Free Money based on NEED

Next to College List-Building and Essays & Applications Support, helping families UNDERSTAND AND MANAGE THEIR EFC is THE single-most important element in our College Planning biz, providing the biggest financial impact for them.

EFC IS: Expected Family Contribution The computation by which colleges & the gov t assess a student s legitimate FINANCIAL NEED Inherently CONFUSING (misleading?) by its very name
EFC is NOT a GUARANTEE of what a family will pay for college... even though the name implies otherwise

Need-based Financial Aid is based on a simple formula: The Needs-Analysis Formula COA (Cost of Attendance) - EFC (Expected Family Contribution) Financial Need
Average 4-Yr Public College: ~$21K CSU System (23 schools) $20K - $26K UC System (9 schools) $29K - $37K Private Schools $32K - $63K Highly-Selective Privates $57K - $68K
Need-based Financial Aid is based on a simple formula: The Needs-Analysis Formula COA (Cost of Attendance) $60K - EFC (Expected Family Contribution) $25K Financial Need $35K
Need-based Financial Aid is based on a simple formula: The Needs-Analysis Formula COA (Cost of Attendance) $25K - EFC (Expected Family Contribution) $70K Financial Need $0
First of all, there are two completely DIFFERENT types of financial aid Need-based aid Merit-based aid Many parents erroneously think of financial aid as being limited to free money...
... There are actually 3 types of need- based aid Grants ( FREE money... also known as Gift Aid ) You DON T pay it back! Work-Study (a job... they work for it) Typically $1K to $3K Loans (pay it back... with interest)
Are they EVER! at least, according to the colleges & gov t. They ve successfully convinced us that borrowing money for college is necessary and IS financial aid
When should YOU learn your Expected Family Contribution? BEFORE any Financial Aid Apps are submitted (which could be as early as Nov 1, 2015!)... and ideally BEFORE the College List BEGINS!
When should YOU learn your Expected Family Contribution? In short... for parents with sophomores NOW!
EFC Calculator (FREE)
THE sole purpose of a Financial Aid Form is: To CALCULATE Your EFC
Understanding Financial Aid Forms (and if YOU LL need to do them)
2 Main Types of Financial Aid Forms: FAFSA CSS PROFILE
Free Application for Federal Student Aid
Gov t form, Federal Dept of Ed (ED) Based on your EFC, you may qualify for: Federal Aid State Aid Private College Aid ED provides the SAME EFC to all of the colleges to which your student has applied... and to you as well
Like the FAFSA, it s sole purpose is to calculate YOUR EFC Administered/controlled by the College Board This Financial Aid form is used by only ~ 250 colleges, most all of them being private Required to qualify for any Institutional Grants from these colleges
The Ivies (HYP) MIT, Georgetown, Duke, Vanderbilt Boston College, NYU, Holy Cross Univ of Michigan, UNC-Chapel Hill, UVA
Cal Tech Claremont Colleges (Claremont McKenna, Harvey Mudd, Pomona, Pitzer, Scripps) Occidental Santa Clara Stanford USC

Even if your income is well beyond $100K, you may qualify for $10K-$30K of FREE money, maybe more... FROM the right colleges!
If Your EFC < $25K-ish... then your child can likely attend any number of PRIVATE colleges for LESS money out-of-pocket than many PUBLICS.

If you know for CERTAIN that your EFC is higher than the cost of ALL of your child s colleges under consideration... Then you don t need to complete Financial Aid Forms Unless you want federal loans (student Stafford/parent PLUS), in which case you must file the FAFSA. If you re NOT certain then FILE

Understanding WHO Gets University Scholarships
HALF of all the FREE money is in Scholarships (aka, Merit-based Financial Aid) Can be based on any number of parameters Academics, Athletics, Artistic, Drama, Music Offered to entice students to a given college MUCH more prevalent at private colleges
In general... the TOP 25% of the applicant pool receives the lion s share of Scholarships directly from the colleges. A student could be a Valedictorian and be in the TOP 25% at one college and the LOWER 25% at another

There s a LOT of Merit Scholarships available, primarily from the PRIVATE colleges Sadly, many families MISS OUT entirely on this type of free money, because they apply to the wrong schools Beware of BNP (Brand-Name Paralysis)!
FROM (High School) College Amount of Award Capo Valley U Michigan $ (80000/4 yrs) Capo Valley Chapman $ (80000/4 yrs) Capo Valley LMU $ (104000/4 yrs) OCSA Chapman $ (80000/4 yrs) Edison USD $ (112000/4 yrs) Dana Hills USD $ (88000/4 yrs) Dana Hills Chapman $ (100000/4 yrs) Marlborough Tulane $20000 (80000/4 yrs) Newport Harbor Pepperdine $38000 (152000/4 yrs) Santa Margarita Wash U St Louis $32000 (128000/4 yrs) Tesoro Baylor $36000 (144000/4 yrs)
Understanding the Importance of Constructing A Realistic College List
Constructing a REALISTIC College List is THE single-most important task and challenge for families in planning properly for their children s college!
So what do I mean by Realistic? Excellent-FIT (Academic/Social/Spiritual/Political/etc.) Doesn t put at risk mom and dad s retirement Doesn t burden your child with student loans
You can do EVERYthing correctly up to this point... yet still BLOW IT!
High achieving student, low-need Did EVERYthing she was told to accomplish Got admitted into her dream school (Stanford) A couple days after the admission notification came the financial aid award Nothing but loans... what happened?
The student was NO-Need, VERY High-Merit Stanford has a no-academic-scholarship-moneyfor-anyone policy The Financial Aid Award consisted of (predictably) nothing but Student and Parent Loans.
If you can t comfortably write the check for the sticker price then you MUST: Understand your NEED and/or MERIT eligibility Understand the Financial Aid Policies of ALL your child s colleges under consideration Then and ONLY then... build your child s College List accordingly, taking into account your ability to pay
If you have a high achiever AND are counting on scholarships, don t make the common mistake that every college offers scholarships. The more selective a college, the less likely that significant Scholarship money will be offered. Ironically, the highest achievers tend to apply ONLY to the (very few) colleges that offer NO merit-based scholarships.
Barely 1/3 of students are graduating in 4 years About half the students have not graduated after 6 years. Nearly 1/3 of freshmen don t return to the same campus as a sophomore 1/2 of students are graduating from a different college than the one they entered as a freshmen
Granted... the lengthy graduation time is partially due to the difficulty in getting classes in the public colleges, but...
The 2 Biggest Factors: Financial Pressure Not understanding Financial Aid policies and true (out-of-pocket) costs of college Poor Fit (picking the wrong colleges) Academic disqualification Cultural/Social/Political
The AVERAGE amount students are borrowing for UNDER-grad degrees: $32K
