However, I can also be reached via cell phone M-F between the hours of 9am-6pm. Text Marketing Management 14th edition, Kotler / Keller ISBN 13: Required Software BBLearn (Blackboard) Microsoft Word. See also the minimum hardware/software requirements on the Spring 2016 Schedule for DCE online classes. Students will be required to use the Blackboard Learn system for Discussion postings, completion of assignments, and to access additional information regarding assignments. This system can be accessed from the following link: Course Description: According to the OCE Linfield College website, BNMK 427 is defined as: Selected topics in marketing using small group discussions. Student participation. Open to juniors and seniors pursuing a major or minor in business. May be repeated with consent of instructor when the marketing topic is essentially different. Prerequisite: credits Extended Course Description: 1 P age

2 Marketing adds value to an organization through its intimate knowledge of the customer which shapes the organization s product line, pricing structure, distribution strategies and promotional campaigns. Managing all aspects in light of an organization s goals and limitations is the role of a Marketing Manager. This class will build on the understanding of marketing concepts gained in BUSN 321 and explore the managerial aspects of marketing. Course Objectives: Students successfully completing BNMK 427 should be able to: 1. An understanding of the role marketing plays in an organization and how to strategically manage marketing aspects to align with corporate goals. 2. Practice in developing strategies designed to maximize marketing performance as measured by company goals and objectives while being subjected to limits placed on the company. 3. Insight into tools available to effectively reach customers and effectively utilize a limited marketing budget. 4. Knowledge of where our current marketing strategies originated and an understanding of the leaders that have shaped this area of study. Note: Specific learning objectives for each chapter will be covered in each week s module on the Blackboard course site. Additionally, instructions that explain the requirements for online discussions, the Marketing Plan project, and other written assignments will be posted each week, or as necessary, on the Blackboard site. Textbook-related assignments: For each assigned chapter, students are required to: 1. Read the chapter and if you have s about concepts or information, please ask your s either online or by . This will facilitate your, and possibly other students, understanding of the material. 2. Take an online quiz, if required below, and send results from the Blackboard to the instructor. (Note: to receive credit for the online quizzes, the results must be received by the instructor by 11:59 p.m. on the due date indicated. Quiz results received after the deadline will be recorded as a 0 in the grading system.) 3. Prepare responses to assigned s. 2 P age

3 Not every chapter requires a Discussion Board posting. However, when these postings are required, online postings need to summarize, explain, tie, or compare/contrast the information. Throughout the week, students must also respond to other students postings on the posting board. (See additional information on Discussion Board postings below.) Academic Honesty I adhere to the college policy on academic honesty, as published in the Linfield College Course Catalog. Cheating and plagiarism will not be tolerated. Any student found to be engaging in either of these activities at any point will receive a failing grade for the assignment and/or the entire course and may be subject to further college sanctions. Remember, too, that in order for references to be done correctly, sources must be referenced in the text of all written assignments (i.e. throughout the Country Notebook, discussion board postings, chapter responses, etc.) using the APA format) and not only on a reference page. Whenever a student is paraphrasing or quoting another source, including the textbook authors, the reference(s) must be cited on that particular page and on the reference page. Please review this website on how to prevent concerns regarding plagiarism: The rule of thumb should be this: If the information would not be generally known by people on the street, it should be referenced. Again, referencing requirements apply to all written work completed, including the discussion postings. Class routine: Online discussions will run from Monday through Saturday. For the original posting, students are encouraged to find at least one peer-reviewed article that is pertinent to the principles or concepts covered in assigned readings, discuss the authors findings in the posting, and provide a critique of the article s content Post a substantive response to at least two students original postings (not just words, such as, I agree., or Good Point. An adequate response must be more than 25 words Must use APA citations for your resources Note: Peer reviewed articles can be found in the online research databases on the Linfield library site. For example: In the Business Source Premier database, you have the option of checking a 5 P age

6 box for full text, where you can read the entire article and not just a summary of the article, and a box for Scholarly (Peer Reviewed) Journals. These articles meet the requirement of a peer-reviewed article. Peer reviewed means that other professionals have reviewed these articles for weaknesses, biases, and errors, so they tend to be of a higher quality than non-peer reviewed articles. Postings must be published as indicated in the Class Routine. Please be proactive in your posts in order to facilitate ample time for dialogue throughout the week with other students regarding the original postings. Postings must be received by 11:59 p.m. on the date they are due to receive credit for that particular assignment. Original postings not posted by the deadline will be recorded as zero in the grading system. Other Requirements: Late Assignments: Assignments are required to be submitted for grading on the date they are due. Late assignments will not be accepted. Assignments are due by 11:59 p.m. on the due date indicated. If you have emergency situations (such as car accident or a death in the family) that prevent you from turning an assignment in on-time, please let me know as soon as possible. I am willing to work with students who have emergency situations regarding due dates, but please do not ask for extensions as a matter of course. Written assignment requirements: All written assignments must be double-spaced and use 12- point type, in Arial or Times Roman font. Make sure that you carefully proofread your completed assignment before submitting it for grading. Points will be deducted for grammar, punctuation, and spelling errors. Turnitin and its GrammarCheck feature will also be used in the grading of specified assignments. Use APA for citing your references. In-text reference citations need to be included in parenthesis unless otherwise indicated. All work referenced should also be included on a reference page. There are many websites that show how to properly use APA referencing. Many students find the following website helpful in providing information on how to use APA appropriately: Assignments should also not have more than one quotation, and that quotation should be a short quotation (fewer than 40 words) cited in APA form. Additionally, Wikipedia should not be relied upon or cited as a source for information. While Wikipedia is a great source for finding initial information and links to references upon which that information is based, students must extend their research to original sources. Grading System/Weighted Grading: Midterm Exam 1: 16% Final Exam 2: 18% 6 P age

7 Homework 18% Discussion Board Participation: 21% Marketing Plan Project 27% Total 100% Grading will be as follows: Percentage Letter Grade A B C D F Below 60 Ø Students will be submitting assignments through the BBLearn system and the Online Learning Center site. Also, the assignments are weighted. Therefore, students will need to set up an Engrade account to see their grades throughout the semester. Instructions on how to set up an Engrade account will be posted on the BB Learn website. Students should periodically review the recorded/graded assignments to ensure all completed submitted assignments have been recorded and to ensure that they have an ongoing awareness of how they are doing in the course. Ø Things I consider when grading written assignments, including those involving the Discussion Board: 90+ Assignment meets all requirements listed below: All the elements of the assignment have been completed as required. The content shows that the writer understands and can explain the relevance of concepts presented in the textbook and other resources. Examples are given to illustrate points raised. The writer can compare and/or contrast information covered in different resources. Grammar and punctuation are correct and the thesis or main points raised have been adequately supported in a logical format. References are adequately and correctly cited. 7 P age

8 80+ All the elements of the assignment have been completed as required (e.g.; all s have been answered) and the writer has correctly cited reference. However, the writer has made a few grammar or punctuation errors, has given an example that does not adequately or correctly support the main theme or major point, or does not include an example, comparison or contrast that clearly demonstrates a comprehensive understanding of the assigned material. 70+ There are missing elements of the assignment or several (more than 3) errors in grammar or punctuation or incorrectly cited a reference and the writer has not adequately supported the assignment with examples or has not been able to contrast or compare concepts or the viewpoints. 60+ The assignment does not cover the required elements, has significant errors (more than 5) in grammar or punctuation, does not include examples to support points made, comparisons or contrasts are either non-existent or lacking in specificity, the topic or theme is unclear and/or the writer s writing is disorganized and does not support the theme or major points in a logical fashion. To summarize, there are at least 5 ways you will be assessed in this course as detailed above. In addition, there are three primary ways you will interact and received feedback: 1) student/curriculum, 2) student/instructor and 3) student/student. In these specific ways, you will also be assessed in the area of in-class participation.
