10 What Is Bandwidth? The amount of data that can flow from/to a device Measured in megabits per second (Mbps) or gigabits per second (Gbps) (A gigabit is 1000 megabits) 1-2 Mbps = one compressed DVD-quality video stream 2-4 Mbps = one compressed HD video stream

15 Managing Campus Bandwidth Students are streaming video from the Internet, but you don t control it Philo is under your control Philo uses adaptive bitrate streaming to control the load on the campus network Each channel available at multiple bitrates If the network is busy, Philo automatically switches to a stream at a lower bitrate, reducing network load And you pick the number of streams and bitrates

20 Multiple Streams per Channel Philo s media server provides each channel in multiple stream profiles (formats) Each stream profile specifies: Resolution: 720p (1280x720), 480p (854x480), Bitrate: 2 Mbps, 1 Mbps, 1/2 Mbps, The Philo player picks the appropriate stream for the network load and device 20 The Philo player switches on-the-fly between streams as the network load changes.

Can configure number of streams for each channel Each stream can be configured for: Resolution (e.g., 720p, 480p, 360p) Bitrate (e.g., 2 Mbps, 1 Mbps, 1/2 Mbps) The following defaults work well across many devices:! HD sports, movie channels!! SD news channels high bitrate 720p at 2 Mbps (HD) 480p at 1 Mbps (DVD) low bitrate 480p at 1 Mbps (DVD) 360p at 1/2 Mbps (low-def) Philo works with customers to optimize the number of streams and size and bitrates of those streams.

23 Usage Scenarios For example purposes only Standard Night: Event TV: 10% simultaneous viewers HD: 720p video at 2 Mbps SD: 480p video at 1 Mbps 40% simultaneous viewers HD: 480p video at 1 Mbps SD: 360p video at 1/2 Mbps We have found that for major events (e.g., the Super Bowl) the number of simultaneous streams goes down. It s a social occasion, so viewers watch in groups: more viewers, but fewer simultaneous streams.

28 Advantages and Disadvantages Multicast If there are fewer channels than viewers, can use less bandwidth But: historically not worked well with WiFi But: hard to get working smoothly for large heterogeneous networks. (It s getting better over time, but isn t easy today.) And: you still need unicast for DVR Unicast Flexible, ubiquitous, works with all devices Allows for personalized experience: DVR Individual pause/play Per-viewer/device adaptive bitrate
