ENTHRONEMENT OF and CONSECRATION TO THE MOST SACRED HEART OF JESUS and THE PURE IMMACULATE HEART OF MARY OFFICE OF THE MARIAN APOSTOLATE OFFICE OF MARRIAGE, FAMILY & RESPECT LIFE
Introduction These materials are meant to assist you to answer the command of Our Lord Jesus Christ: You, therefore, must be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect (Matthew 5:48). Included are various means to help you draw closer to the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Pure Immaculate Heart of Mary ( The Two Hearts ) and even to have the Enthronement of the Two Hearts in your home, school or workplace. The Office of the Marian Apostolate and the Office of Marriage, Family & Respect Life of the Diocese of Sioux Falls are promoting the enthronement of and consecration to the Two Hearts, and would be happy to answer questions and assist in whatever way needed. This booklet, along with supportive resources are available online at What is the goal of this enterprise? It is a fresh beginning within us and within our homes, schools and workplaces as we express our gratitude to the Hearts of Jesus and Mary and our fervent desire that we may always live under Their sure guidance and protection! Regardless of our vocation, our past and the often frightening times in which we live, Behold, now is the acceptable time; behold, now is the day of salvation (2 Corinthians 6:2). Let us acknowledge the embrace of the Two Hearts, enthrone Their Sacred Images and consecrate ourselves to Them, confident that our commonwealth is in Heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, Who will change our lowly body to be like His glorious Body, by the power which enables Him even to subject all things to Himself (Philippians 3:20-21). In this booklet, you will find: 1. Explanation of the devotions to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary; 2. The 12 promises of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus made to Saint Margaret Mary Alocoque; 3. An explanation of why we enthrone the Two Hearts and consecrate ourselves to Them; 4. Preparation for the Ceremony of Enthronement and Consecration; 5. Detailed program of the Enthronement and Consecration Ceremony; 6. Certificate of Consecration; 7. Special Occasions to Renew the Act of Consecration; 8. Suggested Ongoing Practices of the Devotions; and 9. Additional prayers. 4 5
Sacred Heart of Jesus Devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus came into the Catholic faith through a Catholic sister known as Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque ( ). In her early twenties Margaret Mary entered the Visitation convent at Paray-le-Monial in France. She began to have visions of Our Lord on December 27, Jesus told her that she was to become His instrument in spreading devotion to His Sacred Heart. Our Lord Jesus shared twelve promises for those devoted to His Sacred Heart. Careful preparation and thoughtful Acts of Enthronement and Consecration are wonderful ways to begin your devotion. Immaculate Heart of Mary Devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary came into the Catholic faith through the apparitions of Our Lady to the children at Fatima, Portugal. On July 13, 1917, after Our Lady had shown the children the vision of hell, amongst other things, she told them that various grave ills would afflict the world and that the way to prevent them would come through the consecration of Russia to her Immaculate Heart, and the Communion of Reparation on the First Saturdays. The Blessed Virgin told Sister Lucia the details of the First Saturdays devotion, promising to assist at the hour of death, with all the graces necessary for salvation, all those who, on the first Saturday of five consecutive months go to confession and receive Holy Communion, recite five decades of the rosary and keep me company for a quarter of an hour while meditating on the mysteries of the Rosary, with the intention of making reparation to me. The 12 Promises of the Sacred Heart of Jesus to Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque 1. I will give them all the graces necessary in their state of life. 2. I will establish peace in their homes. 3. I will comfort them in all their afflictions. 4. I will be their secure refuge during life, and above all, in death. 5. I will bestow abundant blessings upon all their undertakings. 6. Sinners will find in My Heart the source and infinite ocean of mercy. 7. Lukewarm souls shall become fervent. 8. Fervent souls shall quickly mount to high perfection. 9. I will bless every place in which an image of My Heart is exposed and honored. 10. I will give to priests the gift of touching the most hardened hearts. 11. Those who shall promote this devotion will have their names written in My Heart, never to be blotted out. 12. I promise you in the excessive mercy of My Heart that My all-powerful love will grant to all those who receive Holy Communion on the First Fridays of nine consecutive months the grace of final perseverance; they shall not die in my disgrace, nor without receiving their Sacraments. My Divine Heart shall be their safe refuge in this last moment. 6 7
Why Enthrone the Two Hearts and Consecrate Ourselves to Them? Consecration to the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary means that we surrender ourselves to Christ and to His Mother. They know what is best for us and we wish to live in union with Them. We earmark all that we are and have to Jesus and Mary, confident that They will take care of us. The Enthronement of the Two Hearts in our homes, schools and workplaces reminds us that we have invited Our Lord to exercise His Lordship and Our Lady her Queenship over us. We belong to the Two Hearts, and we never want to alter this reality! When Mary uttered her history-altering fiat, she gave permission for the Logos the Eternal Word Who is the Second Person of the Most Blessed Trinity to take her flesh and dwell in her virginal womb. But even before the Annunciation, Mary was filled with the supernatural virtue of charity at the moment of her Immaculate Conception. Charity is the virtue that renders one most like God. Of course, Jesus was rooted in charity because He is God. That charity united Mary and Jesus. All that Mary accomplished was first inspired and completed in the Heart of Jesus. In Mary in Our Life, Father William George Most, Ph.D., wrote that Pope Pius XI ( ) declared in his encyclical Miserentissimus Redemptor (May 8, 1928) the importance of authentic devotion to the Most Sacred Heart. True devotion to the Sacred Heart consists in two things, which can readily be reduced to one - consecration and reparation (page 205). Consecration means that we dedicate ourselves and all that we have to the Divine Heart of Jesus (ibid.); by our love we return to the Creator the love that He bestowed on us. Following consecration is reparation, which is necessary if that Uncreated Love (that is, God Himself) has been neglected by forgetfulness or violated by offenses (page 206). It is through the Ever-Virgin that consecration and reparation are made. Pope Pius XI penned: May the most gracious Mother of God smile upon and favor these our prayers and undertakings, she, who since she brought forth Jesus the Redeemer for us, nourished Him, and offered Him as a Victim at the Cross, and is called the Reparatrix, in virtue of her intimate union with Christ, and an altogether singular grace of His (page 207). The Pure Immaculate Heart constantly beats in unison with the Most Sacred Heart, given the similitude between Mary and Jesus. 8 9
Preparation for the Ceremony of Enthronement and Consecration 1. Set a date for the Enthronement and Consecration in your home, school or workplace. 2. Frame the blessed images provided with this booklet or print out a similar image available online, or procure a beautiful picture or statue of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary and have them blessed by a priest. 3. Prepare a "throne," a table or mantelpiece. Perhaps cover it with white cloth and decorate with flowers and candles. Have holy water available. 4. Share with all participants the information provided in this booklet leading up to the ceremony so that they understand the devotions, the enthronement and consecration processes and the promises made for those who devote themselves to the Two Hearts. 5. Invite friends, family and loved ones to the ceremony. 6. Plan a party for after the ceremony and plan to make the day as solemn as possible. 7. Have all participants attend Holy Mass and receive Holy Communion (if old enough) on the day of the ceremony. Enthronement & Consecration Ceremony INTRODUCTION Leader: In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. R/. Amen. Leader: God is Love (1 John 4:16), and all of His works serve to show this divine love to each of us. The Heart of Jesus is the most perfect symbol of the love of God. For this reason, The prayer of the church venerates and honors the Heart of Jesus...It adores the Incarnate Word and His Heart which, out of love for men, He allowed to be pierced by our sins (Catechism of the Catholic Church, n. 2669). Because [Mary] gives us Jesus, her son, Mary is Mother of God and our mother; we can entrust all our cares and petitions to her: she prays for us as she prayed for herself: Let it be to me according to your Word (CCC, n. 2677). Our Lady s Immaculate Heart teaches us how to love her Son, comforting and instructing us. The Enthronement of and Consecration to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary has gathered us here today. Through these acts, we show our desire to express our love of God and the love which He shows to us through his Son Jesus Christ. We also desire to place all our cares and petitions in the Heart of Mary. Our Lord Jesus Christ revealed His Sacred Heart that we might know His infinite and compassionate love for us so that we might truly come alive in Him. This can only happen when we return His love with our love. The way we best show our love for Jesus is when we love others as He loves us; that is, with patience, kindness, gratitude, and mercy. It is in our [home/school/ workplace] that this is especially needed and to what we now commit ourselves. Leader: Let us begin with what we believe
APOSTLES CREED I believe in God, the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried; he descended into hell; on the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty; from there he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen. READING (1 John 4:7-17) Designated Reader: A reading from the first letter of John: Beloved, let us love one another, because love is of God; everyone who loves is begotten by God and knows God. Whoever is without love does not know God, for God is love. In this way the love of God was revealed to us: God sent his only Son into the world so that we might have life through him. In this is love: not that we have loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as expiation for our sins. Beloved, if God so loved us, we also must love one another. No one has ever seen God. Yet, if we love one another, God remains in us, and his love is brought to perfection in us. This is how we know that we remain in him and he in us, that he has given us of his Spirit. Moreover, we have seen and testify that the Father sent his Son as savior of the world. Whoever acknowledges that Jesus is the Son of God, God remains in him and he in God. We have come to know and to believe in the love God has for us. God is love, and whoever remains in love remains in God and God in him. In this is love brought to perfection among us, that we have confidence on the day of judgment because as he is, so are we in this world. The word of the Lord. R/. Thanks be to God. ACT OF ENTHRONEMENT A leader of the home/school/workplace, accompanied by all the participants, carries the images to the place of Enthronement. Leader: We now enthrone Jesus as King and Friend of our [home/school/workplace]. We enthrone Mary as Mother of the Son of God, and Model of Purity and Holiness for our [home/school/workplace]. The image of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and Immaculate Heart of Mary is placed in the selected place. A candle may be lit. ACT OF CONSECRATION Leader: O Sacred Heart of Jesus and Immaculate Heart of Mary, we pray now this Act of Consecration. It is Your great desire to reign over Christian families. We are gathered here today to proclaim Your complete rule over our [home/school/workplace]. From now on we promise to lead a Christ-like life: we will strive to develop all the virtues which bring with them the peace that You promised. And we will not compromise with the spirit of secularism which You have so strongly denounced. All kneel and say the Act of Consecration together: Most Sacred Heart of Jesus and Pure Immaculate Heart of Mary, we consecrate ourselves to You - our very being and all our life, all that we are, all that we have and all that we love. To You we give our bodies, our hearts and our souls. To You we dedicate our [home/school/ workplace] and our country. Mindful of this Consecration, we promise You to live the Christian way by the practice of Christian virtues, with great regard for human respect. O Most Sacred Heart of Jesus and Pure Immaculate Heart of Mary, accept our humble confidence and this Act of Consecration by which we entrust ourselves and our [home/school/workplace] to You
Leader: You will rule over our minds through our deep and living faith. You will reign over our hearts by our generous love for You and each other, and we will cultivate this love by the frequent reception of You, Jesus, in Holy Communion. Divine Heart of Jesus, Immaculate Heart of Mary, preside over our gatherings; bless all our undertakings, both spiritual and temporal. Sanctify our joys and comfort us in our sorrows. And if any member of our [home/school/ workplace] should have the misfortune to offend You seriously, remind him or her, O Sacred Heart of Jesus, of Your infinite love and mercy for the penitent sinner. We ask you Mary through your Immaculate Heart, and our glorious protector, St. Joseph, to offer this consecration to God our Father. And when the hour of separation comes, when death brings its sorrows into our family, whether we go or whether we stay, we will humbly accept Your divine will. And at the same time we will console and comfort ourselves with the thought that the time will come when we will be united lovingly with You in heaven forever. INTERCESSIONS Leader: Lord Jesus, You told us that whatever you ask the Father in my name, He will give to You. In your name, and with great confidence in Your love, we now offer these prayers: Designated Reader: For the grace of being faithful to this covenant with Jesus and Mary and our renewed way of life in Christ, let us pray: R/. Lord, hear our prayer. For an increase of personal, generous love for Jesus, and a greater trust in His merciful love, let us pray: R/. Lord, hear our prayer. That the Holy spirit may always find our hearts responsive to His call, let us pray: R/. Lord, hear our prayer. For a deeper appreciation of the greatest gift of the Heart of Jesus, the Holy Eucharist, through frequent Mass and Communion, especially on First Fridays, let us pray: R/. Lord, hear our prayer. That we may desire to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation more often in order to increase our love for Jesus and to avoid sin, let us pray: R/. Lord, hear our prayer. For all who are absent; may they be protected in all they do. And for all our beloved family who have died; may they be united to the Heart of Jesus and Mary in heaven forever, we pray to the Lord: R/. Lord, hear our prayer. For any other intentions: (pause) R/. Lord, hear our prayer. Leader concludes: God our Father, Through the Sacred Heart of Your Son, Jesus, You pour forth Your eternal love upon us. By the Enthronement of the image of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, and our consecration to them, may we show our love to You and to the world. May the memory of this Consecration be with us always. We ask this through the same Christ our Lord. R/. Amen
