Fully owned office, warehouse & production facilities over 2000m 2 in Marrickville, Sydney, plus new warehouse nearby recently acquired and smaller but similar setup made up over 2 units in Ringwood, Melbourne. 9 The Battery Experts Emerging Technolgies Fuel cell technologies whilst around for some time now miniature versions using ethanol for portable devices still be developed. Reflow such as vanadium redox (invented by Uni NSW) batteries for large capacity stationary applications such as base load now in production Lithium Sulphur prototypes now being tested. Lower cost through use of sulphur & energy density hoped to be 3 times that of lithium ion. (HEV/EV)

Besides those used in mobile phones, laptop computers & other devices AA size NiMH cells are now a top seller for high drain applications such as digital cameras & motorised toys usually outlasting a alkaline battery for performance. 23 Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH) Cons Shorter Cycle life than NiCd - around 500 cycles. Smaller range & sizes available for heavy discharge currents. Higher rate of self discharge than NiCd. Specialised chargers required. Cannot be charged on NiCd chargers other than specially designed packs.

24 Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH) Pros Flat discharge curve of around 1.2 volts per cell. Easy to charge. Virtually no memory effect. Environmentally friendly. Economical to buy & run. Cells appearing with heavy discharge current. Interchangeable with common primary batteries. High Capacity - almost double NiCd.

25 Lithium Ion (LiIon) Pros 3.6 volts per cell 1 cell used instead of 3 NiCd/NiMH types. Much smaller battery packs for a given output in comparison to other technologies. Extremely light Excellent energy density

26 Lithium Ion (LiIon) Cons Cannot generally be used as single cells. Safety circuit required to be incorporated into battery packs. Not interchangeable unless equipment designed for acceptance of the different technologies. Highly specialised chargers required. Comparatively expensive. Shorter overall life & shelf life. Lower maximum discharge current output, generally 2C (twice the battery capacity).

27 Lithium Polymer Technology is virtually identical to Lithium Ion however safer due to aluminium foil case instead of stainless steel Extremely thin & can also be manufactured into shapes other than rectangular such as ovoid or triangular.

28 Lead Acid Batteries Low energy Density Cons Must not be stored discharged or permanent capacity loss incurred. Limited cycle life when repeatedly fully discharged. Environmentally unfriendly. Gel type cannot use AGM type chargers so cannot be readily interchanged although chargers for both types are available. Gel & Sealed Lead Tin type more expensive. Many lesser known brands of limited quality with poor performance & life.
