3 About Lajamanu Lajamanu was traditionally Gurindji country. However, Lajamanu was established as a welfare settlement in 1949 and ceased in the 1970s when Lajamanu Council came in as the first Community Government Council in the Northern Territory. During this time, many Walpiri people from Yuendumu were relocated to Lajamanu. Lajamanu is a very strong traditional community the predominant residents are now the Warlpiri people who actively maintain their language and culture. Warlpiri is the main language in Lajamanu, spoken by about 77 per cent of people. English is also spoken as a second language. Population At the 2011 Census, Lajamanu had a population of 656 people, of which 89% were Indigenous. Power and water Electricity is supplied by a diesel generator. Chlorinated and fluoridated town water is supplied by bore, and waste water is treated in sewerage ponds on the outskirts of town. ICT information Full telephone and internet services. Broadband Satellite Internet Services Telstra 3G Mobile Coverage Television is Digital Access Air Lajamanu can be reached via air travel in 1-2 hours from Katherine and 2.5 hours from Darwin. One mail flight per week is conducted in the community aircraft which is owned by the Lajamanu Progress Association and is operated on their behalf by Chartair. Charter flights are available in and out of the community by Chartair in conjunction with locally owned Lajamanu Air Pty Ltd. Road The town is located approximately 450 kms south west of Katherine, on the northern edge of the Tanami Desert. Access is west on the Victoria Hwy, approximately 120 kms then south onto the Buntine Highway (sealed), approximately 150 kms to Top Springs. Continue west on the Buntine Hwy 180kms (sealed road). Access can also be made from Alice Springs utilising the Tanami Road, which is unsealed and often in poor repair. Local government The Central Desert Regional Council provides local government services in Lajamanu. Its headquarters is located in Alice Springs, with a Service Delivery Centre located in Lajamanu. Land tenure Lajamanu is located within the Hooker Creek Aboriginal Land Trust and is Aboriginal Land under the NT Land Rights Act (NT)

The most important thing expressed by members is the need to preserve and pass on the cultural significance of Warlpiri, the culture of the people of Lajamanu, which encompasses not only art, but includes language, social structure, law and country. In doing so, preservation of pride in being Warlpiri will result. The sustainable, and notable, success of the program is based on the support, strength and character of Warlpiri youth and their communities, and the outstanding dedication of its staff. The program was created by and for Warlpiri people, and is governed by a Committee of 62 Warlpiri people. The program is based out of Yuendumu Community, with outreach programs delivered in Lajamanu. The Corporation also undertakes economic development activities for the benefit of the people in the area. The Corporation operates the retail infrastructure on the community, including supermarket, service station, takeaway food, aircraft refuelling and offers an aircraft for charter through its operator Chartair.
