1 LITHIUM BALANCE CHARGER A Microprocessor controlled, high-performance charger for NiCd/NiMH/LiPo/Pb batteries with an integral individual voltage balancer (LiPo only) Operating Manual Please read this entire operating manual completely and carefully, as it contains a wide variety of specific programming and safety information. The selection of the correct operating parameters is the responsibility of the user. Keep this manual in a safe place, and be sure to pass it on to the new owner if you ever sell your Cavalier EQ.

2 Special Features Voltage Balancer for LiPo Batteries The Cavalier EQ has an individual cell voltage balancer internally so there is no need for a separate balancer when charging a LiPo battery pack. Delta-Peak Sensitivity The automatic charge termination program works on the principle of the Delta-peak voltage detection. Capacity Limit: The charging capacity is always calculated by multiplying the charging current by the time. If the charging capacity exceeds the limit, the process will be terminated automatically when you set the maximum value. Temperature Limit (*): The temperature of the battery while charging will rise because of its internal chemical reaction.if you set the temperature limit, the charging process will be terminated when the limit has been reached. This function requires the use of the optional Temperature Sensor. Processing Time Limit: You can also restrict the maximum process time to help protect against a possible defects in the battery pack. Input Power Monitor: When using a 12v car battery as the primary input power for the charger, the charger will monitor its voltage and shut off if the voltage from the car battery if it becomes too low. This is to protect against your car battery being overdischarged and not having enough power to start your car. High- Power and High Performance Circuit: The Cavalier EQ employs a circuit that has a maximum output power of 50W. As a result, it can charge up to 14 cells of NiCd/NiMH and 5 series of LiPo batteries with a maximum current of 5.0A. The current will be automatically reduced if the 50W limit is exceeded. 4 Warnings and safety notes Never leave the charger unsupervised when it is connected to its power supply. If any malfunction is observed, immediately terminate the process and refer to the operation manual. Keep the unit away from dust, damp, rain, heat, direct sunlight and vibration. Do not drop it. The circuit of the Cavalier EQ is designed to be powered by a 10-18V DC only. The Cavalier EQ and the battery that it is charging should be set up on a heat-resistant, non-flammable and non-conductive surface. Never place them on a car seat, carpet or similar surface. Keep all flammable and volatile materials well away from operating area. Be sure to understand the charging information of the battery to be charged so that it can be done accurately. If the program is set up incorrectly, the battery can be severely damaged. Use extra caution with Lithium batteries as a fire or an explosion can occur by over-charging or selecting the incorrect charging program. To avoid short-circuits between the charge leads, always connect the charge cable to the unit first and then to the battery to be charged. Reverse the sequence when disconnecting. Do not connect more than one battery pack to the charge lead at any one time. Do not attempt to charge or discharge the following types of batteries: - Battery packs which consist of different types of cells (including different manufacturers). - A battery which is already fully charged or just slightly discharged. - Non-rechargeable batteries (Explosion hazard). - Batteries that require a different charge technique from NiCd, NiMH, LiPo or Pb. - A faulty or damaged battery. - A battery fitted with an integral charge circuit or a protection circuit. - Batteries installed in a device, or which are electrically linked to other components. - Batteries that are not expressly stated by the manufacturer to be suitable for the currents the charger delivers during the charge process. Please double check the following points before beginning the charge operation. - Did you select the appropriate program that is suitable for the type of battery you are charging? - Did you set up the correct current for charging? - Lithium battery packs can be comprised with parallel and series circuits mixed Please check the composition of the battery pack carefully before charging. - Are all connections firm and safe? Is there an intermittent contact at any point in the circuit? These warnings and safety notes are particularly important. Please follow the instructions for maximum safety. If these instructions are not followed correctly, the charger and/or battery can be damaged, bodily injury can occur and fire and/or loss of property can also occur

6 Initial Parameter set up The Pro-Peak Cavalier EQ will be set up with default values for the essential user settings when it is connected to a 12V battery for the first time. The screen displays the following information in sequence and you can change the value of the parameters on each screen. If you wish to alter the parameter value in the program, press the start enter key to make it flash, then change the value with the DEC or INC key. Save the parameter value by pressing the Start Enter key once more. USER SET - This confirms that you are in the overall parameters section. Press the Start Enter button to access the parameters and then the DEC or INC buttons to select the individual parameter you require. Press the Start Enter button to select each parameter value in turn and adjust that value with the DEC or INC buttons. Move on to the next parameter using the DEC or INC buttons. To return to the USER SET screen at any time, press the Batt Type Stop button. TEMP CUT OFF - This feature uses the optional temperature probe to contact the surface of battery, the temperature cut-off can be on or off. If it is to On, set the maximum temperature at which the charger should allow the battery to reach during charging.once a battery reaches this temperature, the process will be terminated to protect the battery. SAFETY TIMER - When you start a charge process, the integral safety timer automatically starts running at the same time. This is programmed to prevent overcharge of the battery if it proves to be faulty, or if the termination circuit cannot detect if the battery is full. The value for the safety timer should be generous enough to allow a full charge of the battery. CAPACITY CUT OFF - This program sets the maximum charge capacity that will be supplied to the battery during charge. If the delta-peak voltage is not detected or the safety timer expired for any reason, this feature will automatically stop the process at the selected capacity value. KEY BEEP - A beep will sound every time a button is pressed to confirm your action. A beep will sound at various times during operation to alter different mode changes. These sounds can be turned on or off. INPUT POWER LOW - This program monitors the voltage of the input battery. If the voltage drops below the value you set, the operation will be terminated to protect the source battery. BACK LIGHT - You can adjust the brightness of the LCD screen to suit your preference

7 Lithium Polymer Battery Program These programs are only suitable for charging and discharging Lithium-Polymer batteries with a nominal voltage of 3.7V per cell. These batteries need to adopt different charge techniques and are termed a constant voltage (CV) and constant current (CC) method. The charge current is selected according to the battery capacity, and is usually C/2 rate (half capacity as a charge current). The charge current is not automatically limited in any way so you must select the correct value for your battery. It is not recommended to exceed a 1C charge unless your battery is specifically designed for it. The final voltage of the charge process is also very important. It should be 4.2V/cell for the nominal voltage of 3.7V/cell. If the final voltage exceeds 4.2V you may be risking the chance of fire or explosion of the battery. With the correct settings and a battery in good condition, this is automatically controlled during balancing. It is important to set the correct LiPo program (number of cells in the pack and current) before you begin charging. If you want to alter the parameter value in the program, press Start Enter key to make it flash and then change the value with DEC or INC key. The value can be stored by pressing Start Enter key once more. Charging a LiPo Battery (No Balancing) The value on the left side of the second line sets a charge current. The value on the right side of the second line sets the voltage of the battery pack to be charged. Press Start Enter to select the parameter and then change the value with the INC or DEC buttons. Select the correct values for your battery pack and then press the Start Enter button and hold for more than 3 seconds This shows the number of cells you set up and that the processor detects. R: shows the number of cells found by the charger and S: is the number of cells selected by you on the previous screen. If both numbers are identical, you can start charging by pressing the Start Enter button again. If not, press the Batt Type Stop button to go back to the previous screen. Then, carefully re-check the number of cells of the battery pack to charge. This screen shows the present situation during the charge process. To stop charging, press the Batt Type Stop key once. Charging a LiPo Battery (With Balancing) This is for balancing the voltages of Lithium Polymer cells within a battery pack for optimum performance and battery life. To do this, the battery pack being charged should have a balance plug to connect to the appropriate socket in the charger. If you don t have a JST XH style connector on your battery, you can use an adapter board. One for Impulse (later plugs), FlightPower and Thunder Power is included together with a connecting lead. The connecting lead uses the 5 cell socket in the charger. Other types of adapter board are available as optional extras. You must also connect the main battery leads to the output sockets (4mm) of the charger for this program. In this mode, the charging process will be different from the ordinary LiPo charging mode. The internal processor of the charger will monitor the voltages of each cell in the battery pack and control the charge current feeding to each cell to equalize the voltages

8 The value on the left side of the second line sets a charge current and the value on the right side of the second line sets the voltage of the battery pack. After setting the current and voltage, press the Start Enter key and hold for more than 3 seconds to start the process.(charge current: a,voltage: 1-5series) This allows you to confirm the settings you selected. The processor detects. R: the number of cells found by the charger and S: the number of cells selected by you at the previous screen. If both numbers are identical, you can start charging by pressing the Start Enter button. If not, press the Start Type Stop button to go back to the previous screen. Carefully re-check the number of cells of the battery pack to charge. This screen shows the current status of the battery pack while it charges. To stop charging, press the Batt type Stop key once. Initial Parameter set up You can monitor the present voltage of an individual cell by pressing DEC or INC button during the charge process. The first line of display shows the voltage of cell no.1, no.2 cell and no.3 cell from the left. And the left of second line shows the charging current, then the voltage of no.4 and no.5 cell. WARNING! When charging LiPo battery in balancing mode. It will damage the charger if you connect your battery with the Cavalier EQ incorrectly. 9 NiMH/NiCd Battery Charging Program Please note that this program is only for NiMH or NiCD batteries associated with R/C model applications. Do not try to charge any other type of battery using this program. This program simply charges the battery using the current you set, the charge current ranges from 0.1A to 5A. Select this charge process by choosing NiMH or NiCD charge from the main menu by pressing the Start/Enter button. The display should look similar to this. If you need to alter the charge current press the Start/Enter button to make it flash, then change the value with DEC or INC buttons. The value will be stored by pressing the Start/Enter button. Once the setting is correct, press and hold the Start/Enter button for 3 seconds to begin the charge process. The display will now show the following. The charger will emit a sound to inform you when the charge process is finished. To finish early, press the Batt type/ Stop button. Pb (Lead-Sulphuric Acid) Battery Charging Program This program is for charging Pb(lead-acid) batteries with a nominal voltage from 2 to 12V. Pb batteries are totally different from NiCd or NiMH batteries. They can only deliver relatively low current compared to their capacity, and similar restrictions definitely apply to charging. The optimal charge current will be 1/10th of the capacity. Pb batteries must not be charged rapidly. Always follow the instructions that are supplied by the manufacturer of the battery. Set up the charge current on the left and the nominal voltage of the battery on the right. The charge current can range from 0.1 to 5.0A and the voltage should match with the battery being charged. Start the charge process by pressing the Start Enter key for more than 3 seconds. The screen displays the state of the charging process. To stop charging, press the Batt type Stop key once. The sound indicates you have ended the process

10 Warning and error messages The Cavalier EQ incorporates various functions for protection and monitoring of the system to verify things are working properly. In the case of an error occurring, the screen will display the cause of the error accompanied by a beeping sound. REVERSED POLARITY - The output is connected to a battery with incorrect polarity. CONNECTION BREAK - This will be displayed in the event that an interruption is detected in the connection between the battery and output or voluntarily disconnection the charge lead during the charging operation or discharge on output. SHOT ERR - There was a short-circuit at the OUTPUT side. In Voltage ERR - The voltage of the input power source has dropped to an unsafe level. VOL SELECT ERR - The voltage of the Lithium battery pack was selected incorrectly. Verify the voltage of battery pack carefully. BREAK DOWN If there happens to be a malfunction of the unit for any reason. BATTERY CHECK LOW VOLTAGE - The processor detects the voltage difference during charging. BATTERY CHECK OVER VOLTAGE - The processor detects the voltage difference during charging BATTERY VOL ERROR - The voltage of one of the cells in the LiPoly battery pack has raised over the limit. Warranty and Service We warrant this product for a period of one year (12 months) from the date of purchase. The guarantee applies only to material or operational defects which are present at the time of purchase or arise as a result of manufacturing fault. During that period, we will repair or replace without service charge any product deemed defective due to those causes. You will be required to present proof of purchase (invoice or receipt). This warranty does not cover any damage due to wear, overloading, incompetent handling or use of incorrect accessories
