1 BASIC SCRIPTURE MEMORY COURSE NKJV By Charles Abbott (for imparting Bible principles to help guide young people as they begin to gain freedom) INSTRUCTIONS: 1. VISUALIZE: Draw a picture of the passage being memorized. It can be symbolic if you d like. 2. PERSONALIZE: Compose a prayer to God incorporating yourself into the passage-prayer. To illustrate, here is an example: Let s say Proverbs 1:7 is the subject passage. Prov 1:7 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, But fools despise wisdom and instruction. I might compose the following prayer: Lord, I know the beginning of true knowledge is to reverence and fear displeasing You. Please give me Your wisdom and instruction and help me to receive and keep it. 3. MEMORIZE: Memorize each passage in the topical segment, or unit. This course is designed as if each unit would be memorized over a week. However, it should be learned or engrafted cumulatively. (That is, keep knowing each previously memorized segment as you learn a new one!) It is my prayer that these passages of God s Word will bear much fruit for your entire life, and that this course will be only the beginning of a life of memorizing, meditating on and having God s Word engrafted into you!

2 I. WORD OF GOD Ps 119: How can a young man cleanse his way? By taking heed according to Your word. 10 With my whole heart I have sought You; Oh, let me not wander from Your commandments! 11 Your word I have hidden in my heart, That I might not sin against You! 2 Tim 3: All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work. NKJV Josh 1:8 This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success. NKJV James 1: Therefore lay aside all filthiness and overflow of wickedness, and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls. 22 But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. NKJV II. WALKING IN THE WAY OF GOD S WORD Ps 1 1 Blessed is the man Who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, Nor stands in the path of sinners, Nor sits in the seat of the scornful; 2 But his delight is in the law of the LORD, And in His law he meditates day and night. 3 He shall be like a tree Planted by the rivers of water, That brings forth its fruit in its season, Whose leaf also shall not wither; And whatever he does shall prosper. 4 The ungodly are not so, But are like the chaff which the wind drives away. 5 Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment, Nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous. 6 For the LORD knows the way of the righteous, But the way of the ungodly shall perish. NKJV III. FEAR OF GOD Prov 1:7 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, But fools despise wisdom and instruction. Prov 8:13 The fear of the LORD is to hate evil; Pride and arrogance and the evil way And the perverse mouth I hate. NKJV Prov 19:23 23 The fear of the LORD leads to life, And he who has it will abide in satisfaction; He will not be visited with evil. NKJV Deut 10: "And now, Israel, what does the LORD your God require of you, but to fear the LORD your God, to walk in all His ways and to love Him, to serve the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your 1

3 soul, 13 and to keep the commandments of the LORD and His statutes which I command you today for your good? NKJV IV. PURITY 1 Cor 6: Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, 10 nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God. NKJV 1 Cor 6: Flee sexual immorality. Every sin that a man does is outside the body, but he who commits sexual immorality sins against his own body. 19 Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? 20 For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God's. 1 Cor 10:13 No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it. NKJV V. FRIENDS Ps 26:4-5 I have not sat with idolatrous mortals, Nor will I go in with hypocrites. 5 I have hated the assembly of evildoers, And will not sit with the wicked. Prov 1:10 My son, if sinners entice you, Do not consent. NKJV 2 Cor 6:14 Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers. For what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? And what communion has light with darkness? NKJV 1 Cor 15:33 Do not be deceived: "Evil company corrupts good habits." NKJV VI. SALVATION Rom 3:23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, NKJV Rom 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. NKJV Rom 10: that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. NKJV Rom 10:13 For "whoever calls on the name of the LORD shall be saved." NKJV Rev 3:20 Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me. NKJV 2

OBEDIENCE 1 Sam 12:15 However, if you do not obey the voice of the LORD, but rebel against the commandment of the LORD, then the hand of the LORD will be against you, as it was against your fathers. NKJV Luke 6:46 "But why do you call Me 'Lord, Lord,' and do not do the things which I say? John 14:23 Jesus answered and said to him, "If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our home with him. NKJV Eph 5:6 Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience. NKJV 1 John 2:3-4 3 Now by this we know that we know Him, if we keep His commandments. 4 He who says, "I know Him," and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. VIII. HOLINESS 1 Thess 4:7 For God did not call us to uncleanness, but in holiness. NKJV Heb 12:14 Pursue peace with all people, and holiness, without which no one will see the Lord: NKJV 1 Peter 1: but as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, 16 because it is written, "Be holy, for I am holy." NKJV IX. GLORIFY AND LIVE FOR GOD, NOT WORLD OR SELF 1 Cor 10:31 Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God. 1 John 2: Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world--the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life--is not of the Father but is of the world. 17 And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever. X. YOU REAP WHAT YOU SOW Gal 6: Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap. 8 For he who sows to his flesh will of the flesh reap corruption, but he who sows to the Spirit will of the Spirit reap everlasting life. 9 And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart. 10 Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all, especially to those who are of the household of faith. 5 XI. DIRECTION Prov 3:5-6 5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; 6 In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths. Isa 30:21 Your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, "This is the way, walk in it," Whenever you turn to the right hand Or whenever you turn to the left. Ps 119:105 Your word is a lamp to my feet And a light to my path. James 1:5-8 5 If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him. 6 But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind. 7 For let not that man suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; 8 he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways. XII. PEACE / CONFIDENCE IN GOD Phil 4:6-7 6 Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; 7 and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. 1 Peter 5:7 casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you. 1 John 5: Now this is the confidence that we have in Him, that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. 15 And if we know that He hears us, whatever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we have asked of Him. XIII. PROVIDENCE (LOOK IT UP IN THE DICTIONARY!) Rom 8:28 And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose. NKJV Rom 8: For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, 39 nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. 6 XIV. WALK IN HUMILITY James 4:10 Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up. NKJV 1 Peter 5:5 Likewise you younger people, submit yourselves to your elders. Yes, all of you be submissive to one another, and be clothed with humility, for "God resists the proud, But gives grace to the humble." NKJV Prov 16:18 Pride goes before destruction, And a haughty spirit before a fall. NKJV XV. SEEK GOD Ps 27:8 When You said, "Seek My face," My heart said to You, "Your face, LORD, I will seek." Ps 34:10 The young lions lack and suffer hunger; But those who seek the LORD shall not lack any good thing. NKJV Ps 37:4 Delight yourself also in the LORD, And He shall give you the desires of your heart.nkjv 1 Chron 16: Glory in His holy name; Let the hearts of those rejoice who seek the LORD! 11 Seek the LORD and His strength; Seek His face evermore! NKJV Deut 4:29 But from there you will seek the LORD your God, and you will find Him if you seek Him with all your heart and with all your soul. NKJV John 6:35 And Jesus said to them, "I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst. XVI. GOLDEN RULE / LOVE Matt 7:12 Therefore, whatever you want men to do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets. 1 John 2: He who says he is in the light, and hates his brother, is in darkness until now. 10 He who loves his brother abides in the light, and there is no cause for stumbling in him. NKJV Matt 5: "You have heard that it was said, 'You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.' 44 But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you, 45 that you may be sons of your Father in heaven; for He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust.
