1 1. FUTSAL HISTORY. The origin of Futsal (Five-a-Side Soccer) can be traced back to Montevideo, Uruguay, in 1930 when Juan Carlos Ceriani devised a five-a-side version of soccer for youth competition in YMCAs. The game is played on basketball-sized courts, both indoors and out without the use of sidewalls. The term FUTSAL is the international term used for the game. It is derived from the Spanish or Portuguese word for "soccer"-- FUTbol or FUTebol, and the French or Spanish word for "indoor" -- SALon or SALa. The game is frequently referred to as Five-A-Side. Once Ceriani got the ball rolling, Futsal gained rapid popularity throughout South America, particularly in Brazil. The skill developed in this game is visible in the world-famous style the Brazilians display outdoors on the full-sized field. Pele, Zico, Socrates, Bebeto, Roberto Carlos and other Brazilian superstars developed their skill playing Futsal. While Brazil continues to be the Futsal hub of the world, the game is now played, under the auspices of FIFA, all over the world, from Europe to North and Central America and the Caribbean, South America, Africa, and Asia and Oceania. The first international competition took place in 1965, when Paraguay won the first South American Cup. Six more South American Cups were held through 1979, with Brazil winning all of them. Brazil continued its dominance with a victory in the first Pan American Cup in 1980 and won it again the next time it was played in A U.S. team took part in the 1984 cup, but finished out of the running. There are 18 laws in all, ranging in focus from the technical requirements of the ball and pitch through to the exact workings of the accumulated foul rule. FUTSAL RULES a. The pitch Futsal is played on a marked pitch and the ball can not go out of play. The court size should be between meters in large side and between meters in the width side. The court is divided in two sides with a six meters penalty area in each goal line. 1

The ball Is a fundamental factor in making the game and is by virtue of the laws of the game required to be a smaller, heavier and low bounce than eleventh soccer version ball (size 5). c. Head height There are no restrictions (apart form the ceiling of the sports hall!) as to how high the ball can be kicked in Futsal. d. Rotating substitutions Up to 12 players can be used in one match and there is no limit on how long a player must stay on or off the pitch. Players must enter and leave the field of play via the substitution zone that is marked on the pitch in front of the team s benches (5 meters from centre line and 5 meters area) e. Kick-ins In order to restart the game after a ball has gone out of play the ball is kicked back into play from the touchline and from corners. The ball must be placed stationary on the touchline and the feet of the player taking the kicking must not cross the line. 2

The 4 second rule For kick-ins, free kicks, goal clearances and corner kicks the player in possession of the ball has 4 seconds to restart play which the referee will count with their fingers in the air. If play isn t restarted within four seconds an indirect free kick will be awarded to the opposing team. The goalkeeper is not allowed to control the ball for more than 4 seconds in his own half. g. The 5m rule Players are required to keep 5m from the player in possession of the ball on free kicks, corners, goal clearances, kick-ins and penalties. h. Goalkeepers Goalkeepers are allowed to come out of and players are allowed to go into the penalty area. A goal clearance must be thrown out and the goalkeeper cannot touch the ball again until it has crossed into the opponents half or a member of the opponent team has touched the ball. During the match, a goalkeeper can: - Play with hands inside of a penalty area during 4 second. - The goalkeeper is allowed to play all over the pitch, but only for 4 second in his/her midfield. - Goalkeeper have to follow field player rules when he/she is playing outside of the penalty area. - The goalkeeper can throw the ball beyond the halfway line with no further restrictions. - The goalkeeper can achieve goals only with his/her feet. 3

Accumulated fouls Each team will be allowed to give away 5 direct free kicks in each half, then on the sixth foul a direct kick is awarded to the opposing team and the defending team is not allowed to position any players (other than the goal keeper) between the ball and the goal. The kick may be taken from the 10m mark. The kick may be take from the 10m mark or, if the foul was committed closer to the goal than the 10m mark, then the kick may be taken from the position where the foul took place. j. Real time A Futsal match consists of two twenty minute halves that are played real-time which means the clock stops whenever the ball goes out of play. k. Time outs Each team is allowed a one-minute time out in each half lasting 60 seconds. l. Sliding Tackles Sliding tackles are not allowed in Futsal but players ARE allowed to slide on the pitch, for example to stop the ball from going out of play. For a player sliding to be considered an offence, the tackler s opponent must have possession of the ball. Referees will not give a foul for a slide if the opponent does not have possession of the ball. m. Red Cards If a player is sent off then the team to which the player belongs must remain with 4 players until either two minutes have passed, or the opposition have scored a goal. n. Referees In an International Futsal match there are three referees and one timekeeper, here's what they should be responsible for: - First referee: the first referee is responsible for controlling the match and has full authority to enforce the laws of the game. They will keep a record of the match and provide the appropriate authorities with a match report if required and will act as a timekeeper if one is not present. 4

5 - Second referee: the second referee is also permitted to use his whistle to stop the game for any infringement of the laws and will ensure that the substitutions are carried out correctly. - Third referee: the third referee assists the timekeeper and the other referees by recording details of the game on the match report sheet such as times of goals, stoppages and the number of accumulated fouls. The third referee should also try to control the bench area for the two teams, only allowing the coach to stand a give instruction to the players. o. Another rules: - Fouls will be continue with a kick from the place when they was committed. If the foul was committed inside of penalty area, the offensive team continue the game with a free kick from penalty mark. - Accumulated fouls: More than 5 fouls in each 20 minutes will be penalise in a different way. The sixth and consecutive fouls direct free kick. Fouls committed far from than defence 10 meters line, will be kicking from the second penalty mark. Fouls committed between defence penalty area and ten-meter line, the player could select if he/she can kick the ball from de place when de foul was committed or from de second penalty mark. - Each team is allowed a one-minute time-out in each half. During the match a pitch player can: - Kick the ball with all body parts, except with hand, forearms and arms - Fight with his body to maintain ball possession. - Move freely in the court During the match a pitch player can not: - Kicking an opponent or to trip her, or only to try it. - To catch or to hold the opponent with his/her hands/arms - To touch the ball with his/her hands - To block up an opponent player that is going to try play. 3.
