Its purpose is to give information about available s, the study structure and about certain procedures. 1 The Department of Chemical Engineering The Faculty of Chemical Engineering, today known as the Department of Chemical Engineering, was founded in 1920 and had two professors and few students at that time. The Department has epanded a lot since those days and now has more than 20 professors, more than 200 teachers and researchers and a total of about 1300 students. In 2006 the Faculty of Chemical Engineering change its name to the Faculty of Technology. However, as of the Faculty of Technology ceased to eist and today the Department of Chemical Engineering is part of the Division for Natural Sciences and Technology at Åbo Akademi University. The other three departments in the same division are: the Department of Biosciences, the Department of Information Technologies and the Department of Natural Sciences. The laboratories at the Department of Chemical Engineering that take part in the programme are: - Analytical Chemistry AK Aelia I 2 nd floor (Analytisk kemi) - Heat Engineering VT Aelia I 3 rd floor (Värmeteknik) - Industrial Chemistry TK Aelia I 2 nd floor (Teknisk kemi och reaktionsteknik) - Industrial Management IEK Aelia II 3 rd floor (Industriell ekonomi) - Inorganic Chemistry OOK Aelia II 4 th floor (Oorganisk kemi) - Organic Chemistry OK Aelia II 4 th floor (Organisk kemi) - Paper Coating and Converting PaF Gadolinia 4 th floor (Pappersförädling) - Physical Chemistry FyKe Gadolinia 3 rd floor (Fysikalisk kemi) - Polymer Technology TPK Aelia II 4 th floor (Teknisk polymerkemi) - Process Control RT Aelia I 3 rd floor (Reglerteknik) - Process Design & System Engineering AST Aelia II 3 rd floor (Anläggnings- och systemteknik) - Fibre and Cellulose Technology FCT Gadolinia 1 st floor (Fiber- och cellulosateknik) - Wood and Paper Chemistry 3PK Gadolinia 5 th floor (Trä- och papperskemi) (The abbreviations above are taken from the Swedish names of the laboratories) The Department of Chemical Engineering has its facilities in Aelia (Biskopsgatan 8) and Gadolinia (Porthansgatan 3). The Department of Chemical Engineering operates in two buildings: Gadolinia and Aelia (Aelia has two parts: Aelia I and Aelia II). Aelia I is the older part at the street Biskopsgatan and Aelia II is the newer part situated behind the older part. The two parts are connected to each other. You can find a map over the campus at the address: Registration for the study year First-year students register for their first academic year The Student Union fee (approimately 100 ) is paid into a bank account using the pre-printed payment slips included in the admission letter. All new students must register during the period defined above and must present an identification card (e.g. driving licence) and a certified copy of their matriculation eamination certificate, as well as the receipt of the Student Union fee payment. A student card (studiekort) is obtained from the Åbo Akademi Student Union office (Studentkåren) in connection with registration. The Student Union office is located in the Kåren-building, Tavastgatan 22, Åbo. You need to prove that you have paid the student union fee by showing a receipt of the payment. Furthermore you need to provide a photo of yourself which is attached to the student card. The student card also shows your student number. 2

In order to maintain their status as students at the university all students at Åbo Akademi University have to notify the Student office of Åbo Akademi University (Studentepeditionen) whether they are present or not for the academic year. The Student office of Åbo Akademi University is located in the Gripen-building, ground floor, Tavastgatan 13, Åbo. Registration for second-year and older students can be done In order to register as present you first need to pay the Student Union fee. In July all students will receive a letter, a payment slip and an etract from the personal data in the Åbo Akademi University Study Register STURE. When you have been registered as present you can pick up your sticker for the academic year for the student card at the Student Union office or at the Student office of Åbo Akademi University. You do not have to present a receipt of payment of the Student Union fee at your place of registration in order to register, provided that you have paid the fee within the given time and used your personal reference number. 1.5 Course registration Registration is required for most s. In these cases registration is done in MinPlan: Instructions for registration are found at the following address: Eaminations Eams usually take place on Wednesdays during the whole study year. Students should register for eams at least five working days before the day of the eam; e.g. if the eam is on Wednesday, registration should be done one week before. You can find the eam dates for the majority of the MPCE s in the end of this guide. The registration is done on the address for all s that are in the database MinPlan (they have codes that contain 6 digits). For other s the enrolment lists can be found on the organising laboratory s notice board, which is situated near or in the laboratory s facilities. The students are usually not allowed to bring all the material to the eam, please see the descriptions Allowed accessories for more information. You should always check with the lecturer what material is allowed in each eam. The eamination during the general eamination day is four hours. There is often, however, an eam separately organised at the end of each, in which only the members can participate. The lecturer together with the students sets the date. The results of the eams are posted on the notice board of the laboratories. Normally they are posted no later than two weeks after the eam. There are only three opportunities to take an eam in the same, after that the lecturer should be contacted and the matter discussed. Registering for an eam counts as one of these three times even if the student does not show up at the actual eam occasion. The results of the s are stored in Åbo Akademi s study register (STURE). An unofficial transcript can be requested on the Internet at the following address: Log in with your user name and password, fill in your student number in the empty field and click the button net to it. A transcript is then sent to your address. If several weeks have passed since the finished but the result is still not in the register, contact the lecturer of the. Official transcripts can be requested from the Student Office or from the Academic Office (Tavastgatan 13). The eams are usually held in three lecture rooms: Ael and Stina, situated in Aelia I, and auditorium A, situated in Gadolinia. On the day of the eam, a list is posted outside each of these auditoriums telling in which auditorium each student should be. Further instructions concerning the Eamination procedures can be found in chapter two. 3

2 Study programme Åbo Akademi follows the so-called Bologna reform concerning studies and credits. According to the new degree structure starting in 2005, the studies will be measured in credits (cr (sp)) (in Swedish studiepoäng, sp). Even if the term credit has already been used for a long time, these new credits do not have the same meaning as before. One old credit (studievecka, sv) is approimately equal to 1.8 new credits. The programme has a large variety of s. Each student has to make an individual study plan within May for the net study year with the computer program MinPlan, located at The Master s Programme in Chemical Engineering has three major subjects: Process chemistry (AK, FYKE, OK, OOK, TK, TPK) Process systems engineering (AST, RT, TK, VT) Pulp and paper technology (3PK, PaF, FCT) The programme has a total duration of two academic years and accounts for 120 cr (sp), of which 30 cr (sp) is for the Master s Thesis. 2.1 Academic year The academic year is divided into four periods, two during the autumn and two during the spring. These are the dates for the periods for the academic year : Period I: w Period II: w Period III: w Period IV: w Winter holiday: Easter holiday: Summer holiday: The structure of the studies Master s Thesis (30 cr (sp)) Advanced studies (30 cr (sp)) Minimum 20 cr (sp) in major subject Intermediate studies (20 cr (sp)) Optional studies (15 cr (sp)) Compulsory module (20 cr (sp)) Language studies (5 cr (sp)) The programme starts with compulsory studies consisting of a compulsory module (20 cr) and language studies (Swedish 5 cr). Information about the language s can be read on the website of the Centre for Language and Communication at The compulsory module represents the three specialization areas in the programme and contains the following s: 6

Principles of Process Engineering, 7 cr Principles of Chemical Reaction Engineering, 5 cr Wood and Fibre Chemistry, 5 cr Academic Writing, 3 cr After the compulsory studies the students select intermediate study s according to their own interest. A minimum of 20 cr of intermediate studies is required. A minimum of 30 cr of advanced studies is required minimum of 20 cr within the subjects that belong to the major subject and 10 cr optional s from other subjects. At least 6 cr have to be taken from the laboratory for which the Master's Thesis is undertaken. Additionally, there is a module of optional studies (15 cr). These studies can be any s at Åbo Akademi, for eample s in languages, economics, and intercultural communication or additional s within the Master s Programme. The Master's Thesis work accounts for 30 cr and is started in the second or third period of the second academic year. The Master's Thesis work is done for one of the participating laboratories. Contact a professor at the laboratory to discuss the Master s Thesis. 2.3 Eamination procedures The academic office manages most written eaminations at the Department of Chemical Engineering centrally. Certain procedures have been created to ease the management of the eaminations. This document is intended to eplain these procedures and give you instructions about what you should do when you intend to take part in a written eamination. Preparations The key to good grades is learning and preparation. Take part in lectures, read the material assigned for the, do the eercises, ask questions and try to understand not only the details but also the general picture. Your preparations will naturally be different depending on the type of eam and on what you are allowed to bring to the eam. Enrollment You have to enroll for the eam in MinPlan. The enrollment begins one month before the eam and closes 5 work days (usually one week) before the eam. Registration for eaminations in MinPlan Log on to MinPlan ( Go to My Registrations (Mina anmälningar) which is the second tab to the right. Then choose Eam registrations (tentamensanmälningar), which is the tab in the middle Go to Find new eams (Hämta nya tentamina) in the left-hand menu Look for the you would like to take the eam in. Look e.g. on the name or code and press Search (sök) When you find the you are searching for, choose the by ticking the bo beneath the Choose (Välj) column and then press Add (Lägg till) Make sure that the column Date of eamination (Tentamensdatum) on the left shows the date for when you want to take the eam. Press Register/Enroll (Anmäl) for the on the right date The following tet will appear up to the right: [message] (meddelande): [Registration complete] (Tentamensanmälan utfördes) Some eams are not found in MinPlan. The enrollment list will then be placed on the notice board of the laboratory that arranges the. You have to write your name and student number on the appropriate enrollment list no later than 5 work days before the eam (Wednesday at 13:15). 7

If you intend to take part in two eams at the same day you must write an to the Department s academic office secretary Mary-Ann Hamberg-Ahola at mahamber@abo.fi containing information about which two eams you would like to take part in. You must also enroll for both eams in MinPlan. When and where The centrally managed eams are always arranged on Wednesdays. They start at 13:15 and end 4 hours later. They are usually arranged in auditorium Stina and Ael in Aelia and in auditorium A in Gadolinia. Find out where these places are! You can find out which auditorium you will be in from lists posted on notice boards at the entrance to each of the auditoriums mentioned above. What to bring to the eam You should bring your own writing material and paper to write on as well as a calculator to all eams. You may also bring a dictionary. To some eams you are allowed or required to bring some specific material needed for the eam the teacher will specify the material. To some eams you may bring any material with the eception of solutions to eercises and solutions old eam questions and to some eams you may bring all material. You may of not use any kind of communication equipment like mobile phones or portable computers with wireless LAN. Rules in the eam room There are a number of rules you must follow during the eam. - Mobile phones must be turned off - You may not leave the eam room during the first hour (before 14:15) since others are allowed to arrive up until that time - You must sit at the place you have been assigned. The supervisor has a map with the sitting order. - If you take two eams simultaneously you must turn in your answers to the first eam before you get the papers for the second eam. You may choose which eam you want to take first. How to write the answers Begin by labeling the papers you write your answers on. All papers you return must at least have your name and student number on them. The supervisor has a bo with printed labels that you can use. Attach the label on the top of the first page by wetting it like a postage stamp. You report your answers or solutions to the eam questions in the same way as you do in eercises. Write clearly and eplain what you do. Turning in the eam papers After you have completed your work you check again that you have written your name and student number on all papers you intend to return. Leave your papers on the place where the supervisor tells you. Checking the results The teacher has two weeks time after the eam to go through and grade your eam papers. The results will then be posted on the notice board of the laboratory that arranged the. The lists usually contain your student number only as identification and your grade as a number. The grade is either not approved or a number between 1 (lowest) and 5 (highest). Some s are graded only as approved or not approved. You can also check your results in the student database through the Internet on the address: First you are asked to log on to the system. Use your normal username and password. You then write your student number in the assigned bo and click on Beställ. You can choose to order the form in both English and Swedish. The results will be sent to you as an . 8
