya: I m glad you re able to come Doctor. Will: I have for two nights watched this woman. When did she last walk? Freya: She got out of her bed, she put on her night gown. She takes some paper she doesn t write on it or read it, she just folds it, unfolds it, and puts it away again. Gwen: Hmm. Have you heard her say anything? Freya: No sir, nothing that I can report. (Lady Macbeth rises) Maude: Here she comes, stand close? Freya: Is she sleep walking? Ben: She can t be, her eyes are open Freya: She seems to be constantly washing her hands. Look, she does it now! Lady Macbeth: Yet there is still a spot!

8 Brendan: Hark! She speaks! I will set down what she says. Lady Macbeth: Out, out damn spot. Out, I say! One, two. Why, then it s time to do it. Hell is murky. Yet, who would have thought the old man to have had so much blood in him Malak: Did you mark that? Lady Macbeth: Here s the smell of blood still. All the perfumes of Arabia cannot sweeten this little hand. Dom: well, well, well. Freya: Pray god be with her, sir. Josie: This disease is beyond my practice. Lady Macbeth: Wash your hands! Do not look so pale. I tell you yet again. Banquo is buried, he cannot come out of his grave! To bed I go. Silvia: Is she really going to bed? Freya: Yes, directly. Ailish: Sir! Macbeth: Bring no more reports, let them fly all. Where did you get that goose look? A: Sir there is 10 thousand.. Opelia: Geese, villain. A: Soldiers sir. O: Ha, what soldiers? A: The English force so please you. Dom: Gracious my lord. O: Well sir Dom: As I stand a watch before Burnham the woods began to move Oph: Liar and slave! Dom: I tell you sire it is moving. Oph: If you re telling lies to me I ll string you up on the next tree. My armour now

9 Fight scene. Didi: turn Hellhound Oph: Of all the men on this battlefield, I have avoided you the most Mcduff Didi: My voice is in my sword, thou bloody villain. Oph: I bear a charmed life, which must not yield to one of woman born. Didi: Well, I tell you this, Macduff was from his mother s womb ripped. Oph: Curs d be the tongue that tells me so, I ll not fight thee Didi: Then yield thee coward Oph: I will not yield to kiss the ground at Malcom s feet. (M&M fight) Didi: hail the king of Scotland! Drums, branches, music for witches, bell, fanfare sound effect
